Now if you compare the russian army and the american army, you could easily come to the conclusion that USA's army is much better equiped and much larger in size.

I think in short terms 3-7 years Russia won't be challenge America's dominance but in longer terms it definitely can. It has everything she needs for it. Now that Russia is returning to the world stage, competition between the USA, China, and Russia could be a good thing in the fields of science, technology, and military advancements.

Secondly Russia may not allow NATO membership for those countries, and may be willing to use force before that were to happen. Georgia and Ukraine will never be NATO members. In fact NATO should have taken it's cue to disband after the Warsaw Pact dissolved. If the west pushes for NATO membership in these two countries, rest assured, Russia will forge even closer ties with Cuba and Venezuela, and match the offensive weaponry based in these coutries with that which would likely go into Georgia and Ukraine.

The whole idea of nuclear weapons is to create an equilibrium, if two sides or more can remove life from planet earth, nobody wants to hit the button because nobody wins. All sides must share control. Cold war effect not likely due to Russia's allied globilization. Cold War effect requires some degree of isolation. What we don't want is a east/west type cold war.
