Wow ....This really takes me back to my youth. I was born November 1st 1965 but I remember it all so well. I dig rock and roll music and The Mamas And Papas ofcourse. LOL ....
A dj in Detroit-Dave Dixon- grew up with Paul Stukey and helped to write the line "the radio won't play it unless I lay it between the line". Saying that they had to couch their words. Dave was probably the best dj ever in Detroit IMO
@Beanabear122 Here's hoping somehow you come to appreciate your gramma's joy, and maybe celebrate with her. If you do, I promise you that you'll be very glad you did.
When You get right down to it,The Mama's & the Papa's along with Donovan weren't exactly Rock and Roll. (I did like Both) And what did they mean when they said,'when the words don't get in the way'? (when they parodied the M's & P's) Oh, and for the record,I liked Peter,Paul & Mary also. Just having Fun here!! I lay awake nights wondering about such things!!

The imitation was intentional for PPM to sound like M&P, same with the imitation of Donovan, and of course, the Beatles. It was their point to show that imitation was the sincerest form of flattery
My favorite thing about this song is when they talk about censorship. "but if i really say it, the radio wont play it, unless I lay it between the lines," i heard that they said that Puff the magic dragon didnt have any other meaning than the lost of innocence of children, but im not sure if i buy that. I know they have some christian slanted songs and had a lot of children in the audience in performances when they were older. i cant think of another song that they would have had to "edit"
the artist is not going to say they dig the mamas and the papas if they are the mamas and the papas c'mon it does seem reminesent of them, like their trying to copy the sound of the mamas and the papas.
@pendragonshaw No, it really is Peter, Paul and Mary. They were often confused with the Mama's and the Papa's, and they even sing about them in this song.
@pendragonshaw sweet heart...so are so wrong..............................what year were you born darling one.......I was there for it all....born in 53, cut my teeth on Elvis vinyl 45's, saw the Beatles live in SF in 1964, was at the Monterey Pop Festival where Jimi Hendrix set fire to his guitar......etc etc..........this IS Peter Paul and Mary, interestingly primarily a folk group from the earlier 60s who were able to change with the times and in this song pay homage to all the other artists.

I think it's brilliant how the part about Donovan sounds like Donvan's singing/music, and the part about the Beatles sounds like them.

If you listen to the words, it sounds as if the trio really didn't dig rock 'n' roll too much...
Great song and impressions, though.

If I remember, this song criticizes their friends for getting radio airplay, at a time when traditional "folk" music like PP&m wasn't getting played

PP&M did a great satire of '60s pop on this song. Thanks for posting, Boz! I love their impression of famous disc jockey, Murray The K.
