I like them both, but I prefer Whitney. Whitney is what I am happy to call a vocalist, because she has a strong powerful voice that wow's you. Mariah to me is more of an average r&b star with a lovely whistle, I don't really hear much vocal talent from her and it's the choir that seem to make her song good, not her voice as far as I'm concerned... I'm sure Mariah is amazing, but she's not really my taste.

IDK, they are both great. It's not at all the question about ability. What we really talk here is all about our taste and preference. If u love the way Whitney sings, u might find the way Mariah belts strange coz Mariah usually hits high notes more than sustaining them. IMO, Whitney has fantastic mid-belts, unique vibrato and legendary headvoice. Mariah has versatility in her voice amazingly clolourised w/ melisma, top&bottom notes, and whistle. They belong to the vocal trinity.
Whitney sounds far better than Mariah and Mariah, for someone who is supposed to have all this vocal talent, doesn't sound any better than your average R&B singer (however, she does have a fabulous whistle note, which I don't think Whitney has ever conquered, so well done Mariah, but it's unfortunate that there's far better whistle singers out there!)

Timing refers to the rhythm, where you sing in the beat, how you deliver rhythmic nuances, where you create and resolve in the beat. MC does this better than Whitney. Of course you need an ear to understand and feel rhythm, but a musical ear encompasses more than timing.
Whitney has a bigger column of sound and carries it to her top, her voice is more connected, she doesn't drops the breath support. Of course I'm talking about prime Nippy here lol.

I would say that singers that have a whitney's type of voice and singing styles are quite common especially among blacks. She has the typical power and 'heavy' sound to her voice. There are singer who just sounded like her, try search for 'Wendy Moten' here on YT. I like them both, but I prefer Whitney. Whitney is what I am happy to call a vocalist, because she has a strong powerful voice that wow's you. Mariah to me is more of an average r&b star with a lovely whistle, I don't really hear much vocal talent from her and it's the choir that seem to make her song good, not her voice as far as I'm concerned... I'm sure Mariah is amazing, but she's not really my taste.
Whitney's voice just seems to have so much more power and clarity when she sings.

Anyways, anyone born in the 80s would be aware of the rivalry between Mariah's voice (especially from 90-97), Whitney's (notably 85-late 90s perhaps), and Celine (who the hell knows and cares). Mariah has a range like no other (literally), she can go really deep, and really high (ie. Vision of Love, You're So Cold, Emotions, I've Been Thinking About You, to name A FEW) and in some areas

IDK, they are both great. It's not at all the question about ability. What we really talk here is all about our taste and preference. If u love the way Whitney sings, u might find the way Mariah belts strange coz Mariah usually hits high notes more than sustaining them. IMO, Whitney has fantastic mid-belts, unique vibrato and legendary headvoice. Mariah has versatility in her voice amazingly clolourised w/ melisma, top&bottom notes, and whistle. One last important thing I forgot to mention. Regarding album sales and success. Success in the music industry is not fully based on singing ability. Britney Spears, Madonna, and Janet Jackson are just a few of many who weren't the greatest singers in the world but done damage on the billboard charts and are very successful at selling albums! It's about looks, race and etc not just singing! Also if WH released as many albums as MC has I have no doubt that she would have outsold the mixed breed!

Timing refers to the rhythm, where you sing in the beat, how you deliver rhythmic nuances, where you create and resolve in the beat. MC does this better than Whitney. Of course you need an ear to understand and feel rhythm, but a musical ear encompasses more than timing.
Whitney has a bigger column of sound and carries it to her top, her voice is more connected, she doesn't drops the breath support. Of course I'm talking about prime Nippy here lol.

There are singer who just sounded like her, try search for 'Wendy Moten' here on YT. Whitney's performance is truly live. Mariah is singing over a track with a loud choir in the background to cover up the imperfect pitches and notes. Listen carefully to Mariah's performance particularly when she pulls her head away from the mic; notice the volume does not change, hence a track is playing. Each time Whitney pulls the mic away, the volume changes. That is how it works when you are singing live. Whitney does not cheat, Mariah does and have been her entire career.

@rjcooljr I firmly disagree there buddy. Mariah "has not cheated her entire career". If i recall rite, Whitney's was on crack half of hers while Mariah was still hard at work. Besides, some PA system work differently than others. I've sung on some mics that pick me up better the farther away i become. So you're statement is wrong.

whitneys voice is much better both are the too greatest ,but i have to give it to whitney. through all the ranges of any song her voice stays consistent without strain but mariah on the beginning of all her songs when it doesn't call for her to hit the high point her voice is mumbled and uncontrolled until its time to hit the hight versus thats when she shines and even then its kinda of uncontrolled.
