And along the same lines, if you should teach an animal to be tolerant of babies, you should teach a baby (if they're going to be around them) how to play nicely with them.

If the cat turned on the baby it would be so quick that no-one could prevent it really injuring the baby. No matter how good-natured, patient and affectionate the cat is, there could come a time when it has just had enough and the only way to let the baby know is by biting and scratching. This isn't something I would risk with any child or grandchild of mine as I have had cats all my adult life and I know how they behave. Apart from which, animals are not children's playthings.
