At the full hour mark, the bell then tolls once for every hour that has passed (i.e., at 6 o'clock, six notes are struck).
Hearing the chimes of Big Ben at 12 noon was so enchanting for us when we were in London in Nov. of 2006. I especially enjoyed the zooming in for a closeup view of the clock face in this video. Thanks!
