an amazing woman, scholar and composer. she was on the period equivalent of a first name basis with the kings and emperors of the time. a really fascinating life
I first heard this a long time ago when I watched 'A Beautiful Mind', but didn't think too much of it then. but I was certainly astonished when it resurfaced in my college course! Hildegard von Bingen was greatly disabled throughout her life, and the authorites of the church took pity on her and gave her an education, which was strictly against the policy back then of educating commoners (this was during feudal times). a magnificent piece, and one of my favorites in my college course.
@CTSael Did they specify in your college course what Sait Maximillan this peice was reffering to? There are several but im not sure wich one this piece is about.
@CTSael : I'm sorry but I will have to take issue with your assertion that Hildegarde was a commoner. She was a child of noble parents, their tenth child who as an infant was indeed sickly and either partly because of that or because her parents looked for a better preferment, she was tithed to the church and given to the care of Jutta von Sponheim and enclosed at Disibodenberg around 1113CE. The church did educate people, there was no blanket restriction and Jutta educated Hildegarde.
@CTSael ...one other note, perhaps people might get the wrong impression by your comment "...greatly disabled..." she had periods when she was unable to work and had ecstatic visions during those times (perhaps she suffered from cluster headaches or severe migraines which led to periods of incapacitation and one notable occasion, paralysis.) Hildegarde was a marvel, regardless of what historical age you look at. This piece if my favourite of all her works sung by my favourite singer, Emma Kirkby
@perkinw because she had those visions, people during those times believed that she was a spiritualist, a mystic, and many more names along those lines. she was prone to much physical incapacitaton even at a young age, and the people of the church helped to nurture her. this is essentially the same thing I said the first time, but I'm just trying to make my statements more understandable.
@CTSael I don't think a woman who undertook three preaching tours of the Rheinland and as far away as Swabia could be considered "prone to much physical incapacitation".
I once had this cassette. Would love for you to upload all of it! A few years back I couldn't find it anywhere. I heard this on a beautiful May day, wafting through green leaves on a street of venerable old trees. It was the most beautiful music I'd ever heard, in *that moment*. It was my birthday--oddly I can't remember how old I was. Maybe 30. I followed the music- what a gift. I will always associate it music with sun and the clear blue sky and the way light rests on a leaf.
@stevenjackson1958 I agree. I have this CD as well. Another good one is "Vision-The Music of Hildegard von Bingen". A very inspiring piece, as is the rest of the CD. The first time I saw A Beautiful Mind, I instantly recognised Columba aspexit from this album.
I heard this beautiful piece of music in the movie "A Beautiful Mind," and have been wanting to hear it in its entirety. I am so happy to find it here. Thank-you!
Ob dieses Stück, ob "Caritas abundat" oder "O ignis Spiritus Paracliti"... sie sind alle erhaben und voller Zauber, den Zauber längst vergangener Tage und der Ewigkeit Gottes.

What instrument is making the humming sound in the background?
newmondo 1 year ago
the instrument is called a "drone." it is defined as a single two-note chord running continuously.

Thanks!

"drone" is the function of the instrument. It is some sort of hurdy-gurdy.
