Bettie Davis was discusted by having to act with one she thought was just an unskilled upstart rascal n not a real actor. That slap she gave him - when you see the film you'll see the look of shock on EF's face - that SLAP was real. She dissspized him. But she came to appreciate him as an actor. @salinagrrrl69 I'm almost finishing reading Errol flynn's autobiography and according to Errol she did hit him full force - but only in rehearsal - he was so furious at this assault that he warned her if she did it for the actual movie take she would regret it,

He goes on to narrate that she held back in the finished movie take and skillfully missed him while making it look like she did.

Best book I ever read was the Charles Higham biography...Errol Flynn: The Untold Story.......I think I ended up buying 3 copies...I kept loaning them out & eventually I'd have to replace them. It was such an exciting read. Every man wanted to be him & every woman wanted him........The guy packed 10 lifetimes into 50 years.

Higham is a Bastard of the highest order and he was the one who they were trying to sue. About the only true thing in his book is the name "Errol Flynn".

If you want a decent biography, read one by Thomas McNulty or Earl Conrad (the latter was Errol's ghost writer for "My Wicked, Wicked Ways").

Or read the three books that Errol himself wrote.

Back in th Summer of 1980 I took my Daughter to NYC's Delacourt Theatre in Central Park to see Gilbert & Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" and just as th play opened - swinging down through th air from a mast high aloft came th 'Pirate King' in all his pencil moustachioed panache as played by a young Kevin Kline...I would have sworn it was my childhoodn fave ~ Errol Flynn! At that point & time in his career Kline may well have given a worthy representation of th swashbuckling Flynn but alas...

@sd1v8 there are two certain authors who make these allegations, which have since been proved to be untrue. Errol's daughters have tried to sue the first one but there is no law against defamation of the deceased, which is why they get away with writing lies about dead people to sell books :(

Errol Flynn does not need lies written about him, his life was interesting enough as it is.

@sd1v8 This is B.S.- he was never any kind of spy. This theory comes from the trashy Charles Higham book of 1980 about Flynn. It has been proven false many times since then. Flynn's political views were actually rather liberal. He was a friend and admirer of Franklin Roosevelt, and did his best to enlist in the U.S. military during WWII (he had become a U.S. citizen). He gave generously of his time to the USO, and had many parties for visiting servicemen. Don't believe all this Higham garbage.

Great five minute retrospective. As a sidenote, I am looking forward to the next Robin Hood movie with great trepidation. Another Aussie, without the looks, charm, humour and even, tights, of Errol Flynn. Lots of re-makes, but only one Flynn and Warner's of the 30's-40's.

I love ALL of his movies (Edge of Darkness), and especially like reading about him as his real life was as exciting as his movies - leaving England for the US because some angry husbands wanted to kill him, etc. There will probably NEVER even be an actor who can do a biographical movie of him because he was so cool. The REAL "Tasmanian Devil," Errol Flynn! :)
