Ewan McGregor had the same problem on his GS1200 in long way round, just take out the plugs and crank it over a few times, the rest will just evaporate :)
Sven, one of the few people in the world with the equipment to find a sat nav submerged in water and mud, out on a trail, in the pitch black darkness of the night.
Good man for going back and rescuing the satnav, the offroad gods will look kindly apon you. (Well, except for the broken leg thing, so I suppose the off road gods had it in for you for past deeds at one point B-).)
I had my 225TX (Serow?) out last weekend in the snow.
Getting a bit stir crazy her eon this side of the pond, I'm ready to ride....
Then pull the plug and drain the combustion-chamber good (up side down).
If your not TOO far from your car.... then have one of your buddies go back and get some oil, for an oil change, coz the water would have also entered throught the crankcase and head breather hoses.
Of course this procedure isnt as important if the bike was drowned in relatively clean water i.e. a nice river crossing.
What dirt bike is it you ride? From the colour I'm guessing a KTM? Like a KTM 625 SMC or the 650 version? I've been thinking about a dirtbike for a bit of greenlaning and a better, tougher mode of transport so I don't have to ruin my sports bike and I've been looking at the KTM's at the moment.
Hehe, i've been thinking of doing that myself, Suzuki DRZ400 myself, but i'm just gonna finish off my Pilot Sports, and whack some Roadsmarts on it. Sven's got a KTM 450EXC, Dan(Danmoto73)'s got one too.
You've got night vision goggles?! Could you make a video on them? Where you got them, how much they were, the others on offer. I really want to get some, in fact me and my mates were saying we should all get a pair and go night time paintballing, how intense would that be, in like a pitch black forrest or somthing. And as if the sat nav still worked! Another great vid :-)
The effort was well worth it, to get your friend's response! Garmin should pay you for the field test! Btw. I have seen the stars with night vision out on the sea, and it is breattaking.
Brilliant mate. You're the sort of friend that there should be more of.
My nephew drowned his bike once but didn't know to undo the plug. After almost flattening the battery trying to start it, it cost him several hundred dollars in repairs!
I know what you mean about the stars at night. It's amazing what you can see at night when you're eyes don't get all messed up by the light pollution so prevalent at night these days.
That is nothing short of amazing ... finding that little thing in the dark, and lying at the bottom of a mud puddle to boot! Kinda like a Special Ops mission. Well done. Hope your friend is suitably impressed!
You could probably sell that footage to Garmin for use in an advert. :)
I would've felt like crap myself to be honest, least it's ok now and you even made it up to him by getting soaked in the dark and getting back his satnav :D

Also, are those public roads or something?

dont ever hit the start button after drowning your bike.... u can do serious damage to the internals.
marek0086 2 years ago
What would you have him do? Never start the bike again? Push it the 40 miles home?
svengalie 2 years ago
First drain the carb fuel-bowl.
Then pull the plug and drain the combustion-chamber good (up side down).
If your not TOO far from your car.... then have one of your buddies go back and get some oil, for an oil change, coz the water would have also entered throught the crankcase and head breather hoses.
Of course this procedure isnt as important if the bike was drowned in relatively clean water i.e. a nice river crossing.
marek0086 2 years ago
If we did this everytime the bike goes over in a puddle we'd never ride.
(Latest video there's two further drops, this doesn't include the millions i don't upload)
Great in principle, in the real world however not practicle.
svengalie 2 years ago
not every time it goes over.... just any time the motor gets flooded (hydraulic lock).
I dont understand the fun in going through big muddy puddles and wrecking your bike.
marek0086 2 years ago
How would you establish it's hydrolocked or not without trying to start it.
I thoroughly enjoy river crossings and the like.
There's no way around them, it's either through them or don't ride.
svengalie 2 years ago
I said, dont hit the (electric) START BUTTON.
First try turning the motor over slowely with the KICK starter.
marek0086 2 years ago
@svengalie where did you get the night vision googles sven??

I love the off road videos, there's guaranteed someone falling off... usually you!
I was tempted to buy CCM 230e to have a go but hardly any B.O.A.Ts in Dorset, so are all the tracks BOATs near you?
Apparently you get nicked very quickly round here if off roading in the wrong area.
