It must have been a really good experience to live through and document this trip, but I must have to say that it is pretty immoral, unethical, not to mention illegal to publicly display patient charts. I mean, if I were helping a cause such as this, I would show my respect to every patient and not make them any more vulnerable than they already are. Just a thought for how you choose to display your self and you video.
oh gosh! You help the needy because it is in your heart to give to the poorest of the poorest. It is your moral obligation as Christian people that you might be. In Guatemala, we have the highest population of indigenous people. They need assistance, they need help. Just like in another third world country, we have dictators. we've governments that they do not care for their citizens. I'll suggest to learn about our culture. Thank you in advance for your help to the poorest of my Guatemala.
Perhaps you should try and work 12 hour days doing surgeries and being in a series of intense situations in a foreign environment with sub-par working conditions, not to mention lack of air-conditioning. This particular comment is quite immature and is a reflection of your desperation to attack anything you can.
if this is an attack, there must be a war, WISE, is one that perceives what my enemy is.
If this is desperation, where does my lack of hope arise from? if this is immaturity where is my lack of character if in fact the above might have meaningfull answers?
If the missions are fine for helping some people in guatemala? ..............
So, is there a solution? Or are these comments more philosophical than anything else? What should be done? What shouldn't be done? Should we do anything at all?
we stand in I G N O R A N C E, and we become the reflection of the poor, who we try to help, who also stand where we stand unable to reach us because to them we don't exist
as our intent never reveals a solution other the one created in our minds that has told us that we in fact have a purpose as doctors becouse we help poor kids, Isnt the only problem being solved within ourselves?
Is it not selfish? if so, what difference does it make who we heal either poor or rich american or guatemalan, if we are nothing more than a doctor and a patient, where the patient who we heal, heals us. regardless of the country whose problems are unsolvable?
@harly30 Well, the Doctor actually asked the little girl what part of Guatemala she was from, and if you would have taken the time to look at a map instead of precisely timing the moment in which the question occured, you would have learned that Guatemala is the Capital city of Guatemala. Just like Tokyo is the capital city of Japan, hahahaha.........
notice at minute 3:28 When does a poor kid wear an $80 Real Madrid addidas soccer jersey. Notice how the nicely dressed mother perceives the slowness of the nurse and how in her attempt to help the nurse, responds sarcastically by smiling to the pathetic question, from or slow friend, DO YOU SPEAK? DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL? OF COURSE HE DOES, he attends a private school!! I've had enough see
What does it matter what the doctor says? Her sole purpose in being at the clinic in Guatemala is for the well being of her patients. These are questions that demonstrate her curiosity. The medical expertise of the doctors is what is at stake here.
in one month the clinic makes $25,000 in two it's $50,000 , The clinic of course being privately owned most likely by one or two Guatemalan Docs that have declared themselves humanitarian or Pro Peace Corps Fasad ,all becouse of the humanitarian nature of us, Americans. hmmm I don't know, it looks like somebody IS getting something out of something!!! Bye Bye
What other option is there? Should these doctors no longer come to Guatemala? If this is the only option to volunteer under, then perhaps it is possibly the only viable option for the current circumstances.
any fast food restaurant in guatemala costs about Q40 for a meal, and trusts me %95 of people there can get this kind of money so lets say , that we have 5 docs at 8 surgeries per day each at 50 bucks each surgery for a month or two...............
Usually surgery in Guatemala costs about mmm from Q3500 maybe Q6000 which is about $400 to $750, it all depends on the complexity of the procedure of course, these , seem to be the simpler ones.OK now, since people that will be going there are supposedly "poor" the clinic will charge each person oooooh lets put it small mmmmm $50 which is about Q400 (quetzales, guatemala currency)
Lets say that the doctors charged absoulutley nothing ok !volunteer work! like in the middle ages one paid for their sins in exchange of redemption and now their work significe a sense of humanitarian contempt, peace at heart.!!! so then, the clinic which is a house, which means it is privately owned by someone charges for a surgery to pay just for the use of the establishment and supplies.....to be continued
WE must clarify, guatemala does have extremes, BUT GUATEMALAS WEALTHIER CLASS ALONG WITH THE GOVERNMENT MUST HELP THE POOR!!! from what is being seen in this video there was some sort of alliance there, the humanitarian side of the americans and the clinic 2700 patients in a month!!! Lets calculate possible costs!!!
In the city of Guatemala people have a sense of upper lifestyle fashion and are consumists of only top brands, YES TOP BRANDS, wihing their taste of vehicles there is PORSCHE, FERRARI, BMW AND SO ON!!!!!!!!!
Not to mention lifestyle in the middle and upper class, people from the middle class have maids sometimes two or three, there is millions of middle class people all over Guatemala but specially in the city.
It is of the utmost importance to mention the reality of this country, regarding what one of the doctors mentioned. 2nd in poverty following Haiti is really a bad perception of the incredible diversity of wealth. This country has Very rich people, lots of them, 3 of the wealthiest families in the world reside in Guatemala.
It is my absolute pleasure. These kids are in desparate need of help, and to show these doctors helping on a volunteer basis was the least I could do :)

Education is the solution in guatemala, and the elite should no longer be the elite.
