Michael Phillips, the worst movie critic ever? Ha, good one. Though, his Chicago Tribune youtbe reviews aren't that good, he writes excellent reviews and was great on At the Movies. I'm sorry you didn't get the film and that this was different than your average mediocre Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay film.
This movie is a mirror reflection of Godzilla and Japan's fear of the atomic weapon. So it's more of a culture refrence than just 'crass' when it mimics the twin towers collapsing.
Also, the creature's origin is explained at the end of the movie, but it's easy to miss.
This review is a bit misleading, there are very emotional (and meaningful) scenes in the movie, so I would not say it lacks character developement.
This was, hands down, the best movie I've seen in a very long time. I was totally engrossed in the plot and felt as if I was a part of the action from the opening, something I haven't seen done in a movie for years. I only wish I saw this in theaters :(
Not totally sure about the rating I guess it's ok. I was so happy we didn't find out how the monster came to be since a bunch of random people probably wouldn't have that kind of info. This film is unique and a brand new take on monster movies and filming in general. I gotta say though, that camera they bring around is amazing. It never breaks, it has night vision, it's gotta be Japanese or something. Oh and I think u kinda gave away the ending there.
just 3 stars ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
The fact that movies like this will recieve more attention from most of the public over great movies like "There Will Be Blood", "Michael Clayton", "No Country For Old Men", "Sweeny Todd" and a few other great movies that are out now is sad.
We don't need another one of these blockbuster, hocus pocus, boom bang movies. There will be no shortage of those in 08 for sure.
Yeah, I sort of agree with you but sweeney todd really wasn't that great even though it had great actors and a great director it's just a bit awkward to see johnny depp singing adn slaving at the same time and it wasn't as visually stunning as it could have been so yeah. But otherwise I agree with you, I hate shaky camera.
I am 50 years of age and I bought into the hype and went on the opening day to see the movie. I enjoyed it but sincerely hope this type of filming does not become a trend. I counted no less than half a dozen people with their hand over their eyes to avoid becoming sick from the non-stop motion of the camara. That aside, it was a great ride. Kudos to Abrams.
I think the camera work was the whole point of the movie. A first person view of the confusion, chaos, suspense, shakiness, and totally-wanna-vomitness that is the giant monster attack on New York.

The worst part about this movie was the characters. But it was an interesting concept that was executed fairly well.

Blair Witch had some qualities. Cloverfield was just stupid, corny and uninteresting.

Word of mouth will kill this movie just like it over-hyped it.
It could have been good, camera work ruined it.

I think the camera work saved it.
