we were the first to play it on the field (right after Robert W. Smith wrote it for the air force band). You could say the Magic '96 corps was the anvil that the piece was pounded on to create the marching version (you're welcome). Not only did he Get 10 teenagers to play the 7/8 section on the contra bass bugle (tuba), one night he sang the entire piece...every part...it was sick!
I think this would be an awesome song to play in band. :] amazing double-tongueing, trumpets. And of course, the top was nicely balanced. We're doing 'The Last Battle' by Robert W. Smith in band right now. :] I can't wait until we're ready to play it at our concert. The saxaphone solo was amazing, too. Nice vibratto.

I have to be honest...Robert W. Smith is a terrible writer for advanced bands, Absolutely no sophistication, and his use of anvil is clunky and nawkward.
@bshelto1: i kinda agree with you. Smith used the exact triplet run in Ireland and in songs of sailor and sea...but I think he outdid himself in this one, and the anvil fits perfectly in the music
Who did the arrangement on this? This isn't the version that is on the Divine Comedy album. At first i was hesitant to keep listening after I head the change into the minor key at 3:16 but the way it is layered I think produced an overall greater effect.
1:28 to 1:48 is so beautiful. then the explosion at 1:48!

my drum corps "The Magic of Orlando" played this in 1996. We placed 8th at DCI. Robert Smith was our program coordinator.

Then don't listen. Take your comments elsewhere to someone who cares to hear your opinion.

The band that is playing in this recording is very good. Great french horn solo and awesome double tounging in the trumpets.
