Sure. Let's talk imagination. Here's a few fairy tales for ya: Life arising from dead matter all by its lonesome, and a Universe creating itself from nothing. And as far as the "What if you had been born in China" thing - read a newspaper sometime. The fastest growing religion in China is Christianity. So where you are born has nothing at all to do with whether one becomes a Christian or not.
buddyboy55, just because u are scientifically illiterate '' Life arising from dead matter all by its lonesome, and a Universe creating itself from nothing.'' sigh go to your local library and get some books out.
Yeah? Well the biggest problems schools had back then was kids talking during class, running in the halls, and chewing gum. Now, it's drugs, guns, and assaults.
Who provided the drugs and the guns, teenagers? Are you saying that every school in the US has these problems? You talk like an out of touch senior citizen. That's mostly because you're a christian who is completely out of touch with reality. God is a myth and Jesus doesn't exist. Christianity is a copycat religion. The Bible is filled with contradictions and falsehoods. You work in a bookstore that has one section...FICTION.
God doesn't exist? Hmm, well then, I guess the universe created itself from nothing, and life created itself from dead matter. Yeah, that's so much more intelligent to believe in. Jesus never existed? There is plenty of extra-Biblical documentation that mention Jesus as existing during the first century. Christianity a copycat religion? Prove it. I have plenty of resources that prove your claim is a myth. The only "fiction" here is what comes out of your mouth..
God has always existed. If He didn't, by definition, He wouldn't BE God. You cannot make God subjective to His own creation. You, as an unbeliever, must remain in naturalism to explain how everything created itself, and you cannot do that through science. You have more faith than any Christian that ever lived, because science does not support a universe creating itself from nothing, nor an eternal universe. The theoretical remains as such without proof.
Thats not really an answer, you just went around in a loop to explain God. Plus what about all the other Gods out there? Thor? Allah? what about all those guys, what proof do you have that they aren't real? And science doesn't say something came from nothing, thats the whole point. But there is more evidence for what science says than anything in religion, you only have your faith, hope that works out for ya.....
Not a "loop" at all. You can't use naturalism (which is all you have) to explain a supernatural being. You are trying to drag God down and make Him subjective to His creation - and that won't work. And as far as the universe coming from nothing - it's what Stephen Hawking, and a vast number of physicists have said. If you desire to start with the singularity, where did all that matter and energy come from? Either it created itself, it has always existed, or it was created.
The first law of thermodynamics takes out the idea it created itself, as matter and energy cannot be created nor destroyed, and the second law takes out idea #2. The universe is winding down, as energy is becoming less and less useful. The universe is heading toward "heat death." So, an eternal universe is out. All other theories (multi-verses, string, oscillating universe) lack one thing...one shred of scientific proof. So, where does that leave ya?
The second law of thermodynamics only explains the phenomenon of irreversibility in nature...and to claim that the universe always existed in one form or another does not imply that the universe as we know it today is reversible.
The most common INTERPRETATION by science as to the beginning of the universe shows that all matter existed in a small area that violently exploded (and is still going) into what we see today. Time will only tell if it stops expanding and shrinks again then explodes etc
Your other comment about how natural science can not be applied to supernatural things is a cop out. First of all, name any supernatural thing that can be proven? So explain to me why I should believe in anything supernatural at all? Things are either real or they are not. Things that are real, science can be applied to. You are forced to make your comment about supernatural things because you know science undermines everything you believe. And that's no fair. You REALLY want to believe it...
I can use science to explain it if the whole creationism theories (which have absolutely no evidence to support it, none) are trying to be taught in school and trying to be used to explain the way our universe works. Your hiding behind the whole supernatural idea because your can't come up with anything.
We have evidence of matter and anti-matter randomly appearing in the middle of the universe for a very small amount of time.
First of all, your claim of "matter and anti-matter randomly appearing" seemingly from nothingness is a falsehood. Both matter and anti-matter need each other to exist. There can not be even a particle of anti-matter without a corresponding particle of matter. So, you are right back to where did the matter come from to begin with? "Ex nihilo, nihil fit" still applies. As does the law of causation and the first law of thermodynamics.
Your assumption that things must be created, or begin at some point, is just that. You think that way because you are human, and thus limited both in your perceptions, and your cognitive abilities. It may very well be that everything in the universe already existed, and always will. You claim this of God, yet think it's odd to see the universe in this way? I find that odd. I think that God exists, but I recognize that it's just as possible are universe is infinite instead, or as well.
There are quite a few theories in existence that deal with that problem. I'm not well versed in any, but I have a vague recollection that one regards the big bang happening every time the universe is "destroyed". Basically just a loop of life and death, much like what we see on Earth. *cue the circle of life song*
buddyboy55 - Can't happen is only correct if you are arguing from your own definitions of what is and is not reality. Shall i continue this argument as a physicist or will you shhh now?
It's not a cop out. You are trying to drag God down and make him subjective to the very natural laws He Himself created. If God was subjective to His creation, He would not "be" God. You, must remain in naturalism and explain how a universe created itself from nothingness, or is etrnal. Both of which, science disproves through the laws of thermodynamics and the causation law. None of which have ever been violated and are foundational to all other scientific laws.
Your argument against Paulenton is flawed, because the first law of thermodynamics says essentially that all matter has always existed. This is exactly the point that I am making. It is the UNIVERSE that is eternal, or maybe not even (we dont know)...not GOD. And it is a cop out--everything we know is natural...you claim that you know something that can not be proven or disproven...and you make a bs excuse that we cant know because its above us? Please, its pathetic.
The second law eliminates the idea the universe is eternal. Physicists and Cosmologists have proven the universe is winding down, heading toward "heat death," where all the energy in the universe will reach a uniform state - a point of uniform energy decay. Even Stephen Hawking said, "...the universe has NOT existed forever. Rather, the universe, and time itself, had a beginning in the Big Bang, about 15 billion years ago."
The second law does no such thing, 1...only that once something happens, it cant suddenly reverse. Second, even if all that we know suddenly came to be, a lack of an explanation is not causality for God. You attribute it to god, because you have no better explanation. But what purpose really, does this god serve? To create everything for no apparent reason and then go away forever? I don't buy it.
Science has not made up its mind on this issue yet, so you play the God card. Weak argument.
The second law is the entropy law - and yes, the universe is indeed heading toward heat death. If the universe were eternal, it would have reached that state by now. Again, if you want to argue with cosmologists, and physicists like Stephen Hawking in regard to that issue, you are quite welcome to. They agree that the universe is NOT eternal. The disparity of heat would tell you that. The universe is degenerating, running down, not evolving upward or eternal. Post the proof of it's eternality.
And around and around in circles we go. I understand the cosmic egg issue...but it is not rational to assume GOD DID IT when there is no proof of it. Scientists have not concluded what, why, how the big bang occurred--and even if they did conclude that God did it, it only goes to show that there once was an entity that apparently had the singular purpose to cause the big bang, and then do nothing at all from there on out. That's called deism. And Ill believe it when I see the proof.
Proof? If you have but the 3 options (The universe created itself, it's eternal, or God created it) And you remove two of them scientifically (The universe creating itself, it's eternal) you are left with the last option simply through science AND logic. Everything else (Oscillating, multi-verses, etc.) Are totally theoretical - ZERO proof. You have more faith in man than any Christian has in God. And that's all you have - "faith." Because you've provided no proof for the first 2 options.
You dont know there is only three options, first of all....you even offered a few theoretical possibilities yourself. See, the thing is, on this particular subject...all we got is theories until something is proved. The big bang was more complicated scientifically than anything we have ever known--so you can't disprove anything about it with modern science. I do not have faith, I have logic and reason. Trust me, science does not bode well for the God argument, so maybe you should reconsider it.
I believe the Big Bang happened - I also believe it was God that did it. Without God, you are stuck with trying to explain something from nothing, or an eternal universe, through naturalism alone. And again, science disproves both of those options. So what have you got left? Anyone can come up with a theory - all you need is a fertile imagination - but until you have one shred of proof, you've got nothing. Science actually works against you here - so welcome to the world of "faith."
@Tinkerbells86 Faith is belief in spite of proof. God is a theory just as the big bang theory is, only most of the things god used to explain have now been proven not to be from any god, so it's a pretty safe bet to say that anything that is claimed to be done by god is probably false too, we just have to wait for science to come up with the answer.
@MattCapulet You are using Theory incorrectly. A theory can be tested in various ways and still provides the same results. What you are trying to say is hypothesis.
Your big problem here is, I actually know science. My forte' is cosmology. If you want to get into the meat of this subject - I'd be very happy to debate you anytime..
The fourth option sounds more logic to me. It was theese 2 giants so big that just a teaspoon(of their world of course) of shit is as big as our universe. they had a farting contest but one of them made a mistake, he let it rip to long and accidently shat himself, thats where the word big bang originated from and all the matter we can see is just a stain on his underpants.
and just because science hasn't come up with a proven theory of the universe doesn't mean your right, you still have to come up with some proof, which you have none.
Thanks for the laugh. My favorite people are 3rd world indigenous people who have not been contaminated by organized religion. No one has bowled them over with proselytization, the ultimate sin. Shoving your beliefs down someone else's throat to make you feel more powerful and righteous.

Tinkerbells86 2 years ago
Your argument against Paulenton is flawed, because the first law of thermodynamics says essentially that all matter has always existed. This is exactly the point that I am making. It is the UNIVERSE that is eternal, or maybe not even (we dont know)...not GOD. And it is a cop out--everything we know is natural...you claim that you know something that can not be proven or disproven...and you make a bs excuse that we cant know because its above us? Please, its pathetic.
ThoughtfulAtheist 2 years ago 4
The second law eliminates the idea the universe is eternal. Physicists and Cosmologists have proven the universe is winding down, heading toward "heat death," where all the energy in the universe will reach a uniform state - a point of uniform energy decay. Even Stephen Hawking said, "...the universe has NOT existed forever. Rather, the universe, and time itself, had a beginning in the Big Bang, about 15 billion years ago."
If you can disprove Hawking, I'd love to see it.
Tinkerbells86 2 years ago
The second law does no such thing, 1...only that once something happens, it cant suddenly reverse. Second, even if all that we know suddenly came to be, a lack of an explanation is not causality for God. You attribute it to god, because you have no better explanation. But what purpose really, does this god serve? To create everything for no apparent reason and then go away forever? I don't buy it.
Science has not made up its mind on this issue yet, so you play the God card. Weak argument.
ThoughtfulAtheist 2 years ago 2
The second law is the entropy law - and yes, the universe is indeed heading toward heat death. If the universe were eternal, it would have reached that state by now. Again, if you want to argue with cosmologists, and physicists like Stephen Hawking in regard to that issue, you are quite welcome to. They agree that the universe is NOT eternal. The disparity of heat would tell you that. The universe is degenerating, running down, not evolving upward or eternal. Post the proof of it's eternality.
Tinkerbells86 2 years ago
And around and around in circles we go. I understand the cosmic egg issue...but it is not rational to assume GOD DID IT when there is no proof of it. Scientists have not concluded what, why, how the big bang occurred--and even if they did conclude that God did it, it only goes to show that there once was an entity that apparently had the singular purpose to cause the big bang, and then do nothing at all from there on out. That's called deism. And Ill believe it when I see the proof.
ThoughtfulAtheist 2 years ago
Tinkerbells86 2 years ago
You dont know there is only three options, first of all....you even offered a few theoretical possibilities yourself. See, the thing is, on this particular subject...all we got is theories until something is proved. The big bang was more complicated scientifically than anything we have ever known--so you can't disprove anything about it with modern science. I do not have faith, I have logic and reason. Trust me, science does not bode well for the God argument, so maybe you should reconsider it.
ThoughtfulAtheist 2 years ago 2
I believe the Big Bang happened - I also believe it was God that did it. Without God, you are stuck with trying to explain something from nothing, or an eternal universe, through naturalism alone. And again, science disproves both of those options. So what have you got left? Anyone can come up with a theory - all you need is a fertile imagination - but until you have one shred of proof, you've got nothing. Science actually works against you here - so welcome to the world of "faith."
Tinkerbells86 2 years ago
@Tinkerbells86 Faith is belief in spite of proof. God is a theory just as the big bang theory is, only most of the things god used to explain have now been proven not to be from any god, so it's a pretty safe bet to say that anything that is claimed to be done by god is probably false too, we just have to wait for science to come up with the answer.
MattCapulet 2 years ago
@MattCapulet You are using Theory incorrectly. A theory can be tested in various ways and still provides the same results. What you are trying to say is hypothesis.
Thanos71185 1 year ago
Your big problem here is, I actually know science. My forte' is cosmology. If you want to get into the meat of this subject - I'd be very happy to debate you anytime..
Tinkerbells86 2 years ago
The fourth option sounds more logic to me. It was theese 2 giants so big that just a teaspoon(of their world of course) of shit is as big as our universe. they had a farting contest but one of them made a mistake, he let it rip to long and accidently shat himself, thats where the word big bang originated from and all the matter we can see is just a stain on his underpants.
Ultramaggy 2 years ago
Actually it is now believed that the universe will reach a cold death, instead of a heat death.
Because of the discovery of Dark matter we can see that the galaxies will spread out away from one another.
New theories :D
HAL9000unit 2 years ago
and just because science hasn't come up with a proven theory of the universe doesn't mean your right, you still have to come up with some proof, which you have none.

Yes,I remember all the bullshit from the
50's. We were like little robots. Everything was like the
"Leave it to Beaver" (Looked like on the surface), routine, boring, stiffeling. Thinking, critical thinking was NOT encouraged. Hard to believe there are many who want to go backward to those times. That's when all the "Under God" shit was snuck into/onto everything.

Wow! They show a small kid and refer to him as the "Smallest Sinner". I never knew christianity considers even newborn kids as sinners. If that is true, then I think christianity is as lunatic and crazy as Islam.

Yup yup, "original sin" doncha' know. The big three Abrahamic cults all subscribe to it.
Of all the vile and evil tenets introduced by the countless religions that have existed, it is, IMHO, the most destructive and depraved.
