The thing about Hella is that while they are almost irritatingly chaotic, they actually manage to keep an approachably melodic quality in their music, which is something many of these mathrock/metal bands absolutely fucking suck at.

Just because you can't make sense out of something doesn't mean no one else can. These types of music are similar to rock, free jazz, jazz. Not all music is soul based dumbass. Some music is relaxing, others emote different kind of energy; angry, erratic, some you can't even describe. Not all classical sounds intense like Vivaldi. You just need more exposure to different music. That's how you "train" your ears.
