this is so gorgeous.. l love the ways it's done. i like Peggy, and the way she sings and accompanied with her facial expression.. she's so cute. And Benny moves, and looks at her like.. 'what a cutie' and he dances good too. to me, it's good to see Benny at this time of his life. i only saw him when he was old. i heard he was pretty demanding and did not tolerate wrong doing from his musicians. i'm not sure he would let any of his musicians hook up with her.. cuz i can see it in his eyes.. lol.
I like it very much !!!, it does sounds just great !!!, amazing !!!, easy flow ... ... and absolutely not as sterile as most of the modern and actual music.
What really amazes me about this I guess is that it was done all off 1 mic as the mixing board wouldn't come about till 1958. The arranging of musicians makes it so it just flows and mixes well, pretty amazing if you think about it.
@WindowsBreakerG4 They had mixing boards in 1942. In Columbia studios, they used a total of 6 mikes and inputs. The magic was in the studios. Mixers had little they could do on the boards, so mike placement and sonics were paramount.
Say, is that "Georgia Jubilee" in the song intro? (Or at least a cannibalized version of the clarinet figure that he played in "Georgia Jubilee" back in the early 30s)
Saw the movie last night on TV containing this song--Stage Door Canteen from 1943. So this is Peggy Lee in her early 20s. Note the bass saxophone in Goodman's band. Very rate.
Awesome. Only word to describe it. It's a terrible shame kids my age don't listen to good music like this. There are no modern artists who can match Benny Goodman and Peggy Lee.
Such a delight to hear and see this feast of music........its a reminder that we live in today's world of endless amateur night spice dolls crap, where everyone has talent, but no one can actually sing or play an instrument, or dance :)
@jimmymcc1941 Ah man... it is impossible to not agree. You are so right and i just think like you that today "talent" is more a word than anything else. Listen to this, her voice... those musicians, really great. Nothin' to see with today's crapness.
LOL. Bless. How far they had to go. I thought they'd cut her out of this for the video of the recent remix and had her interact with modern subjects taking the place of the original ones, but obviously technology isn't that advanced yet unless it was from a different video
@crazyshy84 There is a full vocal version with available as a sound recording. I assume that since it was Goodman's band, no way was he going to let her sing all 4 verses and confine himself to fills. From what I've read, she wasn't terribly happy working with Goodman. He made her sing everything in his former vocalist's (Helen Forrest) keys, and was very restricted. She re-recorded this tune later as a solo artist, and the music siwngs rather than plods! But it's a fun clip anyway.
This is just great music. A reminder both, that entertainment was an artistic creation....and that these artists were playing for a generation of Americans...as in this audience...who made great sacrifices for their country and the world.
Some of the best music ever recorded. No synthesizers,no computer enhancements, no pyrotechnics, and nothing blows up in the background. Just some very talented people playing instruments made of wood, brass, and ivory and a great singer. to me. it just doesn't get too much better.
It's weird I like a lot of Peggy Lee songs but I usually like covers of them better. Like The Cramps' cover of "Fever" and Mob of God's cover of this song. Don't get me wrong, I still lover her originals.
I'm a guitarist, and have been influenced by Jeff Beck. I play fusion, heavy metal, and World Beat, yet this is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard in my life! The original version of "Pompton Turnpike", by Charlie Barnett, would probably rank second.
The discipline of the entire band is fantastic!!! Can you imagine anything like this these days? I admire Brian Setzer& Orchestra, but this band sets a standard of perfection, possibly never equalled
They do have bands like this nowadays they're called orchestras, nobody ever goes to see them. Instead the music industry sold its soul and we have crap that's played on the radio and kids don't notice the difference. There's nothing to admire about Kanye West pushing buttons where as this was impressive and inspiring.
Right on. His moment of "contribution" to McCartney performing "Yesterday" at the Grammys in 2007 (2006?) was to say "That's right" at the end of every verse!!! That's not right, that's wrong. Even his "Faster Harder ..." "song" (2007) is a copy, that is, the title is, which is really all it is anyway as the music sound like something else too.
Yet another wonderful clip - this time of super sexy Queen Peggy and the King of Swing. Oh what we miss live these days and thankyou for posting this glimpse back to the halcyon years! Benny certainly had great foresight when he introduced Peggy to us all with her very first recording Elmer's Tune in 1941 and boy! Didn't she blossom
get out of here and get me some money toooooooooooooooooooooo
