That is a very difficult cover to do. I played in a band where we covered Subdivisions and luckily we had a drummer that had the chops to play the drum part nearly flawlessly.
Al you are awesome.....I'ma life long Rush fan and drummer and I've seen many Rush covers on here, but you are astonishing, that was simply incredible :-)
This does not look like a "fun" song to play: it looks like a lot of work to me. Everyone knows Rush are world class musicians especially Neil Peart who is the best percussionist on the planet.
There used to be a vid on youtube of Neil playing this song taken from the same camera angle. I loved watching it, but for some reason it was taken down. My best compliment to you is that I might have been fooled had you been wearing one of those wierd beanie caps that Neil wears..Nailed it, dude!
Actually that is a single stroke roll. All the different tabs that I used to learn this song have it written as single strokes as well. But if it sounds good and you think I cheated it then hey I did my job.... LOL
Im sorry broski but you CHEATED IT. Good cover but you cheated the singles in the beginning at 0:59 those are definitely single stroked but other than that Excellent!
Would you mind telling me what type and size china cymbal you're using here? It sounds great. I'm so OCD when it comes to finding cymbals I like, but China's are, by far... the hardest. I like them quick, not too trashy and fairly bright. I like yours. Details would be greatly appreciated. Great job man! One of my favorite Rush songs.
@manofgod30 Uhh Neil ALWAYS makes mistakes. He has never once stated he doesn't, and has said on many interviews, during behind the scenes and back stage, that he RARELY every thinks that a show is perfect. Actually the only time I have ever heard him say that a show was as best as it could be was the R30 Tour in Rio. Hes very critical on his drumming, and has stated that Tom Sawyer is love hate. He loves it when he nails it perfectly, but hates it because it rarely happens. Thats just one song.
You did one damn fine ending there. Wish I had more of my 'full' songs on Youtube... Kinda wish I had ANY of my songs on Youtube. :p I need videos for them.

definetely the best drum cover yet GREAT JOB! i like how you held off the tempo slighty as neil does at the end when using the china, most drummers speed up too fast. you nailed it, nice tone on the drums, great mix.
Mr. Slark, you are a force to be contended with. I hope you are sharing your gift with a band. Maybe a Rush tribute band or something much more original and personal.

Very nice! Excellent work on the ride/china/snare part near the end. That part is a major bitch to do perfectly (and Neil brought it back with a major vengeance at the end of Counterparts' 'The Speed of Love' with tom hits... UGH!!) and by watching your foot, you pretty much nailed it. Great song, and great playing!

@AlSlark In defense of atguitar1990, he never said that he could play them.
It doesn't take a Peart equivalent to know when a fill sounds forced as compared to the original recording. He's only stating an observation. Perhaps you wouldn't have noticed it yourself.
@AlSlark Don't listen to this atguitar1990 guy. It was freakin' awesome. Been listening to Rush before atguitar1990 was born (I'm assuming he's about 20) and believe me, it sounded awesome.
@AlSlark Perfect, don't listen to this idiot. Been listening to Rush since before 1990 was born (assuming his alias is his age) and believe me, it was awesome.
@AlSlark@AlSlark Perfect, don't listen to this idiot. Been listening to Rush since before 1990 was born (assuming his alias is his age) and believe me, it was awesome.
@atguitar1990 Wow. I love to read comments from cocksuckers such as yourself. Your name has the word "GUITAR" in it. Not "DRUMS". You guys act as if you could do better. I don't see any videos containing your material in them nor would I even bother watching them. "A little forced" you say? If I shoved your guitar (do you even own a guitar?) up your ass, then you would know what forced was! Unless you're a drum teacher or instructor, you'd better shut the fuck up! FAGGOT!!!
@atguitar1990 Actually most of the fills were rushed, but a very good cover nonetheless. I'm not sure why so many drummers these days like to take their pinky fingers off the sick but it annoys me. Good job anyways AlSlark and keep it up.
There a number of very good Neil Peart covers here on YouTube but your cover of Subdivisions has to be one of the very best. Excellent work - I have listened to this track hundreds of times and I could not pick up one mistake in your drumming.
@mikecohn4000 if you look a little closer you'll see my other bass drum, I have 2 x24 " bass drums. can't play Rush without double bass! wouldn't sound right.
That is a very difficult cover to do. I played in a band where we covered Subdivisions and luckily we had a drummer that had the chops to play the drum part nearly flawlessly.

Great video Al! Don't listen to these idiots "critiquing" every little thing...Awesome vid!

Also, fills around 3:03 are also a little forced.

@atguitar1990 Like you actually know what your talking?
I'd like to see you come close.

Your shift from 7/8 to 4/4 in the intro is a little shaky, doesn't feel right. Good cover however.

There a number of very good Neil Peart covers here on YouTube but your cover of Subdivisions has to be one of the very best. Excellent work - I have listened to this track hundreds of times and I could not pick up one mistake in your drumming.

@volleyballjerry Better check out Martin Periard. Al's good but in several spots he's a tenth second off, especially at the beginning of the song.
