"But he'd be appalled by the morality and small mindedness of Objectivism."
And I, in turn, am appalled by his approach to knowledge acquisition, among other intellectual issues. But that doesn't mean he never said anything brilliant.
Spazz, he fancied himself a scientist, and the way he studied light was by subjectively studying his visual system. He hated Newton because of his scientific approach. Goethe called experimentation a process of prying information out of Nature using levers and screws (an obvious reference to torture instruments).
Yes, he had an empathic and participatory / cooperative theory of science. I was reading some of his philosophy of science earlier tonight in fact. I think it's rather revolutionary scientific paradigm which is more necessary now than ever.
"One who is content just to experience life and act accordingly has all the truth he needs. This is the wisdom of the growing child."
"You really only know when you know little; doubt grows with knowledge."
"In everyday life we use language in a provisional way because we are discussing only superficial relations. As soon as we speak of deeper relationships, there arises suddenly another language: that of the poetic."
"Man cannot well go on existing on his own and this is why he likes to join a party, because this is where he finds, if not tranquility, at least composure and security."
He proposes great expectations, I wish I could live up to these.

Goethe was an amazing individual. But he'd be appalled by the morality and small mindedness of Objectivism.

Indeed, even Mao has some wise words. Personally, Goethe is my hero. I don't know his philosophy of knowledge acquisition but I'm curious about it.
