I automatically fell in love with the song and the Rachid when I first this song.
And, is it just me, or does Rachid seem to be drunk while he was performing this song? This is my first time seeing this performance and I could tell he's totally in limbo.
Rachid is great, I hope he get's that little thing with the alcohol fixed....Barra Barra is a genious song, I can listen to over and over and it just doesn't get boring...awesome!
yes. It delivers me a great deep feeling every single time I listen to it.. Really brilliant..I hope he stops drinking, cause even when he's drunk on stage he's great, imagine him without it..I think much better.
I've been a Rachid Taha fan for several years now and I always fantasied that Eno would work with him... produce a record.. but this is a start perhaps...?
@linzo005 Actually it's very commonly used in different Arabic dialects today and it has been "Arabized" centuries ago, the world "Barra" is used in not only Algeria, but in many Arabic-speaking countries such as Egypt, the Levantine countries and some Gulf dialects.
It's originally Persian or Indian by the way but was transmitted to the Arabs and then from the Arabs to the places they conquered.
I believe Algerian is majorly Arabic, but heavily influenced by other languages, since I am Egyptian for instance and I can understand the Algerian dialect.
I might not be a reference though since I am in love with the Algerian Rai music already, probably I was taught the dialect this way, but still I didn't find it very hard to learn.
@linzo005 Oh yeah I was actually referring to the tongue, not the people. Algerians are not necessarily Arabic ethnic wise, true, just like how it is in most Arabic-speaking countries today.
Tell me; does it annoy you when people call you an Arab? would you rather call yourself a Berber/Imazighy or Arab?
Awesome beat, dark and powerful, must be a blast to see it live.
Could someone please post the meaning of the song? I'm swedish, havent got a clue what he is singing about. The lyrics "bara bara" ("get out, get out" somebody wrote) sounds scarily like automatic guns blasting, especially from 3:40. Anyway, powerful song!
its about that people no longer have trust in each other, that there is only hate and violence outside (barra barra) and that things are getting worse
You got it Patrick .. the Dalai Lama says that mistrust is the basis for war ... forgive my not quoting how well he expresses it .. but you have the sentiment right. And the meaning is about as deep as you can go when it comes to the basis of war.
That's really quite unnecessary -- if someone disagrees with you, they have every right to "thumbs down" your comment as well as mark your message as Spam. It's called free speech... one of those American tenets you most likely forget about.
it was my understanding that god usually does not bless murderers, whether they be american soldiers, sectarian gangs that murder their neighbors, or members of a "resistence" that blow up their countrymen by the dozens or hundreds with trucks full of explosives.
in fact i'd be willing to bet he frowns on killing in general
Bedziak005, the instrument's arabic name is "OUD". It's the predecessor of the western "LUTE" (but they are not the same thing). And the player's name (featured in the video) is Hakim Hamadouche.
@linzo005 tais -toi vous chercher toujours a kabylizer tout les arabes ,je suis Algérienne et arabe et fière de l'être et si t'es pas content bahhhh tant pis pour toi

Ca veut pas dire que il y'a pas des algeriens qui sont pas arabes, noirs ou meme turques.

barra barra means outside the house or exactly in the street. It is not get out get out as some people have mentioned it.
jamaisn 3 years ago
bonjour,
it's depand in out slang ur talking :
BARRA BARRA cen be : "GET OUT GET OUT" or " OUTSIDE THE HOMELAND "
but in this song it's more about the situation ,of immigrante pp as in france....
nabylg 3 years ago
I'm Arab and I assure you, Barra Barra in this song means "Go out!"
MechRulez 2 years ago
MechRulez,
Barra means out but it is not Arabic,it is Algerian
Out in formal Arabic is kharej
Algerians in general speak darja or Algerian,a mixture of languages and Tamazight
linzo005 1 year ago

MechRulez 1 year ago
MechRulez ,
Yeah, that is right! But in school when we learn Arabic we don't use the word barra.
We use only the formal word kharej
Persians use the borowed Arabic word kharej too and they have something closer to the word barra
Do you consider Algerois Arabic or a mixture of languages?

MechRulez ,
I condere myself Amazigh, because that what God created me
Some people tried so hard to erase our identity for political and arrogant reasons, but it didn't work
They use Islam as an excuse when Islam is against any kind of discrimination
linzo005 1 year ago 2
@linzo005 and what´s mean barrah or barrauah....they use this word in Tunisia anyway...maybe it´s not arab langue ...berber then....
madamcherif 1 year ago
@madamcherif Barra means outside in Algerian and it is the same in Tunisian
The meaning could change if you add another word like in Algerian when we say aya barra, and it means go out or go away, depends of the situation.
I am not sure if it is Amazigh word or not, because my Tamazight is poor
But i am sure it is not an Arabic word.

In this concert Hakim Hamadouche plays an algerian mandole, but it's an oud what you hear in the album. Mandoles are fretted and ouds are fretless.
