  • how many cars long?

  • o.O

  • Can a us engineer answer a norwegian engineer this, can a dpu locomotive apply brakes or refill the main brakeline (to release brakes)? Here the whole brakeline must be filled from the frontmost loco where the driver sits.

  • Oh my holy God, this IS train! I wont be there if it derails... How are the locos controlled? Radio connection?

  • @BrouwerHungary Yes, they were controlled via a wireless connection.

  • maybeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, there will be longer trains in the future veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery nice,i also tried this in my ho scale until now,its still running every now and then..........

  • This is the longest train run by the UP? How many cars?

  • mmm I can imagine the anger of the car drivers... good looooooooooooooooooooong train IMPOSSIBLE to see such things here....

  • Oh yeah and the stopping was supposedly tested and was "within acceptable parameters" to me that means it stopped. I would say it could stop rather quickly, most containers headed west are empties or light loads returning to the port and with locos every 99 cars or so the brakes would apply much faster than your average 110 car coal train with just head end power. It should stop just like a 50 car train since the brakes set in both directions from all locos.

  • 295 cars and 9 locos all GE ES44AC's or as UP calls them C45ACCTE meaning GE, 4400hp ac traction motors, controlled tractive effort programming. I dont think UP will ever be able to run this size train on a regular schedule from what I have heard it took some serious talks to get it run once, they worded it as an experiment in train handling with multiple sets of unmanned DPU's to test the ablilities of the systems. awful cool to see though.

  • @502nuts BNSF and UP are running some big trains, but I haven't seen any more of this size. All in all though, these big trains are no longer that unusual.

  • being the tool i am, i counted about 285 cars!

    plus or minus a few

  • @roweman2 well you counted 285, 592nuts counted 295, I counted 292, I think that this is an imposible thing to count, you just can't keep your eyes focused!

  • Nobody canna cross it!

  • 403 cars and engines give or take a few.

  • looks like one of those moster 30,000 ft trains

  • Now the real question is.. how long would it take this steel beast to come to a stop? Anyone feel free to PM me their guess :)

  • @Pendragon1989, not as long as one might think. When you apply the brakes they start applying from all the locomotives. And since there are 9 locomotives throughout the train the air sets rather quickly.

  • @Pendragon1989 Need a little more info to answer your question. How fast was the train going when the brakes were applied? Downhill or uphill? How fast did the engineer want to stop? In other words...are you asking about an emergency application of brakes or normal stopping distance? Do we assume dry weather as in this photo? Once those questions are answered it's possible to make an educated estimate.

  • waw

  • The dude waiting in the car at the crossing is like...I'VE GOTTA PISS!!!!!!!

  • Anyone who are having insomnia can watch this video. Anyway,it's a cool video...

  • omg. what weigt? sorry for my english. im russian locomotive driver

  • I counted 396 cars, hot damn! After staring at those cars passing by for so long my monitor looked like it was waving up and down like in one of those optical illusions. BRB, gotta get cataract surgery.

  • how many coach are there ?

  • @argoanggrek1 around 300. The usually put 100 cars between two engines

  • @ dylan1094 if it's Fucking stupid and pointless then why are you watching trains then?! Dumbass!!!!!!

  • Trains are fucking stupid and pointless!

  • @dylan1094 Especially when 1000 trucks clog the highway.

  • @dylan1094 Good luck carrying that by air.

  • @dylan1094 sort of like your post

  • they are the proper way of moving things around just think of meating 1000 trucks on the highway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like this. And in addition to having displaced locomotives pulling/pushing the train while in motion, it also helps coming to rest. Controlled consistent action.

  • @buffaloditka Not to mention breaking the train up before they bring it into town.

  • 403 incl. engines

  • Very nice!

  • @FK347 thanks!

  • That size of train would be impossible in Canada.

  • @admydragon Why? I guarantee Vancouver could handle it at the port. spent enough time there to know

  • @admydragon Sure they could assemble it, our signal blocks just aren't long enough... Unless you run your train in two signal blocks at once continuously...

  • 502 CONTAINERS

  • I counted 306 or 307

  • I am pretty sure the video is "spliced" after 100 cars. I have Never seen additional engines in the MIDDLE of a train. Lame guys, Lame.

  • @msharmsen Maybe you have never seen locomotives in the MIDDLE of a train...but then again you did not see this train. Or many others that operate with this type of distributed power.

Just because you have not seen it does not mean that it does not happen. And it does.

This train and several others similar to it have been handled via BNSF and UP and most/all of them had power in the middle of the consist.

  • @msharmsen

The locomotives in the middle and back are distributive power units. With current technology, locos not attached to the first engine can now be controlled by the conductor at the front of the train by use of computers.

The more locomotives you put at the front of a long train, the more strain there is on the couplers and the greater the risk of breaking the train apart. By distributing them semi-equally throughout the train, there is a less likely chance of the train tearing apart.

  • @alladinmoua true to some extent although some of these trains are not all that heavy. However, another advantage of mid consist power is that they can broken up quickly. Some of these big trains are not brought all the way in to the port in this length. The trains are broken up out in the desert based on the position of the mid consist units.

  • @Boss302fan Thanks for the reply. I wanted to write more in the last comment but I couldn't because of the character restriction. Also, since I was explaining the concept of the DPUs to a non-railfan, I felt that I had to simplify it to the best of my capability in order not to confuse him/her.

In my reply to msharmsen's comment, I decided to focus on how DPUs reduce drawbar stress on the cars of a train because I'm a HUGE Southern Pacific fan and I loved their use of helpers in the mountains.

  • @alladinmoua You summarized it quite well. A train is only as strong as the strength of the drawbar pulling the most train weight. I've seen many instances when drawbars are just simply pulled out of the car. Normally this is do to "train handling" and not overall train weight.

I never worked in the mountain district on UP (SP) but I've talked with many who have. Amazing terrain.

    Have a good one.

  • @alladinmoua The locomotive engineer controls the train, not the conductor

  • @522549

    Sorry about that.

  • @THR33STEP I counted 314(not counting the locomotives), and now my eyes are messed up. Pretty sure if they had one of their Big Boys still operational they could have had it in the middle replacing the four diesels, or at the front replacing all but one diesels. I've heard that one Big Boy could pull a loaded five and a half mile long train on level ground.

  • haha nice! . . good thing it wasnt traveling at 10MPH

  • I count 616 containers

  • I would hate to be the conductor who walks the train if it has a kicker.

  • This is the coolest video I have ever seen.

  • @glockzr1 Thanks!

  • boy i hope no driver had to go to the bathroom or was late for work waiting for this train

  • @MrZkr123 only 5 mins.

  • I live right in back of it it thosent let me sleep

  • @Victorkillslosangele I hear you. I don't want to live near the RR tracks even I love trains. :)

  • going with the average 60' per freight car, the train is 3.4 miles long.

  • @100mpgus That is a bad average for this type of freight car

  • Yip large freight train that's for sure probably full of Doughnuts, Burgers and Bullshit for all those FAT ASS YANKS

  • @soulbrother61 Nicest part about being a Yank is that we stopped caring about what the self-important citizens of the UK think of us around 250 years ago. Now true I have many friends in the UK. And true my dad did spend a great deal of his life in the UK protecting you guys from your European neighbors. And damn you guys brew good beer and make good music. But this whole 'better than the rest of the world' attitude should be out of your system by now.

  • @Boss302fan hey brother chill..it's good humour and not directed at anybody, it's just when you think of America you think, fat ass cop doughnuts and hotdogs, hey who else would order a Double decker triple cheeseburger, all the trimmings, a mega bucket of fries and a DIET COKE, as for the war it was nearly over by the time the "great" u.s.a got here..anyway i enjoyed the clip my freind...sure is a long train

  • @soulbrother61 That's another thing about the UK I love. You guys can laugh. You need to do that to make life fun. Stereotypes can get you in trouble though. Americans and Canadians view those from England as stuck up pompous judgemental assholes. :> But when you travel you realize we're all people. Hang on...excuse me. Had to take a bite of a doughnut. My dad spent a year and a half flying out of the UK...so almost over is relative. Take care man. Buy you a pint next September

  • @Boss302fan So you yanks view the English as stuck up pompous assholes do you, good job i'm Scottish then eh!, anyway you must admit that you yanks just love blowing your own trumpets always to the extreme biggest houses, biggest cars, tallest buildings, biggest steaks, so why when it comes to biggest guts and fattest asses should you complain? hey i don't want an arguement mate it was just an off the cuff comment that seems to have offended you...just go easy on the mayo that should do it

  • @soulbrother61 actually I'm about as unoffended as it comes. One of the nice things about being a "yank" is that we usually do not give a shit what people think about us. (Sometimes that is not such a good thing). As far as mayo is concerned...I'll pass. But a good beer with fish and chips. I'm in! LOL. And as I said, I'm back in the UK next year. That includes about 6 days in Scottland. Love the place.

    Cheers.

  • @Boss302fan yeah well be sure to visit rabbie burns country it's nice up here(ayrshire) as is the highlands that is glencoe, fort william. oban, inverness nice up that way....hey look me up if your in Ayrshire, i'll buy you a beer

  • @soulbrother61 I'll never forget when a British WWII veteran told me what the people of Great Britain thought of Americans, "Over paid, over sexed and over here!"

So the Americans countered with this about you Brits, "under paid, under sexed and under Eisenhower!"

  • @soulbrother61 So you claim you're a Scot? Your national dish is haggis, no wonder you're such a douche!

  • @SatchmoSings SHUT IT FATSO, just you stick to yir burgers and fries LARD ASS

  • @soulbrother61 By the time the "great" USA got here, the Axis was still winning the war for another 8 months so I don't get where you say the war was nearly over; your Mr. Churchill (and after June 21, 1941 the same goes for Stalin and world-wide Communism) was doing all it good to get the US INTO the war and our Pres. Roosevelt did everything he could to help the UK before the bombing of Pearl Harbor; the way you're talking maybe that was a big mistake.

    Fuck you.

  • je zal maar staan te wachten voor de slagbomen

  • at 1:30 the camera was shaking omg

  • @hwei87 Yea, my camera setting was not so good. I should have put my camera on the ground instead.

  • @singwith Well, I have to give you a lot of credit for holding the camera as still as you did for as long as you did since this train is so long.

  • @SatchmoSings I cheated. I used the tripod. :P

  • @singwith It's a great clip either way; thank you.

  • All this is saving millions on gas!!! 1 truck carrying 1, and 9 engines carring OVER 600!!!!

  • I would be one pissed guy at that damn train crossing...

  • HOLY COW!! O_O

    g

  • HOLY COW!! O_O

  • good length

  • holy cow that must take forever to stop. My grandfather used to work on the Ontario Northland Railroad and he said their coal trains would take 30 miles to stop.

  • @ThickMcRunFast37 Uh...your grandfather either lied to you or you did not hear him right. A 15k ton train on the Ontario Northland (or any railroad) is going to take about a mile to a mile and a quarter to stop if it were going at a fairly high rate of speed.

  • @Boss302fan hmm, I probably misheard him but I'm quite positive that it was much longer than a mile. I'll have to ask him the next time I see him.

  • @ThickMcRunFast37 OH, it could be over a mile. A 60mph 16000 ton train moving downhill can easily take a mile to stop. But 30 miles? No. He is either a great story teller or never ran a train in his life! :> Great railroad though. Good people.

  • @Boss302fan this train is THREE 3 MILES LONG

  • @dergrossen Yes it is. What's your point?

  • @Boss302fan I work on the railway in scotland speed and principles much the same, stopping distance depends on the speed , weight and gradient but i would estimate this at 1 and a half to 2 mile on a 0 gradient considering the lenght , if it were on a steep downward gradient then your in trouble

  • @soulbrother61 I just spent 3 weeks in Scotland. Love the passenger service. In particular if beer is involved. You are over-estimating the stopping distance on this train. But not by a great deal.

Heading back over your way next fall. Can't wait.

  • I counted 295 well cars.... Do you think the engineers brag about who's train is bigger? lol

  • holy crap!!! nice video!!

  • ... Wow... I don't know how they could be cutting jobs by running 1 test train that, to say the least, is impractical...not to say they aren't trying to cut jobs in other ways...

How would they run one in the opposite direction unless they went to double main track everywhere?... There aren't any sidings long enough for trains this long to meet to my knowledge.

  • @masterchiefgtx The train wasn't impractical and BNSF in particular is running multiple "supertrains" a week. This isn't a one time thing although this was definitely an 'exception'. There are definitely 'locations' where you can run in opposite directions (but we're not doing so). And of course these trains are run to attempt to reduce costs and keep trucks off of the highway. And if that means crew reductions or power consolidation that's the way it has to be

  • @Boss302fan Once again, I'm not aware of any 19,000 foot sidings for trains like this to meet... The longest siding in the 200 mile scretch I run on is only 11,000 feet.... After this train got West of Fort Worth there is no more double main track for this train to meet other trains of this length until it gets to El Paso...

  • @masterchiefgtx I was referring to the entire run to Long Beach...not a stretch between FTW and ELP.

  • For some reason I doubt this train went in the hole too many times...

  • god dang.. 621 containers i belive.. ahah

  • @arlingtontrains7 yea, something like 621 trucks. lol

  • I counted 293 not including the engines.

  • Just imagine the Level Crossings, 4 minutes waiting for that thing to go by

  • That is a MONSTER !! This Iron Leviathan navigating California with all it's prohibitive curvature and gradient was a sight to see. Great Post !!! Great Catch !!! How often do see something like this !!! What was the this ? A transfer move to a nearby L.A. Port?

  • I got tired of counting. Thats Amazing!

  • Cutting jobs? They can run a train right now with no driver on board. Union rules prevent this though. I do not believe they can stop them from adding trains togeather yet. It would be a bitch to stop if some poor schmo races the train.

  • @idarusskie Freights in North America are not currently equipped for "driverless" operation. It would take a massive investment and union or no union it's not going to happen for decades except in very specialized circumstances.

There is no 'they' who can stop "them" from adding trains together. I'm not even sure what you're talking about here. These long BNSF and UP trains are just that...long trains.

  • *stuck at crossing*

  • Where are all the GE haters? I didn't see any of the the tired old posts about GE vs EMD, EMD vs GE, etc. This was an all GE-powered (GEVO to be exact) monster train. I guess GE was up to the task and not "GE junk" like is posted so often. BTW, my favorite locos are EMD, so I'm definitely not biased. In any case, a very impressive train. Also,Quebec, Northshore & Labrador runs some of the longest and heaviest trains on the planet (along with BHP and Chemin de Fer Cartier). Awesome stuff, thanks.

  • awsome

  • @SuperTrainkid Thanks!

  • my god, that beats the biggest train i've seen by far! cool catch!

  • @themattrat1995 Thanks!

  • @singwith Thanks!

  • Holy s- -t, thats one long train, railroad has just gotta be up there among the greenest ways to move freight around. Wonder how long it takes to stop!!!!

  • I would love to get my hands on the throttle of this train xD Only if CSX had intermodals this long!

  • it had 301 trolleys in total. guess the car driver waiting was kinda pissed. lol.

  • tres belle video.

  • singwith--

Where in California is Montbello located?

  • @EricEbac22 Montebello is 20 to 30 mins east of Los Angeles.

  • Ive been reading all these disagreements about who has the longest trains when the argument can be ended like this: As far as your general freight that hauls consumer goods go,then Union Pacific and other US railroads have the advantage. If we go into iron ore, which is a specialty haul, then yes Brazil and Australia has the advantage as that takes up a significant proportion of their rail freight hauls because that is a major export out of those countries.

  • This makes a pretty good excuse why you was late for work if you get caught at the crossing.

  • awesome vid

  • Greedy corp trying to see if they can cut jobs. Next only one man in the cab then no engineer. This was 3 trains put together.

  • @MOJONIXION Greedy corp trying to keep traffic on the rails and off the highways where incredibly competitive truckers are trying desparately to win it back. It is the railroad's job to lower freight rates billed to customers in order to maintain traffic levels. If that means longer trains and that is what it takes to maintain the business that is what they will do. I suppose the greedy managers could have just given up and let the trucks go over the highway.

  • @Boss302fan rail is better than inefficient trucking. It saves not only the company money but the consumer. Get you shit straight. There are far more fatalities caused by semi trucks and bad drivers than there are related to locomotive accidents.

  • @tehatemachine I am not sure what I wrote that you are disagreeing with. I've railroaded over 30 eyars and I damn well know both how trucks and rails work and compete against each other. No where in my post did I say anything against longer trains, and as I work in the port of LA I'm actually handling them on a daily basis. I am also one of the "greedy managers". I am all for long haul rail and short haul truck.

  • @MOJONIXION well, its better than 500 trucks put together!

  • That was super cool! Do you know what yard did they used to assemble that monster?

  • Not one boxcar, just flatcars with boxes

  • Diesel power!

  • Wow!!! What a train!! I think that was when they did that test to see if they can pull long trains like the one you got.

  • It's not THAT long.

  • Endless Wurm......

  • now i see how trains change the world

  • Wow! It's too fucking long! gosh

  • arent there 10 locomotives?

  • 295 cars with 9 engines!

  • better than porn

  • I counted 296 cars 9 locomotives.

  • Almost as long as the train in uncharted 2 lol :P

  • wat to many mexicans in those containers

  • Sorry I'm late for work boss, I had to wait for a train to drive past me...

  • TTTRRRAAAAAIINNSSSS!!!!WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  • imagine the all the traffic this caused xD

  • How can someone click on a "longest train video link" and then dislike it?

It's not like you expected to see anything different ? lol

  • I would hate to be stuck at the crossing when this flys by

  • 303 cars...

  • How annoyed would you be if you were waiting at the crossing huh?

  • I counted 305 units

    Correct?

    Incorrect?

  • must of sucked if you were trying to cross.

  • 295 train cars and 8 locomotives.

  • I bet that guy in the suv at the end was annoyed as hell having to wait for the mother of all trains to lumber on by

  • wtv my dick is just as long

  • @AchelGrape someone said it already. :P

  • fun facts: i counted 297 carts, and if you stare really closely for 2-3 mins then pause the video, the carts are moving backwards lol*

  • woooooooooo000ooot???

haha nice train....did anyone count the container?

  • Jedzie Chiński badziew do Polski

  • I'm SO happy to see a train video on the YouTube trends!! :D

  • @steriogram007 Thanks. now I know that's why I get more comments on this video.

  • i started watching this, went to pee, came back and it was still going.

  • how long for stop it?

  • 12 people were at the rail crossing when this happened

  • First we had long cat, now, we have long train.

  • so how long is this? lol

  • Absolutely loved it! That is plenty of rumble and roar for me! I am just getting into filming trains, check out my videos.

  • Thumbs up if you only watched the first 10 seconds and the last 10 seconds...

  • Train= almost as long as my dick

  • that shit is UNSTOPPABLE

  • how many train cars are there?

  • rofl imagine someone at the crossing being late for work and then this happens? they'd be like "NO F%%%ING WAY!" XD

  • OMG, its end at 4:18 of the train

  • and then they found out they were going the wrong way

  • 4:26 That driver must be pissed off LOL!!
