But it is just as important today than at the time it came out . Even though it was written for a Korean War veteran , there could have been no better time to release the song . A lot of our soldiers were coming back paralysed from injuries during the Vietnam War , just as today when many are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan .

@ultrakool I agree...but the winter shadow on the wall, which is the sign to him that she's about to leave for strange men, is symbolic to him of his situation. i would think watching that shadow and knowing what it would bring would be a very low and lonely feeling. that's all i meant by it.

I love Kenny. Did you know that this song is based on a true story? Kenny Rogers almost married a Vegas prosititute that he met in Memphis. They were engaged for a while, but she couldn't leave her life of prostitution and eventualy did take her love to town. Poor Kenny.

It's a good song as it demonstrates that love today is shallow. No loyalty, just the love of thy self.
Ruby is symbolic of this country's high divorce rate, where people no longer take for better or worse seriously. Today we love only ourselves and that is why this country is in failure.

@PaharCuPai The war referred to is the Korean war and not the Vietnam War. The lyrics seek the empathy of the listeners about a man paralysed from the waist down and 'Ruby' was seeking the affections of other men.
You are certainly correct with the latter parts of your inference. The reference of the lyrics to 'Crazy Asian War'. He does indeed love Ruby however it is made for the listener to infer what he would put in the ground. His rifle or his woman although it is assumed it is Ruby.

But it is just as important today than at the time it came out . Even though it was written for a Korean War veteran , there could have been no better time to release the song . A lot of our soldiers were coming back paralysed from injuries during the Vietnam War , just as today when many are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan .

There's a big difference fromt he war in vietnam and the one in iraq. The people in vietnam were drafted, they had no choice. In iraq they're going of their own free will, so if they get their legs blown off they have only themselves to blame.

At the time it came out in 1970 , the U.S. was involved in the Vietnam War . Soldiers back then related to this song as thousands of them were coming back with physical and emotional scars , even with their legs "bent and paralysed" . These men came back alienated from a public that denounced the war . The same is true for those who served in Iraq .
