A square (or any rectangles that are similar to a square) will always have more area than any other rectangle, this is simple grade 4 math. With widescreen you actually get less screen real estate than standard screens. This is reflected through native resolutions of standard vs. widescreen lcd montiors. Standard ratio lcds will usually have several thousands more pixels.
