@amjustalovemachine the dogs represent the 26 dogs 1 guy had killed to prevent the enemy from spotting their unit. they came back to haunt him in his sleep
According to Robert Fisk in his book "The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East", pp.484,488–489, Israeli defence minister at that time Ariel Sharon and Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan met with the Lebanese Phalangist militia units, inviting them to enter the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and telling them the PLO fighters were responsible for the assassination of their leader Bashir Gemayel. This is the core information that was neglected/distorted in this movie.
You need to watch this film in a good quality resolution with a large screen. Usually it doesn't matter but with this film I would recommend it. It is richly animated, mesmerizing.
Man, this is so haunting. I love how this film isn't really for war or against war, it doesn't really serve a political purpose. It simply tells the stories of people who saw the violence and hate of war and are haunted by it. It's about a man "waltzing" with his memories.
Recently bought this film...holy shit. A trippy film about an important story about a very troubled part of the world. Very disturbing tale that makes the whole conflict much more complex...if that's at all possible. More Americans need to see this film to understand some of the underlying animosities...great film.
@SABRENOSE i totally agree, but my sodding sister refuses to watch anything unless she can understand it without reading it, so i guess as a result shes gonna have to put up with this low res verson.
Our professor showed this to me and my film class, and after the film was done; everyone didn't say a word for a minute or so. Everyone was speechless.
It is truly a strong and beautiful film that shows the true nature of war...
I liked the film but I didn't like how all the former Israeli soldiers basically placed all the blame for the massacre on the Phallange, basically taking away any responsibility on behalf of israel or their own actions. It must be nice to wash your hands clean of the guilt genocide like that (of course these are the same who will never let anyone forget about the Holocaust)
@hitmanhart670 I think the movie says exactly the opposite. the massage is that Israel knew and allowed it to happen which is not much better than doing the killings yourself. that is why he is haunted, thats the whole point.
@sharonstonts Not criticizing the film or the filmaker Mr. Folman, just didn't like how the guys interviewed immediately shifted the blame without acknowledging israel's role in what happened
@sharonstonts actually, its not even about what happened, its a personal psychological trauma being portrayed on the stage of what was the labanon war. The movie is only going into as much detail as necessary about the conflict to let the viewer know "where" and "when". what do you think?
heiminator-I only partly agree. yes it is portraying a personal trauma but he also criitisizes the israeli heads of government and army. this is something you can do only when you look back 30 years
It's a real strange thing. This film shows many beautiful pictures of the war. However it is to be said that just because of its aesthetical depictions of a violent conflict it reveals war's true nature of ugliness.
Thanks for this, but I have to say, there is a lot more emotion in the regular version that isn't dubbed. Dubbing movies takes away a lot, and although this isn't like some old Bruce Lee movie, the characters still don't seem the same, and some of the greatest parts are when the main character is quietly talking to one of his friends rather than narrating.
The quality of this isn't all that great...I strongly recommend that if you're watching this here and are interested in fully enjoying such a great film, you go and buy/rent it. Its completely worth it, I promise.
It's interesting to watch this and than hear accounts from a lebanese perspective of this war as my best friend is Lebanese. I should show him this film.
@axe11154 Nope...him. And he's even gay too so it's an interesting friendship. I'm dating his sis yet they dislike me cause I'm besties with him and not because I'm a non-Lebanese. Seems gayness is a hated topic in the Lebanese culture more than a white bf.
that's one of the greatest movies. and the animations are not poor or bad. if you look closer you can see how realistic some drawings where (do you see on first sight if the helicopter is real or animated? or the trees and the winter landscape?). For me it's a brilliant movie about a really interesting topic.
Having not seen the entire series of posts, I am pleasantly surprised to see the "Akira" like opening scene. If the story teller has taken their narrative sensibility from such material, this may truly be an awesome piece.
I'm really annoyed with the home video version of The Super Scene. When I went to see it in the cinema it was REALLY LOUD and all the more "epic", as the kids call it these days. I felt like crying and I could tell the rest of the audience was pretty taken aback by it too.
Maybe it was just the way it was presented at the place I went to see it (which was fucking spectacular - the video, the audio ...)
the animation is pure shit when you compare it to other animations e.g. code geass (like it :D), music isn't that spectacular at all, but thats just my personal opinion, story is truly something that wasn't made in that style yet, but im 16 and got to see it in the german lesson in austria and i don't like it, i thinks its crappy the graphics are shit and the story is only something for older guys, cause what is so great about it for an 16 year old boy, nothing at all...
You're right, that's your opinion. But it's obvious you know little of the Lebanon-Israel conflict and it's deeply-rooted history. And as a 20 year old woman who went to see it with her 40-something aunt and 20-something cousin, I don't think it's "only something for older guys".
@Deadhappens true to that, maybe you should try seeing it again when you get a better education (i don't say this to offend, just honesty) This is... different... some anime can be really deep too but this is about a real story which makes it special, you'll like this when you get older and appreciate the real world abit more :) for now though I would of found it boring at 16 too :D
I completely disagree with your comment. I thought that the animation allowed him to perfectly capture the terrible scenes of war. I never knew much about the Israeli-Lebanese conflict and this movie taught me so much about it. The music was fantastic and went with the scenes perfectly. So for a 15 year old boy, there was much to enjoy in this movie.
@GanjaClaus I took this movie out from the public library almost 2 years ago. It's on DVD and you can also watch it in Hebrew language soundtrack with English subtitles if you want.
This translation sucks. The Hebrew version is much better.

Hollandia777 1 year ago
Thank you! However, according to me a pity the original spoken language is taken out. I would have liked English subtitles. In
my experience, it makes it crucially less real when the original
language is not heard, even when this language is not understood
(therefore then English subtitling). :-) So.... for me
this is not the version I am looking for as I cannot
experience the 'reality' of it, so I hope to
find a Hebrew spoken version with, I hope, English subtitles.
But thanks for upload.
