Jon's voice is breaking up holding notes...his lungs were starting to fail when he recorded this.

When Jon first started out as a youth his voice would break up often. It is not a sign of weakness. This is a brilliant song. I would also say that this song has nothing to do with depression. Not at all.  Just like Aphrodite's Child's songs about sadness have nothing to do with depression. This kind of sadness is a beautiful feeling that connects.
