Nuclear weapons followed with the Trinity Project, another American first. Dubious, yes, but thankfully as opposed to Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan.

Here'sa note on usage. in the early 90s, Ken Burns produced a TV show called The Civil War, a masterpiece about the second most important event in U.S. history.
A historian said that before the Civil War the usage was "The United State are ..." and after the war it changed to "The United States is ..." This emphasizes the new unity of the country, forged by the fires of war.

There was no real winner of the War of 1812. All it did was make America look like a stable country...so other countries started to respect it more. Nobody won and nobody lost. America & Britian both suffered bad defeats but there was no winner. The treaty? It did nothing. Just brought it back to pre-war settings.

This is how God intended the national anthem to be sung.
The Choir does something interesting with this traditinoal line:
"Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just."
The Choir sings,
"Then conquer we must, with our cause it is just."
Which is much better. Relativism sounds funny in a national anthem, except Key seems to have put it in there.
Another alternative is:
"Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just." That's my favorite
