If they can't work to supplement their income and their men can't work because if you have a husband or boyfriend living in the home, he can't have a job either. With rent being somewhere between 500-2500 a month and the average mortgage is at 250,000 on a single family, how do you expect people to afford a decent home and life? Statistics don't mean anything unless we actually look into what happened to these people who were on welfare prior to, during and after the welfare reform act.
We have to take into account:
a) whether or not these people are more financially and socially better off.
b) whether or not it was due to welfare reform or it was because of other factors such as the economic boom of the 90's or both.
It doesn't matter whether more people are on or off welfare, I don't how O'Liely makes the connection that children being out of poverty is because of welfare reform alone, anyone care to explain? Again the same applies for black children and female headed families. And what does AA children being born out of wedlock have to do with this?
This is not to say I think this is a good thing. My ex girlfriend is black and I happen to cae very much for black folks. What we need is to get struggling people away from the inner cities where there are already too many people begging on the street, and give them jobs and possibly apartments to rent. Tell you what, I'd rather have mom stay home for $4.00 an hour and take care of her kids _instead_ of sticking them in some daycare where they get indoctrinated. I've always thought that if your on welfare and are having children you can't afford or you don't like paying taxes to pay for them you could always make the children work. If you can't pay for your kids make them pay for themselves. Pretty neat idea, hey?

Well some of those 4 or 5 kids could go out to work and support themselves and myself. There are still some parts of the world where children are expected to work to support their families. People in the "rich"world did it once, maybe we should go back to that.

I agree ... and I was raised a democrat. It's one of those things, though, where I worked a shitty $7 an hour job and saw parents let their kids run wildly throughout the store drinking pepsi outta a bottle, wearing nothing but diapers ... and I seriously wanted to go up to them and ask them for the child support they owe me for when the kids are in jail later. All races seem to have problems going to Planned Parenthood to get birth control, the morning after pill, or some free condoms. WTF

There are also people with jobs who don't work. Instead they spend all day in the bathroom or store room sleeping off their drinking binge of sweating out their drug binge, listening to their IPODs or watching TV on the cell phones. Believe me, I have seen it. Stop people on welfare expecting the government to help them? They'll just get jobs and expect others to earn their wages.

@superstarYK Here is the problem with welfare in general. Welfare prevents you from working and the only way you can get welfare is to have children. So what do poor people do? If they can't work to supplement their income and their men can't work because if you have a husband or boyfriend living in the home, he can't have a job either. Welfare to work is shameful because it does not address this problem. If you are going to reform welfare then do it right.

@superstarYK Here is the problem with that logic. You can't get rid of welfare on the basis that all people cannot work because you do not have an adequate living wage. With rent being somewhere between 500-2500 a month and the average mortgage is at 250,000 on a single family, how do you expect people to afford a decent home and life? These are the problems no one is willing to address.

he said his figures came from the US Census Bureau. i looked on another website and it said between 1980-1984 the out of wedlock birthrate for african americans between the ages of 15 and 44 is 81.7%

Statistics don't mean anything unless we actually look into what happened to these people who were on welfare prior to, during and after the welfare reform act.
We have to take into account:
a) whether or not these people are more financially and socially better off.
b) whether or not it was due to welfare reform or it was because of other factors such as the economic boom of the 90's or both.

This is not to say I think this is a good thing. My ex girlfriend is black and I happen to cae very much for black folks. I really wish everyone, no matter what color skin, would reach out to this community and help them in any way they can. It's atrocious what drugs, disease, and crime have done to them.

What I believe "affirmative action" should mean is, instead of handouts and quotas, we should treat those different than us (sex, color, religion) in a positive manner, even more so than we do normally. Just being nicer to people and not blaming an entire race if you meet a few that turn out to be azz-holes. I have met good and bad people of all kinds.

I believe in reaching out. What we need is to get struggling people away from the inner cities where there are already too many people begging on the street, and give them jobs and possibly apartments to rent. Not by welfare/gov't handouts, but through private charitable organizations (so no one gets robbed to pay for all this).

Just a bit of info: the welfare reform OReilly talks about here, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act, has been decried by an overwhelming majority of sociologists who study welfare institutions on a local, state and policy level. Just check the books on this one-sociology journals, journals on welfare and social work, whatever. The reason why there are less people "on the rolls" is that they have been kicked off by bureaucratic sanctions.
