  • Oh man, this is so adorable.

  • This is probably an ancient video to comment on, but thanks for showing us how the teaching is done. I like learning about Japanese culture from a "western" perspective.

  • @EruIluvatar no worries - I still see and read every comment on all my videos. So thanks for the comment. :)

  • Aww... I want to go teach English so badly. :(

  • omg :O, she's not been to england, buuttt shee HAS been to finland. ahahah (;

  • "Which is larger China or America?" "America" ><

  • a hecky na did u guys see that mask she was holding

  • This was interesting. It looks like you put her under pressure as well. How cruel, hahha.

  • my mom is moving there in the summer to fujieda any advice

  • @Titan232065 some of the basics I go over in my "Becoming an ALT" playlist would probably be helpful

  • I am learning japanese right now but i REALLY would like to go to japan and teach english when i graduate :)

  • i like your way of teaching ..looks like you enjoy teaching with cute students..

i also want to be a teacher like you !!

    nice !!!!!

  • Great video! It makes me miss my classes at Tamagawa University... hey, I just noticed my own little teaching in Japan video popped up in the related videos, woot! Hope to be working for JET next year. Wish me luck!

  • that's awesome

  • I love this video

  • According to Wikipedia, China is only smaller than America if you exclude areas of dispute between China and India. I'd have given her a C, but then again, my students hate me. ;-)

  • haha - well, every now and then my kids would give a very wrong answer, but if they said it in proper English it was still fine, since I am testing their ability to use English, not their knowledge of geography. :)

  • Using Wikepedia is very unprofessional.

  • Professionalism is not exactly expected on YouTube comments.

  • No, but it is expected in the classroom

  • haha thats awesome cute japanese students

  • I love english with the japanese accent. I got a kick out of all the school kids that speak english with me when I was in japan. I think it a shame american schools dont have more alternative language classes.

  • Hey Jason,

I was curious about this test. Is this a test you made for the students, or is this a standardized test made by the other English teacher or the school?

  • Well - there aren't any standardized tests I know of that test a student's ability to SPEAK English. There is an interview component to the STEP test tho that is somewhat similar.

This test was made by me, based on the study questions made by my school's JTE (Japanese teacher of English). Pretty standard questions culled from the 3 textbooks they've studied during their 3 years in Jr High.

  • She did a good job! Really good on pronunciation.

  • Too cute!

    Looks like alot of fun ^^;

    xd

  • She did an excellent job so tell her congratulations from us all in the U.S. I would love to learn Japanese instead of written which is the way I see most test.

  • I wish my English teachers were like you. Your student are lucky to have such a supporting sensei =D

  • She's been to Finland? Wow. Exotic country, although I live "next door" in US terms of distance.

  • And how much is this "next door" distance to us?

  • Haha, according to my American culture studies classes, "next door" is about one day of travel by car. But it's a little farther actually... about 1000 miles (1600+ km) from my town to Helsinki.

Finnish is a cool language, but after reading some class exercises for beginners I felt I should rather stick to easier Japanese. :-)

  • I can understand 300 to 600 miles, but 1000? That's bit too much to understand as "next door". Anyhow, if you know how to speak japanese, than it's easy to learn finnish, 'cause they work (almost) the same way grammatically and when pronounced, but you must've already known this

  • Japanese and Finnish being grammatically similarly? First time I hear this. Feel free to PM me on this topic, I think this is the wrong place to drag this out.

  • yes - she and 7 other students of mine went to Finland last summer for 10 days on a home stay program - they all enjoyed it very much.

  • awsome. feel free to come back again! =)

    Hugs from Finland ^^

  • Thanks Jason and Yui! (You should tell Yui she's famous now!) ^_^

  • aww she is addoriable!! I hope my host sister is like her! :DD

  • Wow, thanks Jason. I am getting so excited. I hope I am chosen to be a JET!!! Four more weeks of waiting! Thank you again for another awesome video.

  • Gosh, it must be nerve-wracking for the students to prepare for such types of tests, because they must anticipate hundreds of possible questions. It's great that you are so nice and relaxed with the students, to help ease the pressure.

  • She did pretty good. You've got some good students Jason. That's a pretty interesting way of testing, it beats a written test by far, more fun than a written test in a quiet classroom where you hear nothing but pen strokes.

  • Canada is bigger in Landspace then Canada, but Japan has more people. Anyways awesome video, it's nice to see some of your students helping out making the videos =D

  • Jason this was a very feel good video, as it really reinforces the level of dedication you have for your students. It really does seem that you go above and beyond the average JET. Yui herself did great, very impressive. It must be very rewarding to see your students progress from when you first began teaching them.

  • very interesting vid! you have some cool students...any hoodlums?

  • That was awesome, thanks.

  • It is a pen, I heard that's like the first sentence Japanese students learn in English haha

  • This is so cool! God I hope I got the job!!! :)

  • Hmm, I remember always being taught that Russia is the largest nation, Canada is second, and China is third. Now that I look it up on wikipedia, China and the United States are close enough in size that depending on what you actually measure, either can be considered larger.

While we are comparing land mass, I once mentioned that Alberta (the province in Canada in which I live) has more land than the entirety of Japan. My Japanese friend bet me a beer I was wrong, but turns out I was right.

  • Including Alaska and Hawaii, the US is slightly larger than China.

  • Yea i thought China was thrid largest aswell.

Alberta is huge and it's only the 6th largest province!! I just reacherched it if you like take the area of all the countries in the world , the "average" country is just a little bigger than Alberta.

  • The surface area of Canada that is open water ( lakes) is larger than the surface area of Japan. I get a kick out of that.

  • Shes good.

  • Great! More lesson plans!!

  • Love this video... really interesting.. your students are very bright...

  • What a rockin' teacher you are!

    Big thanks to the students!

  • cool. interesting vid

  • Ah, very cool. It would be nice to see more videos like this to show examples of how it can be done.

    Thank you!

  • wow very good she is

  • Finland FTW

  • Very cool, nice interview.

  • I really enjoy these vidoes especially when you have students in them and i don't mind that i don't see them

  • you are very professional! that's why your students are good ;D

  • Haha you look like you have a lot of fun with your students Jason! God I hope I am accepted....

  • good job! I can't wait until I am done with college, I want to teach there also. My mom taught English there for a three years, hopefully I can do as well as you two are doing. Take it easy! またね~

  • She seems to have a pretty good understanding of the English language. Looks like you did a great job teaching them!

  • I love your video and its my goal to become a ALT after college.

Thank you very much for all videos you post, I'm sure it will help me a lot! XD

  • thanks for showing us how you teach you students, Jason.

This is a creepy angle to film the interview though. I find myself waiting for the girl to turn her head and scream into the camera. Maybe I've been watching too much Japanese horror films lately...

  • just maybe...lol

  • China is bigger than America.

    China: 9,640,821 km2

    USA: 9,629,091 km2

  • haha - it's damn close tho, huh. :) It was important if they got it right, but knew what I was asking and answered appropriately.

  • Cool I just did a hundred last week myself... as a total noobe by seeing you I feel like I am on the right track. Encouraging and cool video... how is the school about shooting video of the kids did you have to get permission???

  • the basic rule now is no faces. So I have a few ESL vids up here, but I only show the back of their heads.

But you may want to ask before you post anything just to be sure.

  • Yea, perverts are bad news.

There was a JET that had a life blog basically, not really anything about JET exactly, but just the funny stuff that goes on, and he had alooot of pictures of his students (with him of course) on it.

I was always against such things, its very dangerous to those kids.

  • So is it a JET rule? Your school's rule? or your own rule to protect minors?

  • first to comment, awesome video Jason
