I dont know if you guys have heard yet, but the engineer shown in this video (Lynn Nystrom) passed away last night 5/5/2010. He is shown doind what he loves the most of all. Congradualtions on a nice tribute video. LIttle did he or anybody know that this would be his last trip. May god rest him in peace.
Possibly one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! 60 years ago, it happened every day of the week, all over America! 70 miles per hour, and look at that valve gear!
Born in '58, steam engines were before my time but I must of seen a few for in '59-'61 we were in Salina, Kansas. Really grew up with the electric trains of Europe. But the 4-8-4 series of locomotives as in 844 here are amazing. It's interesting the different looks & styles. I always marvel at the drive linkage churning away exposed, and how it all has to be balanced to do that. Then there's the engineer & crew, standing behind that big ass boiler.
wow you wouldnt think the ride was bummpy wiht such a large locomotive but when you zommed in you could see them bouncing up and down and the tinder behind them moving up and down wow. love you videos they are great. you are one luck son of a bean dip I tell yea.
very nice video I was able to get a brief few looks of 844 on the way south before it arrived in Ft Worth I just wish I had time to chase it like this and do some paceing shots where did you pace it at I waited several hours for it to show up late in Aubrey Texas but it was well worth it and saw it again leaving Denton climbing Brickyard hill
i don't know much about the steam locos in the USA, but i imagine locos like this were very hungry for coal, does it have a conveyor system to feed the boiler or is it all done by shovel?
@Kenworth1986 These were originally coal fired, but some, as well as some challengers, were converted to oil. Coal was fed by an auger screw, as the oil is injected, of course by the fireman. BTW, this is the last steam loco delivered to the UP in 1944, and also the only steam loco NEVER RETIRED from the UP roster!
I am so pleased i did my boilermans test when i worked on the New Zealand Rail'
