The Chief sounds awful close to Earl's older Gibson he recorded with. I heard one played live at Gruhn's in Nashville, and was amazed how close it was to the sound Earl got on his older Gibson.
Yates all the way!! The others sound good, but when he brings out that Yates it has such a deeper tone to my ear!! I hope to get a Yates within a year!!
Sonny, Jim, JD, and dozens more have told me the same thing: the real deal banjos from the 30s could take substantially tighter heads without sounding shrill or overly dry. When I tried out the Yates a year ago, I was moderately impressed with the tone; a little on the dry side but not bad. The set-up was a serious disappointment, though. I don't think YOU have a clue about what prewar banjos can take set-up wise. Yates cannot take a true prewar set up.
Oh, racer. I never said that Ron did not know about prewar tone - I said that the Yates cannot take a real prewar set up. C'mon, we're not talking about some moderate priced retrofit RB-3 or tenor banjo with a five string neck. I am talking about the real deal five strings from the 30s. I have seen and played several of Jim MIlls, banjos and many more, including JDs banjos.
Nice pickin' man! :)

I am also gonna throw my vote with the Chief. I like the yates as well, but the gibson is lacking some magic. Nice banjos for sure!
