@fiendin281 Yes they can be random in this arrangement. But the distance between each (the overall density) is carefully chosen. They are simulating a larger telescope (the size of the total array) in respect to resolution, but not light gathering ability. But this means that they can be placed pretty much anywhere along that simulated mirror as long as they are equidistant from each other.
@r0ck3tsm0k3 so as long as they are fairly spread out it will be OK? I still don't see why that would produce better results than having them symmetrical.

question: why didn't they build it symmetrically? it seems like they just put the dishes in random places.
