  • you could have had a draw with B3, couldn't you ?

  • fair enough

  • Umm I think blockading the pawn from going even further would of been best, because in your position you can't play offense against offense. I have to say that you are a great commentatir and chess player.

  • I probably would have played the same move and gone for active play rather than 'passive defense', but sometimes passive defense is the best option you have i guess.

Really good video, you are one of the best chess commentators on YT. I really hope you do more videos in future, and more regularly because you are a pretty good player and commentator.

  • Once again, very nice presentation!

    Incidentally, Black does not have to go passive after 1. Ne3 Nd4 2. Ra1 Rd6 3. Kf1. For example, 3...Rb6 is good: e.g. (the following is Rybka-assisted) 4. Ra5 b3 5. cxb3 Rxb3 6. Kf2 Rb2+ 7. Kf1 Nb3 8. Ra6 Nd2+ 9. Ke1 Nf3+ 10. Kf1 Rd2 with moral victory for Black (but still a draw)

  • Without a move or time-in-video reference no one knows what you're talking about. If you're referring to the pawn on b3, then you are wrong. Read the comments below you.

(Or, actually examine the position more than 1 ply deep before making a comment like this, that would be best)

  • e2, Kxe2, Nd4+ wins for black.

  • his rook dies because of E2+, KxE2 (forced, otherwise the pawn will promote and the loss will be even quicker), Nd4+ forking king and rook.

  • These videos are superb mate,

  • Good lesson, thanks.

  • Why couldn't you play Rd3 instead of Rb6?

  • After ..b2 my Rook has to go to d1 or b3 to stop the queen.

    Any time the R is on b3 it's a loss: Rd3 b2 Rb3 e2+ Kxe2 Nd4+.

    But Rd3 b2 Rd1 loses to the simple Na3.

  • when I first look at a past pawn I think, "oh, I'll be able to stop it before it queens" but two moves later I start to freak out.

  • tried that a couple of times in my own games.

  • Ew. That knight was just what he needed.

Thanks for the video. Good to see you posting again!

  • great vid GCB... congratz on only 1 loss

  • unfortunately, no wins

  • =[ that sucks... but an interesting endgame...

  • Good one! Endgames can go from kind of even looking to lost so quickly.

  • My Rybka 3 actually recommends Ne3 in 3-6 seconds for the "first" move, maintaining equality.

  • So does mine but it changes its mind after a while

  • At 8:37 why not just take the pawn?

  • There is a reason. Forgot to mention that during the video. Obviously I saw it during the game. Can you find it yourself? It's quite forcing.

  • yes i can see it. after you take pawn on B3, he moves pawn to E2 check, you have to eat that pawn or he will queen it, and then he moves knight to D4 and attacks your king and rook.

  • Because:

    Rxb3...E2+

King must take the pawn or else ...E1 promotes so...

    Kxe2...Nb4+ wins the rook

  • ...e2+

  • Very instructive; thanks!

  • Wow, Smarty is a clever player. Too bad there's not some obvious play on his name to describe his chess abilities!

  • Wouldn't it be awesome if there was
