Hmm this makes me think that the old Nextel walkie-talkie feature may make a return, for any phones with this technology that are within range of each other.
its not quite traditional adhoc as we know it...this is much more sophisticated. If you look at the internals of this spec...it is derived from the infrastructure mode which quite full fledged for a spec when compared to an adhoc spec...which is not quite a complete spec... and is not that popular ... because of its primitiveness
Myth 1. Bluetooth = 10 m. Truth: Class 1 Bluetooth = 100 m
Myth 2 Bluetooth = 800 kbps. Bluetooth 3.0 + HS = 24 Mbps

This is just a marketing attempt by WiFi to leverage their ubiquity on devices for internet connectivity to usurp BT. Device manufacturers will think. Well, I already have a WiFi radio. If it can do what BT can, then why have BT?
@reibroker Bluetooth is so lousy because antenna is not included in bluetooth routers. If you add an antenna to a bluetooth dongle, you can expect 100m which is normal, since bluetooth uses the same frequency as wifi. Speed wise is a software limitation.
This has got to be the STUPIDEST animation meant to Talk Down to the average consumer ever!! This "WiFi Alliance" must think we are all too stupid to understand even the most basic wireless connectivity concepts.
If you did just a tiny bit of research, you would understand that many consumers today are not very tech-savvy. Do you honestly think this video is aimed at people like you, who understand bluetooth as well as other methods of wirelessly connecting devices? If you understood it by just reading about it, you probably wouldn't need any help from this video. And to the people who are saying this is "just like bluetooth" or things along those lines, you are wrong. Read reibrokers post
Didn't the NDS do this a long time ago?

Iphone 5 will have Wifi Direct has suggest the new features that enables you to unlock, update and transfer file via Wifi in iOS 5.
IT'S ABOUT TIME.
I've been wondering years, why the fuck I couldn't use wifi to simply connect devices without internet or anything.
The only drawback is still the high power consumption

@Augurae I bet it'll be locked down to iTunes only transfer though!

@davechrz Gotcha..... from this video it seemed to be used in a 1-1 manner in all examples.
goldchain34 1 year ago
@goldchain34 ad-hoc is 1-1, wifi direct allows multiple devices to join a network without an access point

Isn't this called "Ad-Hoc" WiFi!?!?!?
goldchain34 1 year ago
@goldchain34 that's exactly what I thought. I think it's just rebranded Adhoc WiFi

Agreed the video is "cute" but not really exciting. This is:
Bluetooth 10 meters - WiFi 100 meters
Bluetooth 800Kbps - WiFi 11Mbps
