  • only senior maiko are dancing you can tell because 2 of them are wearing the sakkou hair style which is worn in the last 4-2 weeks of a girls time as a maiko before she becomes a fully fledged geiko but all the other girls are wearing the katsuyama hairstyle which only the last year maiko wear but other wise a beautiful dance

  • by the way.......to the person who posted this video.....Ookini san dosou!

  • Not commenting on the video itself..but the comments here......people need to grow up, seriously...the whole I'm right....you're wrong...and here's why...is High school baby foot stomping. Can't you just enjoy the video? Comment on their skill or lack there of...your opinions are still important......but this..my knowledge is greater then yours.......actually speaks against you......not for you.

  • Geisha weren't prostitutes. The reason people confuse that is because if someone wanted to marry a geisha they would have to pay. so they were "bought" if they were to be married. but never for sex.

  • @NeverMoreGrrrrl True.

But a lot of Asian cultures require the husbands to buy off the wives. (Brother's dating a Hmong girl, she said a good Hmong wife cost around $7,000...that's a lot!)

  • these are senior ranking maiko, yes geisha wear white collars but as a maiko progresses in her training her collar gets whiter, you can tell they are not full fledged geisha yet because 1) the kanzashi is too elaborate 2) they wear furisode style suzohiki 3) they are wearing the darari obi. also people please stop taking your 'facts' from memoirs of a geisha, what arthur golden wrote was FICTION based LOOSELY on mineko iwasaki's life. please dont confuse fact and fiction!!!!

  • beautiful dance ok so these ladies are geishas because their collar is white maiko wears not white collars also they are not sex services so please dont confuse them with oiran, they have long obis because it is formal

  • They're Sr. Maiko. Their Kanzashi is a bit more than a geisha, and their obi's are still long.

  • Geisha dans= The most beutiful dance in the world!

  • very very very nice

    muito muito legal

  • true! maiko and geisha are different and therefore have different dresses. although these maiko are wearing quite dark kimonos, so im a little confused...still, very beautiful ^.^

  • Yes, and their 'collar' is white, whereas a maiko's would be red. Maybe not authentic geisha? Or perhaps this is a Kyoto-geisha/Tokyo-geisha difference.

  • O.O

  • lol some guy in front had his camera phone.

  • I like your kimono very much.

  • dollars in the total five years on a maiko. when those five years has gone the maiko has already paid of her debt. the geisha is more independet then the maiko because she got no debt to the okiya

and i wouldn't give memoirs of geisha to much hope, the book does not contain right information. instead go to immortalgeisha dot com

  • well i wouldn't say that the belong to the okiya, a maiko can quit whenever she wants, but she has to pay her debt to the okasan. a maiko's training last about 5 years it is estimated that the okasan spend 500.000

  • what is the name of this song??/

  • (in the beginning)the one in the middle has the oshiyun hairstyle and the left maiko has some sort of shimada hairstyle and the one on the far right has the new years hairstyle, is this in the pontocho district? the oshiyun hairstyle is native only to pontocho i believe.

  • Can geisha after making enough money [like in the movie] go out on their own? so as to keep all the money they make.

  • Don't use Memoirs of a Geisha for reference when it comes to modern day Geisha . . .

  • but it's true geisha belong to a geisha house and all their money goes to it. just because it embelished in some parts the movie isn't totally false.

  • Yes that part of the movie IS true. The mother of the house AKA "Ocasan" get's all the money while the Geisha is staying at the house & uses it for her life style, clothes, food ect ect ect.

  • im just curious but what parts in the movie were wrong? i watch that movie and i think for somebody who is very uneducated about Geisha, that its a good "reference".

  • actually, the mizuage ceremony had nothing to do with sex. arthur golden (who obviously wasnt a geisha) confused geisha with prostitutes.

  • don't really think he confused them with prositutes casue I remember in the movie how they implied that they weren't. But it was also set in times where at the time the ceremony did have something to do with sex. Just now in modern time it doesn't matter anymore.. ((i looked it up.))

  • my question is, are maiko rich or geisha i mean.

  • very rich but they the money they get for entertainment goes back to thir onasan (or something like that) and for however long she is in the geisha profession she pays her expenses to the onasan. thes are maiko

  • nice move~smooth...

  • Yes, they are maiko.

A geisha does not have the taiko material draping down to her back.

  • > A geisha does not have the taiko material

    > draping down to her back.

I think you mean "obi material". The most common way of tying the obi for women is called taiko-musubi, from taiko (drum). The long knot used by the maiko (you are right indeed, maiko only) is called darari-obi, not taiko. There is a version with a half-long darari called han-dara, used by minarai, apprentices just about to become maiko (shikomi -> minarai -> maiko -> geiko)

  • those aren't geiko yet, they're maiko (aka still in training to become a real geiko).. ^_^;

  • can someone tell me if this is the sakko haistyle?

  • It's not clear enough, but it looks like two girls are wearing sakko, and one girl wearing the New Year's style (I forget the name).
