Eighteen years ago, my husband unwittingly bought me a TWH, without my knowing it. The horse was so good-natured, but was a pacer, and did nothing else. Does this mean the horse was untrained? He tripped over his own feet (we had the farrier out to chisel his hooves several times) and fell heavily with me up! I could have been seriously injured. We sold him, my heart broke. He'd be 30 now. Do they live this long? Should I assume he's no longer living & not look for him?
It's good to see a horse walk this pretty without the whites of its eyes gleaming in pain. That is one absolute gorgeous horse and you can simply tell how relaxed and happy he is. Good work to all involved. This is the definition of a TN walking horse (not some overly high stepping wacked out look). Great video.
I've only ridden one TW horse in my life.. it wa the best riding experience i've ever had. I've never experienced such comfort! I borrowed the horse from a friend to participate in a natural horsemanship riding clinic. Not to mention- the horses overall temperment was incredibly- that horse did everything! i'd love to own one some day!
are you doing all the training yourself? some one has put a lot of patience and love into him to see him so calm loading and such. I do not know much about gaited horses but I do know a gentle well loved horse when i see one. he was so calm I would say you could trust a young child on him with no worries
my horse wont do that! shes 5 yrs old n a TN walker Everytime I try to fast walk canter trot or run she bucks ... anyone have any ideas? on what to do? she trys kicking you if you lean against her without a saddle . thx! :D
@Heartland4ver Yes they can canter and gallop and jump like other horses. they don't usually trot so they are usually unable to compete in traditional drassage classes, however the twhbea has a drassage test available at versatility shows where the trot is replaced by the running walk. As for saddles, it depends on how you are riding. I ride in an all purpose english seat, some ride western, in show, most are rode in a saddleseat, but a special saddle is not needed for casual riding.
This horse is beautiful and I love the natural gait. I also wish I would have seen this horse before it sold. And Albicat13 you are very rude. This man shows talent in his riding and you probably don't even know a thing about riding. Yet all you can do is make rude comments to someone you don't even know.
very nice walker very smooth gait check out my video type in road runners riding club its gonna be the first video up there we got some real flashy/smooth gaited walkers
Born. You can train other breeds to walk that way, but it comes completely natural to Tennessee Walking Horses. I'd say it's a good idea to learn to ride on a quarter horse, just so you get the movement down, but the Tennessee Walker is such a sweetie.
I own a quarter horse and a tennessee walker. I have been riding for 18 years. I just never knew if they were born to gait. My guy is either lay or not born to gait because I can't seem to get a nice smooth gait out of him.
The only reason the horse moved when he got on was that the horse wasn't standing square--no big deal, although it's better if your horse is square when mounting. He certainly doesn't need "a bigger horse"--this one could handle someone much heavier than that guy. I weigh 110 lbs and have ridden ponies that were only like 10 hh with no problems (ONLY because we didn't want to immediately put a small child on these ponies that hadn't been ridden in over 6 months--I didn't ride them for long!).
Beautiful Horse! I also own A TWH he is amazing I love him to bits! His name is Another Dead Ringer anyways beautiful horse and im glad she went to a good home!
that so kool he found a family.....do you have any tips for me...becuz my mom manages at a hotel and one of the employes knows im a horse lover and is going to probably sell him to me...so do you have any tips that would help me once i get him?
Yes. Just check out our website. You can follow the link in the video description. We have a black gelding on the site. I am also working on the video for a very nice palomino that we will have for sale soon so check back often.

Even though this horse is sold, it'd be nice if you left the video up so people can see what a correct running walk looks like.

Now that is funny--it would never have occurred to me to ride on it backwards! But I want to try that on my TW sometime.

Do they jump or do dressage?
BEAUTIFUL horse!!!
I love the way they carry themselves.
Its like AHH IM THE KING OF THE HORSES!!! lol
Also do they canter, gallop, abd jump like other breeds. If they do would you mind putting up a video?
Do they have to have different saddles to the normal type?
Thanks for you help and for reading!
