  • Chevy Chase is really desperate for work.

  • @0neofthem

I always do when when I turn, not when I stop to be honest, and not if no one is around. But I always signal and look back at then driver so the know what I'm doing.

  • i just got hit by a car today on my way home from work lawl!

  • C+, not enough full-face motorcycle helmets. Don't you want to protect against serious diffuse axonal injuries incurred at 12mph?

  • I ordered a full face dual sport motorcycle helmet so my entire face and head stays intact. It also will keep bugs and dirt out of my face.

  • thanks for the tips in the video helpful to me

  • i hate the NHTSA, they wont allow an r34 in america cuz of their faggy saftey standards, grow a pair you pussies!

  • bike riders are arragant fags and deserve to be run over

  • @cover1919 right because we are the ones reducing polution, the drive time to work, and getting exercise. while motorists are increasing polution, drive time to work, and getting no exercise. so tell me how bike riders are arragant. if anything you are sir.

  • @xerxesnoscope360 you have answerd your owen question in your reply to me, you allready think your above anyone who drives a car because your saving the planet, secondly why is it that bike riders seem to think that road rules dont apply to them, this is why they get run over

  • @cover1919 troll some more

  • @cover1919 No car drivers are fat morons who cant get off the sofa.

  • i very like this video, i hope that will help a lot of people

    dublinbikedotnet

  • Whats the song!!!

  • car drivers suck ...cunts

  • 5:49 sorry but this is a really bad example of being predictable. The guy is going to make a left hand turn but yet he stays all the way to the right of the turn lane and the truck behind is like WTF?

  • @totoroben It's safer than getting cut off by the turning truck, and it keeps you in the legal bicycle traffic position after the turn.

  • @wcclark I would have centered myself in the turn lane to clarify my intention to turn left and have the driver see me (both have to stop anyways). Why a cyclist would be at the right hand side of a Lt turn lane is beyond me, but to each their own. I cannot see how centering yourself in a turn lane would cause you to get cut off.

  • @totoroben I don't see what he's done incorrectly there - as it makes sense for him to turn like that. He's in the turn lane, indicates, then will end up to the right as he straightens up - which leaves room for the vehicle to pass him then. The alternative would be for him to be in the middle or left of the turn lane and hinder the vehicle's route.

  • 4:20 dog is professional mechanic.

  • Last year I crashed on my road bike at 30mph I broke a rib but helmet protected my head. My Giro Atmos helmet had cracked but I was fine. I was convinced after that I would never ride without a helmet.

  • I bought all this safety stuff for my bike and my family still won't let me ride at night. Well, I hope I get hit by a car and I die. Screw them, I wish a car would hit me.

  • @mcgregwood7 QQ some more please? Night riding is not that great anyways. Can't see much beyond where your headlight is going and at least where I live tons of bugs. So I spend the time staring at the same small field of vision and hearing bugs splat all over me. On the good side it will teach you to cycle with your mouth closed very quickly.

  • get a fixie ppl! ud be able to go at speeds much faster then motorists on main roads then they can. and zoom past them so they u dont have to say that fucking shitty ass exuse they didnt see me. good people are so dumb.

  • Please watch:

THE WORLD'S SIMPLEST TRANSMISSION for BICYCLE

  • @TABAGfrancis a fixie is single speed. the first bike made. how simple can u get with one speed? ur such and idiot if u think a bike like that is simpler then a bike thomas edison had, rode, and tricked on.

  • this is all just common sense people stop wasting time with this vid

  • @supernimh Some people don't have the same common sense as others, and it's never a waste of time to learn.

  • Nice. :)

  • @jdfox1 yeh nice :) i feel waaaaay vbetter now - I think people who have it tough recognise this stuff and pepole who are spoilt and havent suffered are callous and arrogant

  • Please wear a helmet!

  • i have never ever seen anybody use hand signals

  • i want ahelmet not a stupid hat, what if i fall on my jaw? i hate those hats that wont protect u

  • I have a MTB and I'm afraid to ride on the road because i'm too slow :(

  • @cedricalien The best way to get quicker is to get miles in your legs. Just be aware of your surrounding when cycling and try to cycle without weaving and STAY OUT OF DRAINS. You should be fine following these rules regardless of your speed or experience.

  • @babbage517 thanks.

  • at 6.10 probably not the best idea to pass people in a turn..

  • I've just started cycling to places instead of using public transport in London, England. I feel much better for it, but I still feel terrified that I'll crash or fall off...does this ever go away?!?!?! LOL.

  • 3:41 Brakes?? i dont have brakes :/

  • great vid. very informative

  • don't forget "bicycle requires bright color clothing"

  • I dont a liscense and i am 21 now, I don't need a car because cycling is wonderful, plain and simple, I am fit enough to get around where i need to go, I get this undescirbable feeling when I am on the road its like magic

  • @CanadianMonarchist1 -I'm so with u on that one!

  • my max speed with a bicycle was 56 Km/H :D

  • mine was 71,2 km/h :D

  • @wounds100 mine was 68kph. on flat roads solo -47 kph

  • Please see the World's Simplest Transmission for Bicycle....

Watch: UNIQUE BIKE CRANK ( 2- SPEED)

  • Good idea is to wear very bright clothing so motorists can easily see you!! Like bright orange or safety yellow or neon lime green!!!

  • Good video! Thanks.

But helmets are not so popular i think...

    Regards, kule

  • if peeple dont wanna were a helmet then vey shud geta taxi cos it safer n faster

  • Eugh at helmets... I'd rather take the extremely low risk of head injury over wearing a useless UK helmet and carrying it around with me. At least the Dutch know how to have fun cycling.

  • Only the cheap helmets look bad.

  • what if you are riding and infront of you there is a school bus stopped, do you wait for it to move or you keep going by moving to the side

  • For many jurisdictions (US), you may pass a school bus much the same way as driving a motor vehicle unless if there's only a single lane: Just pass on the left when its clear, but slowly, and keep an eye for any students/pedestrians crossing from the front of the bus.

Don't forget to follow the stop signs on the bus (if there's one).

  • @w3lc0metomyl1fe

    thank you.

  • lol livestrong bracelet on the left hand :)

  • I'm from the UK and I have to use an American bike safety video! Saying that it was pretty helpful.

  • Amazing video! Thank you =D

  • why am i watching this? i should be studying for a final lol

  • lmao

  • people with your attitude need to turn in your driver's license and get off the road. they call it a license because driving a motor vehicle is a privilege and not a right. if you are going to advocate running people over or threaten to do so, then your place is in a jail cell where sociopaths like you belong.

  • I would tell you about "getting out of the way" and why that sort of attitude is idiotic, but what few brain cells you have left would not be able to comprehend it. If you think road rage is acceptable, and all things you have said indicate that you think it is, then you belong on the bus and not in a car. Seriously, get your ass off the road, loser.

  • Sell your car and take the bus, bozo, before you wind up in jail.

  • Yes moron... no cyclists own cars, none of them. Are you really that bloody stupid? I own two cars and drive hundreds of miles a week, and I ride bicycles, so don't give me this "I pay taxes" crap because most cyclists own quite a few vehicles, many own businesses that pay way more in road tax than you do.

  • yea. you are right you got me you win.

  • @dentar99 i dunno about america, but in the UK roads are paid for by general tax that everyone pays, so even if you never use a road you've paid for it, so no car driver can ever say you don't have a right to do this or that ect. ot you should be in the cycle lane or whatever. car drivers seem to think they own the road or have more right than you do, they can suck a dick lol

  • Really, cyclist don't pay taxes??? That's funny because last time I looked at my paycheck there were a lot of taxes taken out, and seeing how tax dollars pay for infrastructure I think we have the same rights as you and your gas guzzling automobile. Fail dude, EPIC FAIL.

  • Why would anyone with any sense question the absolute necessity of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle?

  • Somewhat sensible Video, but why the Helmet propaganda?

  • Great stuff. Check out mountain bike instructional videos, by the pros at the Bikeskills Channel on YouTube

  • helpful

  • ummm.. she's hot... i love bicycle babes.

  • many motorists do not have the common courtesy for todays bicyclists. I commonly have to fight against traffic in areas where there are no paved roads or no access to a path.

  • Hey. It really has little to do with bicycles. Take it from me: I love driving my car AND riding my bicycle. Some drivers are just AH's, that's all; they have no consideration of their fellow rode users, regardless of the vehicle they are using.

  • I have had several bicycle accidents over the years and they were invariably caused by motorists just not looking out for cyclists. Thankfully in my area there has been an awareness campaign for motorists since. The last time I was in an accident, I decided to play dead for a few minutes on the guy's bonnet just to make sure he'd never forget to look out for cyclists.

  • @hartleymartin Isnt it a bid "Evil" to pretend you were dead? I was the one that was so unlucky to hit someone on a bike, i would get a much bigger shock if the person i hit pretends his dead. I mean, people can make mistakes.

  • @Etimoz "evil"? hahaha no

  • @TokyoGeisha21

    What then?

  • @Etimoz What then? Um, not evil. That person should have watched where they were going, and with the person pretending that they were dead will teach the guy to pay attention to the road, then he won't have that problem again. Because the next time, the next person might actually be dead.

  • @TokyoGeisha21

Everyone can make mistakes, even the most experienced driver could be so unlucky to hit someone. And, not to forget, the one on the cycle maybe also did something wrong, like not looking out for cars. I would think that most people arent trying to drive someone down, and if they then should happen to do that,i think the shock itself, from hitting someone, would be enough to make them look an extra time, making the fake death unnecessary.

  • @Etimoz Hmmm...actually yes you would be right. The shock of hitting someone would probably enough to teach the driver to drive more carefully. But still in that sense, what the bike rider did may have been wrong, but I don't think it was evil. What is "evil" by the way?

  • @TokyoGeisha21

I merely used "evil" because i could not think of a better word to describe it.That's why i also used ".

  • A video on what car drivers should do to respect cyclist is of more value in my opinion. Cyclists are more willing to share the road than motorists.

  • Yeah, its a psychological thing. To some people out there, the fact that you're on a bicycle gives them the right to try to kill you. I'm a road biker and I've got some stories that would blow your mind. I'm absolutely convinced that there are some outright stone cold killers out there just waiting for a murder they can get a away with.

  • i know what you mean,

and of course if the driver of a car makes a mistake its instantly your fault.

and most of the car drivers yell at me and say its illegal to ride on the road.

  • Its so true i got ran off the road by a motorist for no apparant reason, i was hard to the side of the road that there was no space and they kept moving.

But i agree i share the road i dont own it.

  • kick their car!

  • hey allot of the footage was taken at hains point in DC. If you saw how everyone rides there you wouldn't think it was such a good place to shoot a safety video. Stop sign there means look but keep going.

  • Heres a tip, Don't ride your bike without a seat, or while your drinking gin.or eating steak.

  • or all of them at once :s

  • I have a trek 7.3 fx and a gary fisher kaitai

  • wats the song?

  • cool

  • very usefull for cycle man

  • Oh! Oh, on 1:20 I just KNOW i've seen that tower somewhere, i just can't remember what it was. I've totally been there though, theres a really cool crib around there, all big and white where this old guy with big ears lives

  • Could we have a copy for our educational propaganda?

  • Thanks for the Video! It will be of great use in my daily commutes! Peace

  • As we all know, the evils of groupthink and the common, uncritical mind, are responsible for the greatest tragedies in human history... including the Great Leap Forward, Fascism, and bicycle helmets. It is like Atlas Shrugged come to life. Helmets be damned, so that America, and Freedom, might live.

  • This video makes me want to go riding on my bike!

  • What if you get doored? It's probably the most common accident and they don't even mention it. Make sure you get the driver's name and license plate number if you get in an accident!

  • Hi.

Great Bike Safety video. This is Teddy, May 2008 is Bike Month here in San Luis Obispo,CA. Your video is a perfect fit to show during our celebration. Thank you very much.

    Cheers& Livestrong

  • Shrink it and pink it

  • 06:03 - With all of that debris in the right lane of that road I might very well elect to ride in the left lane, and I'm fully permitted to do so according to the California Vehicle Code.

Also, I wasn't aware of any legal "requirement" that I wear bright colored clothing while riding: 06:26

  • At 06:03 - "Stay to the right and pass on the left"...Where I'm from in California, I --only-- have to "stay to the right" where practicable. I'm allowed to "claim the full lane" when it's too narrow to ride alongside a car, as is the case on the streets of many California cities. The lanes are 8.5 to 9 feet wide on some streets, the lane in the movie here makes it look really easy to ride alongside a car. In reality it is not always so "practicable"

  • I ride without helmet it's just for keep my hair-style however i know the risk but actually i use a mirror attached on my lenses that's a great support.

  • Great video except that the helmet message is quite misguided. The evidence from coutries that have forced bikers to wear helmets is 1) bikers numbers reduced 2) the relative frequency of bad head injuries did not decrease. See the article Bicycle helmets at en-dot-wikipedia-dot-org + cyclehelmets dot org. Search the web for "Three lessons for a better cycling future" and "cycling and children and young people"

  • i agree. i dont have brakes on my bike either, some arrticle on wikipedia showed me this study of countries that force you to have brakes.... it made no difference in safety, and people stopped riding as much.

  • phecora: You are trying to paint opinions that you do not agree with as ridiculous. Not very compliant with the method of reasoning and study to find out about things. I did not say the specific Wikipedia article provides proof. It provides pointers to scientific literature and reasoning. A good starting point. Besides I gave other pointers as well. Can you or anyone else point to better overviews of the arguments and the science ?

  • i do not know to what you refer, sir. i am merely pointing out that the same control freak, nanny state social thrust that is responsible for the bicycle helmet fad is also responsible for the brake fad. Men got along fine for decades without the modern braking systems, and all their complicated skullduggery, marketing hype, and government propaganda.

  • Oops sorry, phdecora. But I must say your statements sound both unusual, and not very well founded. Could you try and find the Wikipedia article you referred to ? Other sources ? The Wikipedia article Fixed-gear_bicycle has a section on (missing)brakes that lacks the arguments you put forward, although the debate on brakeless "fixies" is coverred. . Instead referenced arguments are put forward vaguely to the opposite effect.

  • The article on the bicycle brake conspiracy has been removed by the wikipedia administrators, who are part of the conspiracy. The other sources toil away in obscurity, hounded by agents of an overweilding federal government, doomed to live a life of repression and dissent... only in their hearts and secret underground meetings knowing the righteousness of their cause.

  • OMG! Selene Yeager! Fit Chick from Bicycling Magazine!

  • The only reason you would ride a bicycle without a helmet is if you have nothing up there to protect. If you have $50 dollars worth of a brain then go buy a helmet and wear it when you ride.

  • Cranro: yeah, maybe you're a lot safer from accidents when you ride according to the rules of the road but if you have an accident you'll be a lot more likely to be screwed without a helmet

  • My friend Joe had a collision with another bicyclists he was transported to a hospital out cold he had no health insurance. Joe now rides with a helmet he was in high school at the time working at a chicken shack and couldn't afford the $800 ambulance bill it was that cheap back in the mid 80's and who knew what the hospital bill was. I learned from Joe I ride with a helmet, reflectors, blinkies, headlamp,on me and the bike, you name I try to be seen. All LED lights they last longer.

  • I never ride without helmet!

  • muhauahaha i never wear a helmet

  • Been riding for over 20 years, raced for 8, and split 3 helmets. Hope you have your own insurance because as a tax payer I don't want to pay for your long term care. On the other hand you may just die, saving us the money... You are an idiot

  • Split, crack, crush call it what you want. But yes, that is exactly what a bike helmet is suppose to do, absorb the energy. And seeing that I suffered no head injuries, and all three were Giro helmets maybe you should "look into it"

  • Split, crack, crush call it what you want. But yes, that is exactly what a bike helmet is suppose to do, absorb the energy. And seeing that I suffered no head injuries, and all three were Giro helmets maybe you should "look into it"

  • i heard that if your older than 18 it isnt required to wear a helmet

  • Thank you for your kindness

    It's very useful for me

  • hey thanks for posting this on youtube.

  • my bike has more rust than the titanic. and its about as reliable

  • Great safety film with sensible advice! My video, BUCKYSTEIN (#7) VS. CRITICAL MASS ROAD RAGE! gives the same lessons yours does in a "half ass, incomprehensible way"

  • Be a " roll " model ... get it ? I like the guy that had the helmet on backwards , he rocks ...

  • Very nice... my hero! Wanna see some amazing bike guys? Check out "safetybike" on you tube. You'll be amazed I promise. Safetybike safetybike safetybike!!!!

  • Wish I saw video before buying mountian bike, its to high and when I buried front tire last week- cross bar and my private area had slam contest, I went to local bike shop that was voted ""best in area, so why is bike wrong size? why o why

  • Caus of you didnt go to the best shop - the best shops are they where the staff ride them selves, and they sell bike parts only so that you can build your own bike! :P

  • Sometimes you get a bike sales person that acts like a car salesman. They are very knowledgable in one feild of bikes but not the others. They usally apply the wrong info to the wrong bike. You got to do your own reaserch then ask for help.

  • It's the same everywhere you ride. Not all

motorists think you belong on the road.

I've been yelled at to GET OFF THE ROAD,

had things thrown at me....ect. I've had punks call me RETARD, cause I always wear

a helmet. I ended up going without it a few times, so I wouldn't get called names.

  • Funny view. Get the hell out of your fucking car and stop polluting the air. As long as bikes are not forbidden, you have to share roads with us on bikes - under no different law.

    Have a nice traffic jam.

  • Dont lump us and that idiot together. Lots of people ride bikes. Unfourtantly that including the guy you where talking about.

  • And just where would you have them ride, while they're trying to get to work? Modern American cities tend not to build proper bicycle paths, or even minor roads that can be used for getting from A to B. So the "fast paced" roads (if you call 35 mph fast) is the only navigable route from place to place.

  • lol my old bike didnt have any brakes every stop was scary

  • try riding in boston...

these dont apply. if a car doesnt hit you your first day, your good to ride

  • Good video. One might quibble about particular details, but overall very sensible.

  • Surprisingly sensible advice. Simple information presented well - kind of disappointed they didn't mention the good sense of wearing cycling gloves.

  • Great safety film. With the prices of fuel in the USA rising we can all use this to share the road.

  • dat is jetzt nich euer ernst?

  • Since we are talking about changing lanes... See my video (click ok my name SafeTurn) - it's a commercial for our new cycling gadger - a fully _automatic_ portable turn indicator that you wear on your hand.

    Thanks,

    Michael

  • you should see the right lane i have to ride at midnight on the way home from work. i pray the whole way down the hill hoping i wont catch something.

    scary.

  • WOW, did you see that drain grate!

I'm glad in the UK we have the drain grates across the flow of traffic. Probably due to the fact we have had drainage in all towns and cities for 100+ years but that was scary, they are like tram lines.

  • That was the worst drain grate I've ever seen. It would be like trying to ride over an open manhole.

  • Also, no mention of not wearing baggy pants. Pity the poor hippie who gets their flares gaught in the cogs!

  • I'm surprised she didn't mention dayglo & reflective jackets. I don't know any serious cyclist who doesn't wear one. Also, why hasn't anyone got a bell on their bike? I think it's a legal requirement here in the UK I think.

  • All bikes sold after may 1st this year are required to be fitted with a bell but like white front reflectors you can remove them legally.

I have a bell for when I overtake other cyclists and for pedestrians who walk out in front of me.

They are important for people who use their bikes on the highway but not a legal requirement.

  • Only problem I had was during the left turn sequences. The guy should have been more centered in the lane to make him self more visible and less likely to get under cut by the SUV behind him

  • Definitely, the cyclist should have just taken the left turn lane to avoid a squeeze out.

  • I was wondering that. I looked at it and though, "Wow, I've been turning left the wrong way all this time." I'm glad to hear that the way I perceived to be the safest has some confirmation from you guys. Thanks!

  • Yep that's her, Selene Yeager.

  • Is that the "Fit Chick" lady I see in the back pages of Bicycling magazine?

Anyway...nice simple and straight to the point info-video.

  • Great intro vid ... life is entertainment enough folks, so watch this then go be entertained... by life on a bike

  • Hello.

Thought all you UK cycling enthusiasts would like to know that this Saturday (March 3rd) there is a 92 page Guide to Cycling free with The Guardian.

It's going to be choc full of tips advice and help on a wide variety of cycling subjects from safety to security, fitness, buying and also a comprehensive list of UK routes ranging from family oriented to serious off-road and sportive routes for the dedicated cyclists among us.

    Definitely worth a read.

    Regards.

    Cycleone

  • Nice little video.

It's a shame they don't cover more about basic maintenance, and cycling in real road conditions.

More than I've seen from a UK perspective though (ie. nothing).
