to the people saying this is good for people who have lost a hand: how would this benefit them? lol. 1. it's controlled with triggers, so you have to use a real hand to control it. 2. it uses an air compressor. will the person carry an air compressor on their back with a mile long extension cord to keep it plugged in? hahahaha. it IS pointless
this method is lame compared to almost all the other methods being used elsewhere. in fact, it seems each finger only has one of two options: opened or closed, with no range in between. plus, you see some of them not opening the whole way upon release, because of the weak elastic approach. i'm not impressed. lol
@killer120070507 It isn't pointless, it's an animatronic device for use in robotics or special effects. Why do you waste your time looking at videos that are beyond your understanding? Has the world run out of porn sites for you? And on that thought, you may very well need one of these hands when you've worn yours out your own hand clicking on internet porn.
wow nice system. iv never seen elasticligaments before. air power is a cool i dea too. when i saw the popcan, i was like "alright its gonna break" but it didnt. good video
Solenoid-controlled cables would be simpler to implement than electromagnets, and would provide greater force, but magnetic technology is not the way to go. The risk of disrupting other devices with the EMF interference is too great.
Instead, run a search on Electroactive Polymer. It reacts exactly as human muscle tissue does. In great quantities, it becomes expensive, but the technology is improving daily.
instead of air, they should use a pair of opposing force electromagnets for each of the knuckles and control the power of the movement through electric current. easier.
It's a novel method of actuating fingers, using corrugated tubing and compressed air to provide the motion and grasping force. It was designed as a spinoff of the main CHARLI humanoid robot project and was entered in (and won) the Compressed Air and Gas Institute(CAGI)'s Innovation competition. The goal of the project was to provide human like manipulative capabilities at a low cost using compressed air as a power source.
The video is of the first prototype, and there were some issues with the return force in a couple of the fingers, but this was fixed shortly thereafter.
you can make this a bit longer and turn down and up this robot hand...

Ought to replace the elastic with something else - it'll wear down with use over time.

@killer120070507 Why is it pointless? Someone who lost a hand in a car accident would get a huge benefit from this. Sheesh!

Notice how it doesn't break anything it holds.
BlockisticStudios 2 years ago
It probably couldn't. It looks like this model doesn't have a lot of force behind it. You also notice that the can they gave it was empty.

and the point of this "hand" is...?

The ring and pinky fingers of the hand does not seem to be as responsive the thumb, index and middle fingers. Good attempt though.

Derekcsy90 - I wonder, are you ring and pinky fingers as responsive as your other three digits? LOL - I get your point though.
