This is a all time classic! The first time I watched this movie and Christian Bales's character got shot I yelled outloud; "Oh My God!" I was that shook up...great movie!
@joseph150ish The Rancher showed him what him and his crew have become. he doesn't want that anymore. And he had to kill his crew to stop their violence. He couldn't just "tell them" then get on the train. It's about moral respect that those days had that doesn't exist anymore because everyone now thinks they're entitled to shit.
when i first watch the ending to this movie i literly yelled out OHHH SHITT! cuz that shootout scene russell crowe did was fucking amazing. I love it when westerns have that quick draw scene. why can't all westerns be like the movie tombstone and 3:10 to Yuma.
I don't think this is about enemies respecting each other, because Wade and Evans aren't enemies at all. Evans is just a man who wants to do something honorable that Mark and Will will remember him for. Wade at first was respecting his wish, but upon Evans's death, well, I think it reminded him of whatever happened to his mother, and Wade didn't want William to feel that. And who knows, maybe it also changed Wade, since he seemed to have felt some hint of grief and sorrow for Evans' death.
1.) These are real gangsters' and that's REAL respect (The part between Ben and Dan)
2.) I'm NOT fangirling, but the part when Logan saw his dad get shot... I really felt bad for him : (
3.) This is one of the best movie remakes I've ever seen! Amazing acting by everyone, very well done cinematography as well as sound mixing, and my favorite... such an amazing score!
It bothers me so much Charlie got killed because of the one admirable quality he had. A villain should die because of his cruelty, selfishness, vanity etc etc, not because he has undying loyalty to his boss. Oh well. I guess I'm wanting too much.
Well boss, we tracked you across three counties, killed over a hundred people, lost many of our men, got burned, shot and beaten but now we've finally found y-BANG! (Shot in the face)
did anyone read my comment! Ben Wade said no and Charlie kept shooting? When the Boss says no and you shoot what happens? Remember in the movie when he sajd he can lead these bunch because he is evil. If they don't listen guess what you get the BEN WADE!
I don't think anybody gets the ending. Although Charlie Prince was totally loyal to the end, When Russell Crowe's Character Ben Wade yells No, that means No! Charlie kept shooting. The leader of your pack of wolves said No! ya dumb ass, Russell is ruthless, 2nd in Command got stupid and paid the debt. Period! Apparently very few leaders out there to understand this.
Wade knew once he showed any weakness then it was just a matter of time before Charlie would have taken him out... Besides it flashed on him that Bale's life was worth more then that 'pack of dogs'... The ending is perfect.
I mean seriously? Charlie eis like hysterically loyal to Wade, everythinh else seems pretty loyal to, and they were risking his life for him...couldn't Wade jut give them some kind of a signal, like, DON'T KILL THIS GUY I LIKE HIM? Instead he prefers to kill of people, who were his companions in battle and risked his life for him, just for a dude he came to respect in a few days
@reactri because he may have been completely cold-blooded but he grew to respect dan and right before this scene he admitted that he's escaped from Yuma prison twice. So his death was pointless.
@RonanMacQuarrie what like in "For a Few Dollars More"? when Indio used his own men to kill themselves so he could have a larger share of money? enemies have never respected their own men in any Western that i recall. unless you're talking about Wade respecting Evans. in that case then you're right. i love how this hard ass turns against his own men in favor of a family man just trying to do the right thing. great movie.
this is one of those moments i remember VERY well in the theater...first i hear everyone's shocked reaction as soon as Ben Wade yells "NO!!!"...i remember even seeing someones jaw wide open next o me. and THEN...when Ben Wade gives that death-stare at Charlie Prince, everyone seemed SO pumped up. @amr2286 I don't think it was out of mistrust of his gang, it was more of an anger reaction. After hearing Dan's story, he became, in Ben's mind, the only man worth saving. And seeing Charlie shoot him in the back, after Dan had come so far, was too much for Ben to stand.
@TheJake0fTrades but you have to realize that Ben's character is complex, and most his actions are well thought out. He was probably with his gang longer than he was with evan so there was a connection to his gang, and they had been loyal to him up to this point. Surely his reasoning could of detained him from shooting all of his gang, but to justify his actions, he probably thought what I mentioned before. He understood his enemy, and honored him more than he honored his loyal pack...
@amr2286 That's actually not true, they (especially Charlie) proved their loyality to him. The actual thing was that at this point he felt bad for Bale's character, only a few scenes before this one Bale told him the truth about his leg.
It was a mixture of pity and admiration which made him do what he did, the only reason why he still entered the train when there was no one to stop him was to grant him his final wish and save his family, because in his eyes he deserved it.
@amr2286 If thats the case why would his men go to such lenghts to free their Boss, riding halfway across country if they would betray him at any given point? It was Wade himself who made it very clear that if you mess up, you're pretty much dead. He shot the careless gangmember at the coach for the good of the whole outfit. Now he got himself captured he can't expect his man to come and free him. But his men remain loyal Hows that for character and perserverance? No respect for that?
@TheMossad921 Same. Don't get me wrong, I understand he connected and came to respect the rancher but still, that was one hell of a loyal gang and you could not ask for a better lieutenant,
You see the way Chrstian Bale's character brought his prisoner to Yuma, not for the money, not for the glory, but because it was the right thing to do, because the other men didn't give their lives in vein. @Bllasae no one else has a moral compass. You know who doesn't have feelings? Robots, and if your a robot then murdering you in cold blood would be considered recycling, not killing.
@Bllasae everyone has a moral compass, not true asshole. Oh yeah and the point of movies is to bring you into them, that's what good movies do, make you feel like your on a voyage with them, in outterspace, or on the battlefield. Of course I know the movie is fake, there's a difference between a wuss and an idiot. You can call me girly if you like because I'm sensative but don't ever call me a wuss or a coward. I have more balls than you will ever have, I've fought countless fights
@Bllasae fights that I knew going into them I could not win but I fight anyways for principal. I laugh off 20 ft ramps at ski resort that I could easily die from if I fall the wrong way. I have fought off abusive husbands and boyfriends so they wouldn't beat up their girlfriend even tho I didn't know if the boyfriend or husband had a knife or a gun. Because I'm not a coward and I know what I believe in, part of the reason i cried is because I could put myself in the shoes of christian bale
well he says earlier that he can and will get out of yuma so its no problem for him to go but if he aint on the train to yuma then christian bale's family doesn't get shit, how is this up for discussion?
I don't think some of you realize the significance of one of the shots that wasn't included at the very end. Russell Crowe whistles, calling his horse as the train goes away and the horse runs next to the train. He wasn't planning on going to Yuma and escaping, he just wanted to make it look like he was going to the son of Christian Bale and in about 2 minutes he was going to jump out of the train onto the horse.
he went to yuma but escaped because a little more after that part he called his horse while on the treain which he most likely escaped and helped bell because he had respect for the man
@brainsbeer5 yeah that's true. i haven't replayed that part but for the longest time i beat myself up because i thought it was just because i wasn't quick enough to mark all them heads
@wunderbeast dude its okay I played the game, I would have killed them all if I used the henry repeater which held 21 bullets. I'm still pissed off though, John was a legend, Rockstar could have made so many adventures with him in the next few red dead games, that would've been awesome. Jack is still cool though.
why did russell crowe help christian bale to get him to the train??? and why did he shot his friend?? and did crowe go to yuma and got hung or did he escape?? lol
@sloppiejoe87 christian bale was a prisoner and russell crowe was paid money (forgot how much) to get him to the train. He shot his friends because he felt sry for russell, he just volunteered to get him on the train in time to get some money for his family (the movie doesn't tell you that but you kinda had to pick that one up by yourself), and christian bale gets on the train himself at the end of this movie, but that's where they ended it, it didn't show if he actually was hung.
It's sort of remarkable the amount of views people can still express about Ben Wade's character. I'm doing an assignment on this movie, characters in particular, and it is interesting to note about the change of heart of Dan Evans. The question I suppose many people discuss, is how much has Ben's heart changed for Dan, during the course of the film.
On a personal note by the way, great movie, Russel and Christian, nailed their personas perfectly!

Charlie was a sloppy plank and deserved to die in the end if your going to do something do it properly. Have to admit it though, that was one sweet jacket and pistol rig. Do his guns take the same round as the .44 colt? That slug is a beast but its a tad slower to reload than just changing the wheel/chamber of those.
@ProtoformX Naaah. i used to have the 1860 army pattern and two peacemakers but now have one, other was given to a friend as a gift. unloading the cartridges from a pm is pretty quick but loading can take time unless you practice and tbh i dont really practice. figured id be pretty dead LOL
People that get mad that Ben Wade shot all his gang need to realize that he didn't give two shits about any of them to begin with. At the beginning of the movie he shoots one of them in the throat for fuckin up once, and then when Charlie Prince told Ben Wade that he would wait for him in Mexico Ben was just like "okay Charlie.." in a dismissive and annoyed tone. I see Bale's character as one of the first people Wade actually respected, and he also envied his family. Thats why wade capd em
I just hate this ending. It makes no sense. I think that Wade was a really egoistic, bad bad guy & I liked it this way, bu at the ending the turned like 180 degrees around. From that suffocating thing on it's pure bullshit :/
@natchilupin he's egoistic SOB ate the end above everything else, he didn't turned to good, quite the contrary, he showed his real face, of a man that is absolutely self serving
So... the gunplay switches between stupid accuracy and Patrick Bateman trucking in plain sight. I mean, he has his back turned and he's just standing there, exchanging dialogue with Russel Crowe. I've never fired a gun in my life and I could've made that shot from the rooftop if I were a greasy bastard with a cool-looking rifle. I really could've.
If you think there's anything heroic or dutiful about dying on general principle -- see here: martyrdom -- you're probably a pretty cool guy.
I think Charlie Prince and the rest of the crew were killed to protect Bales family. He got back on the train so as to prove to the son that his father did not die in vein. But of course, he planed to escape again.
@kamikrazi123 The reason he didn't is because then Dan wouldn't have done something heroic. Escorting a prisoner while nobody shoots you? That's not heroic. And Wade wanted Dan to become a hero.
You mest th ebest bit, with Evans son and Wade looking at each other, Wade knowing he deserves to be shot now redeemed, Evans wanting to do it but not wanting his fathers heroic death to be in vein allows him on the train, which Wade willingly boards.
He considered Bale his friend something he probably never had his entire life. Could you see him telling the story of his mother leaving him to any of his crew? Thats why he killed his crew because they could never understand why he would want to go to prison. Because he respected his friend and wanted to grant his dying wish.
Like with the true Hand of God, this one in the end brings swift and final retribution and vengeance. The owner of the hand said "No!". That law was broken. And the law brings the sentence of death to the trespasser. All were guilty. All died.
One of my absolute favourite westerns. The art of this genre is saying the most with the least words and this ending scene does that perfectly.
Charlie Prince loves and idolizes Wade and the realization and hurt in his eyes just before he's killed is a thing of beauty. In that instant he knows that he never was anything to Wade, just another croney that he would dump the instant it became necessary.
@AllMightyBosch what did you think of open range with kevin costner and robert duvall? cuz thats my favorite modern western and this one is my second.
charlie is a badass, mean motherfucker. but wades badasser and an even meaner motherfucker haha. i woulda loved to have been alive then with that kind of skill.
@putyourmoney Very true. The moment Charlie turns around and sees the look in Ben's eyes...he knows he has overstepped the mark and is about pay it back with his life. Wade's "Hand of God" pistol is not to be messed with!
@KINGJRDOG sry, i meant the way ben wade switched to the good guy's side so easily. Wade was the ultimate villain and the movie didn't even remotely show wade progress to the side of good, it was just like an instant switch. And the talk that cristian bale gave wade that made him convert was pretty lame....i mean, if it was really moving, but....damn.....that i think was the only flaw....but man was that flaw big!!!
@Ac1dlicous See I disagree, I don't think Wade was switching to good, he was just pissed that Charlie Prince killed a man that he respected. Like he told Bale, he'd broken out of Yuma so he was obviously planning to do it again. I think he just realized that Bale's character was a man who deserved a chance to do something heroic but never got that chance. That's why I think he was willing to go to Yuma.
@ChocThund21 i agree with that... i think he felt sympathy for bale and wanted to help him with this one thing.. and yea he was going to escape from yuma cause it shows him whistling for his horse while hes on the train right before the credits starts
@ChocThund21 I dont think he switched to good in that moment but Bales life certaintly made impression on Wade, his character was good and that inspired Wade to do a "little good" too. Thats what i believe this movie shows, that life and love is stronger than hate and death.
Yep. Well said. I think Wade is an intelligent person who respects very few people and loves a good challenge. It's clear he viewed Bale as worthy of respect and not his crew. His crew killed someone better than them in his eyes and had to pay.
This is a all time classic! The first time I watched this movie and Christian Bales's character got shot I yelled outloud; "Oh My God!" I was that shook up...great movie!

Bllasae 8 months ago
@Bllasae everyone has a moral compass, not true asshole. Oh yeah and the point of movies is to bring you into them, that's what good movies do, make you feel like your on a voyage with them, in outterspace, or on the battlefield. Of course I know the movie is fake, there's a difference between a wuss and an idiot. You can call me girly if you like because I'm sensative but don't ever call me a wuss or a coward. I have more balls than you will ever have, I've fought countless fights
apolllos7 8 months ago
@Bllasae fights that I knew going into them I could not win but I fight anyways for principal. I laugh off 20 ft ramps at ski resort that I could easily die from if I fall the wrong way. I have fought off abusive husbands and boyfriends so they wouldn't beat up their girlfriend even tho I didn't know if the boyfriend or husband had a knife or a gun. Because I'm not a coward and I know what I believe in, part of the reason i cried is because I could put myself in the shoes of christian bale
apolllos7 8 months ago
@apolllos7
Well that's your fault that you put yourself into the shoes of a fictional movie character, not mine.

well he says earlier that he can and will get out of yuma so its no problem for him to go but if he aint on the train to yuma then christian bale's family doesn't get shit, how is this up for discussion?
zecore666 9 months ago
I don't think some of you realize the significance of one of the shots that wasn't included at the very end. Russell Crowe whistles, calling his horse as the train goes away and the horse runs next to the train. He wasn't planning on going to Yuma and escaping, he just wanted to make it look like he was going to the son of Christian Bale and in about 2 minutes he was going to jump out of the train onto the horse.
ShatteredSteelFilms 9 months ago
he went to yuma but escaped because a little more after that part he called his horse while on the treain which he most likely escaped and helped bell because he had respect for the man

wunderbeast 9 months ago
@wunderbeast dude its okay I played the game, I would have killed them all if I used the henry repeater which held 21 bullets. I'm still pissed off though, John was a legend, Rockstar could have made so many adventures with him in the next few red dead games, that would've been awesome. Jack is still cool though.

why did russell crowe help christian bale to get him to the train??? and why did he shot his friend?? and did crowe go to yuma and got hung or did he escape?? lol
sloppiejoe87 9 months ago
@sloppiejoe87 shoot***
sloppiejoe87 9 months ago
@sloppiejoe87 christian bale was a prisoner and russell crowe was paid money (forgot how much) to get him to the train. He shot his friends because he felt sry for russell, he just volunteered to get him on the train in time to get some money for his family (the movie doesn't tell you that but you kinda had to pick that one up by yourself), and christian bale gets on the train himself at the end of this movie, but that's where they ended it, it didn't show if he actually was hung.

Ben Wade = a western version of Horatio Caine. just kidding, i didnt mean disrespect to the character or movie
LuisRamirez666 9 months ago
It's sort of remarkable the amount of views people can still express about Ben Wade's character. I'm doing an assignment on this movie, characters in particular, and it is interesting to note about the change of heart of Dan Evans. The question I suppose many people discuss, is how much has Ben's heart changed for Dan, during the course of the film.
On a personal note by the way, great movie, Russel and Christian, nailed their personas perfectly!
PS: Is Charlie gay in film for Ben??? -_o

Hardrada88 10 months ago
@Hardrada88 You mean .45 Long Colt, right? And those are way faster to reload than the SAA/Peacemaker.
ProtoformX 10 months ago
@ProtoformX Naaah. i used to have the 1860 army pattern and two peacemakers but now have one, other was given to a friend as a gift. unloading the cartridges from a pm is pretty quick but loading can take time unless you practice and tbh i dont really practice. figured id be pretty dead LOL
Hardrada88 10 months ago

So... the gunplay switches between stupid accuracy and Patrick Bateman trucking in plain sight.

But of course, he planed to escape again.
arbonac 11 months ago
Realistically speaking, Wade should've just ordered his men not to shoot way before.
kamikrazi123 11 months ago
@kamikrazi123 The reason he didn't is because then Dan wouldn't have done something heroic. Escorting a prisoner while nobody shoots you? That's not heroic. And Wade wanted Dan to become a hero.

KINGJRDOG 1 year ago
@KINGJRDOG sry, i meant the way ben wade switched to the good guy's side so easily. Wade was the ultimate villain and the movie didn't even remotely show wade progress to the side of good, it was just like an instant switch. And the talk that cristian bale gave wade that made him convert was pretty lame....i mean, if it was really moving, but....damn.....that i think was the only flaw....but man was that flaw big!!!
Ac1dlicous 1 year ago

midnighter1339 1 year ago
@Ac1dlicous See I disagree, I don't think Wade was switching to good, he was just pissed that Charlie Prince killed a man that he respected. Like he told Bale, he'd broken out of Yuma so he was obviously planning to do it again. I think he just realized that Bale's character was a man who deserved a chance to do something heroic but never got that chance. That's why I think he was willing to go to Yuma.
ChocThund21 1 year ago 64
@ChocThund21 i agree with that... i think he felt sympathy for bale and wanted to help him with this one thing.. and yea he was going to escape from yuma cause it shows him whistling for his horse while hes on the train right before the credits starts
kokaly15 1 year ago
@ChocThund21 I dont think he switched to good in that moment but Bales life certaintly made impression on Wade, his character was good and that inspired Wade to do a "little good" too. Thats what i believe this movie shows, that life and love is stronger than hate and death.
varfordogjesus 1 year ago
@ChocThund21
Yep. Well said. I think Wade is an intelligent person who respects very few people and loves a good challenge. It's clear he viewed Bale as worthy of respect and not his crew. His crew killed someone better than them in his eyes and had to pay.
