i found this video on accident just looking for some good organ rock music... i'm still picking pieces of my brain up off the floor after my head exploded from the awesomeness
Thanks for posting this most excellent compilation! I loved it, of course! Man, that sweet Hammond & Leslie! I don't know of any other instrument which, with one chord held, sings with so many changing and evolving harmonics. I could hold and F#m forever just to hear the different overtones singing their strange lullaby. A magical instrument for sure. Thanks again, Sycsa, for reminding everyone what amazing music sounds like.
@neopythagorean Your enthusiasm is infectious. I assume you are a player. I am looking for an Organ player for an Electric Blues,Jazz and "a little bit of" Rock band in The Southern California area. I could use anybody's help who is an enthusiastic fan of organ.
@bobyoung53 The title says "The greatest gammond organ solos". Then why include something that is quite simple (for players) and a lot of other people could play. Please take time to read my reply, you didnt do that last time.
@EspJulio he played a continental and g101 combo organ, not a hammond. Although he did play b3 on LA woman, the changeling and Wild Child. Though he didn't play any solos on them
some great selections ..but hey, emerson and lord were'nt the only rock organ players ,,wakeman .rudess ,,tony banks. billy preston ,mathew vincent,,even the organ solo from the Stranglers version of "walk on by" was pretty good.
You forgot one of the best of all time, at least that I have heard: the solo in "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf! By far one of the best ever, that I know of! :)
where is Mike Ratledge of Soft Machine? keyboardist from one of the most important bands on the rise of the progressive line, and also play in Tubular Bells of Mike Oldfield. Apparently you are forgetting the prog rock'father is psychedelic rock, why so many of John Lord and so few of Keith Emerson?
but well... your list is not so bad after all, because you didn't put even one of Wakeman, that proves you have a wider brain! good good
thanks and.. pleaseeeeee listen Soft Machine "Third" album
Yeah sure thing, nice footage, what about Barbara Dennerlein??And then Rick van der Linden (Eksception) these two should have a spot as well as the Apocolypse off of Foxtrot, for sure!!!
Paul from The Blood Orange Project here... just posted a video response, using an A-100 with the Leslie for Deep Purple Hush in the second half, enjoy!
@BloodOrange65 Oh, but why didn't you play the whole solo on the real thing? That's an insult. Anyway, you guys are cool, I hope you'll do it again the right way and share that version as well. :)
@BloodOrange65 I'm not a purist, but I dislike plastic sounding instruments. What's the point of sharing a solo between a Hammond organ and a bad sounding keyboard that tries to sound like a Hammond? If you share a solo, do it with a piano, a Moog, a Rhodes/Wurlitzer or something that makes it interesting, adds depth to it and, lastly, doesn't sound like ****. A cover can be done in so many different ways, but if you decide to remain faithful to the original version, do it right.
@BloodOrange65 I don't quite understand why you take this so personal, you posted a video on my page so I expressed my opinion about it, end of story. I didn't mean to offend you, but if you can't cope with criticism, why share your music in the first place. As to why you confuse personal opinion with manners or why you feel the need to throw around petty-minded insults, I have no idea, but please refrain from sending over any more of your friends to do the same, MrTripDawg was enough. Goodbye.
@Sycsa Actually i'm tripdawg, it's another account. Was signed into the wrong one. Sorry for letting my emotions run away, you schooled me proper. Not everyone has access to Rhodes, Wurlies, Farfisas, Continentals and Moogs. Sorry the Roland RD-700 doesn't meet your exacting standards, it's what we have to use. Since this is a working band with a show and not a solo act featuring the heavenly Hammond, other performers must be taken into account when performing. Peace.
Thanx so bloody much for putting these solos together. Amazing! I'm learning (self-taught) how to play this timeless instrument & this footage is very inspirational. Thanx.
@MrTheKommunityfk Thank you too, I'm really happy that you found a source of inspiration in these fabulous Hammond players. Make sure to upload some of your playing later on!
Thanks for posting these great old organ classics. BTW, the sheet music for Booker T.'s original organ part for "Green Onions" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription of the main riff.
underestimated musical instrument. source of great musical achivements. from jimmy smith to deep purple, and so many others , but ive gotto keep the list short.
Very, very well done,Sycsa!I`m glad that so many people appreciate these solos on the most beautiful instrument of the world...of course,Jon Lord is still the best ,and I can see you share my opinion:)
I just love this instrument! I've been playing it for 15 years, if anyone wants to see my new uploaded video, highway star made in japan organ solo cover :) Peace and Rock to all!!
Wow...I forgot how kool this stuff is....when did rock bands do away with the hammond? Kids today should have their korean fenders confiscated, and forced to learn the hammond for 3 yearws at least
Amazing collection of solos of course mr Lord is the tops imho no offense to the jazz folks and I love Jazz especially mr Jimmy Smith and mr Monanco but the hammond really shines on rock n roll and Mr lord taught us the hammond is a beast through a regular amp he invented that.
Thanks so much for putting this together. Today's music needs more soul and more Hammond would be a good start! Born to Move by CCR gets me every time, i never seem to see this song referenced anywhere in Organ Pr0n, definitely worth a look if you haven't heard it!
RE: Paul Shaffer -- -Agreed. It's not that he doesn't know music, It's not that he is a Canadian, It's not that he is bald-----it's just when he raises his fist and yells..YEAH it somehow just doesn't fit. Here, or anywhere. 'nuff said
@Pianolisticer he did an interview when he explained doing the deep purple concerto with malcom arnold and double tracking piano and organ with whitesnake that was interesting
Too much Jon Lord. If you ever saw Deep Purple live in the 60's or early 70's the ham drowned out everything but the vocals. Very heavy on the accelerator. And no Billy Preston? I'll give you a point for getting Jimmy Smith in though. (And I realize you can't squeeze em all in there).
@Luke77313 I had C3 with the infamous Leslie, and sure do miss that wonderful sonical piece of wonderful furnature.. Sadly, I sold them both for $1.4k last year. I needed the room in the house, and I wasn't playing any more. :(
I don't play keys nearly as well as ANY of these guys featured here but I'd almost give up a 'nad to have a B- or C-3... a REAL one with tonewheels...and a Leslie speaker.
Ahhhh .... classic rock pianists and keyboard players. Amazing ... every bit as important as the greatest lead guitarists back in those days, and just as awe-inspiring. Today's bands can't touch bands from the 1960s and 1970s!
Rod Argent is such an amazing keyboardist! There was a time in rock music when keyboards and piano were as prominent as guitar, but no one plays keyboards nowadays? Billy Powell of Lynyrd Skynyrd ... such talented and beautiful piano player. He was one of the few rock pianists of today but sadly, he died in 2009.
Keyboardists like Jon Lord, Ray Manzarek, Rod Argent, Rick Wright, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, and Tom Scholz are why the Classic Rock Era lives on today. That was REAL music!
Nice compilation Sycsa. Thanks. I saw Emerson, Lord, Jimmy Smith and Wakeman at least once each. (love the live Booker T).
My personal fave, for anyone interested is Jimmy Smith's "Walk on the Wild Side", but always listen to the original Oliver Nelson arrangement that sets up the Hammond solo so wonderfully.
The perfect Hammond video.

Ahhhh .... classic rock pianists and keyboard players. Amazing ... every bit as important as the greatest lead guitarists back in those days, and just as awe-inspiring.
