Huh?? You don't know much about the History of Sunni wa Jammaia and Shia. Shiaism started after they rejected Abu Bakr (as) for being the first caliph as they wished for it to be Ali, Shias believe in a bloodline which is totally Haram. The British were living in small huts and just learning how to build boats let alone run any empire...

Authentic Sunni traditions state that Muhammed said "Ali and his Shi'ahs will be the successful ones on the day of judgement, with smiling faces". So, the Shi'ahs were around a long time before the 'Sunnis' ever came into existence.
