Use right click with a stack of blocks to place 1 block into the crafting table instead of splitting stacks it is much faster also use shift click to take stacks from the crafting table to your inventory it also works on chests.
I know you asked not to be told what you where doing wrong but they just frustrated me.
@cyberdurand Also I only ever grow the birch trees because I've found they never grow taller than the your maximum reach while standing on the base block of wood.

@xabaras It's called GLC. Have a Google for it. recordmydesktop doesn't do OpenGL well, AFAICT. You might need to compile GLC though.

When you are cutting a tree down don't cut the first block till the end. That way you have something to stand on for those slightly higher blocks ;)
