  • if he had classes i wuld totally go :/

  • Solidarity

  • "If he stays behind, I will too." How many American or British or Canadian kids do you think would say that in this situation?

  • I can't help wondering if Kanamori-sensei decided to bring the hammer down at that point, just to see how the class would respond. Whether they'd come to their classmate's defense or let get left out. Either way, he certainly seems to be proud of the response. I think this definitely shoots down the stereotypical view of unswerving deference to the teacher in a Japanese classroom.

  • It's sad how we devalue what we have to worship something we see. I for one had lots of great teachers and if you didn't sorry you went to such a crappy school. I love this guy BUT!!! he's not the only one of his kind. Sorry if this upsets anyone that's not my goal.. Just don't forget about all the good teacher you had growing up. If you didn't have any like a said sorry you went to such a crappy school...OR maybe you were just a bad student???

  • I wish he was my teacher :(

  • this guy should write a book..

  • @shazzah199708 Actually he has written lots of books... but unfortunately they are available only in Japanese.

  • Oh god. This lesson was so essential. The power to stand up to authority. This is a lesson so many people do not understand. This was truly a beautiful moment. I have faith in humanity.

  • Damn, this one is the worse one yet. T_T

  • These kids are so beast

This is true maturity. This is true teaching. He's not just giving these kids knowledge, he's raising them, like a true teacher should. Mr. Kanamori is a legend.

  • When the one boy says if yuto stays behind then he will too... tears... so beautiful.

  • I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND WHEN WE GET TO START BEING HAPPY :(

  • @rushy4321 They learn to deal with their problems head on, rather than bottling them up.

  • @rushy4321 There is no true happiness, only the pursuit of.

  • This is exactly why japan beats america hands down when it comes to things like this.

  • @Mulletboi86 Stop trying to compare everything to America, faggot.

  • @NeoTranshuman You're right, I should stop, sorry if I offended you.

  • This is the way they should teach in North America. These kids learn to be happy, speak up for themselves, which are very valuable life skills. The teacher even praised the one kid for speaking up and going against authority in a respectful way.

  • Yo is one BAMF!!!

But seriously, holy crap these kids are awesome, Kasuki, (not sure if im spelling it right at all lol) Kasuki who said he would stay too! i'm like daaaaaayuuum thats gutsy man. we need this teacher over here too.

  • This is what consensus-based democracy looks like.

  • @theindependentreview Unfortunately, so was lynching of Witches and Minorities back when we weren't educated enough about culture and negative drug effects.

  • I wish we did stuff in school. No life experience, your just expected to memorize the notes not necessarily learn them.

  • If anyone has any other documentaries like this one, I'd love it if you let me know. I plan teach after college.

  • Yuto is lucky to have such great friends. And such an amazing teacher!

  • Omg, I love this man. I would pay to take his class. He doesn't miss a (heart) beat, and neither do his students.

  • Why can't all teachers be like this?

  • wow, i like this guy. he's teaching such important lessons to kids at such a young age. to get children this young to act the way they do is amazing. never in america have i seen anything like this. props to you japan.

  • he's helping children grow into these wonderful, compassionate people. this is amazing.

  • Have YOU ever seen a 10 year old boy standing up for his best friend like that? It's so admirable I have tears in my eyes. That's what friendship really is about!

  • "The Raft was our project not teacher's. It's our project, so we should decide. So if it's all right of us, he shouldn't have to stay behind". -- It's so brave of them to say like that just for to save their friend .. Sweat ...

  • Our country is just so... crap.

  • the teacher looks like a saru

  • can you imagine this in UK? us teachers will think our power is diminishing and silence everyone else in the class like a CANNON BALL! this teacher was SILENT for more than 3 mins listening and not letting his PRIDE takeover! SUPER!!!

  • Saying Kanazawa is northwest of Tokyo is like saying London is northwest of Paris. It's true, but it's so far that it's meaningless.

  • Look at the real camaraderie... not held together by a name but by the bond of friendship. This is so rare...

when the one kid stands up and says if he stays behind so do I.

....this teacher is smiling inside I know he is

  • They got to handle nails and Hammer and we wont even trust our kids with plastic knifes and jumping rope.

  • No one has ever stood up for me, not even my closest friend. It hurts.

  • the kid that stoud up first for his friends got balls!!!

  • I WANT A TEACHER LIKE THAT!

  • great emphatic listening in an empathy deficient society

  • I love this man. He is a remarkable example of what a human being can be.

  • Throughout all 5 videos, I've been smiling through tears. These aren't my kids, but they are the same kids that I teach. I only see them in English class, but this shows that they're not just the goofballs screwing around in class. They're real kids, real humans. Thanks for helping me see another side of my kids. Monday morning will be much easier to wake up to now.

  • Ohh my god, i love this teacher, my daughter has two year old and iam scared about the school for her, iam from Argentina and the education is very very bad!

  • i love how the teacher is proud of his student! if that happened in my country... LOL that kid defending his friend would be in trouble!

  • omg that little girl defending her friend and then starts crying... even grownups would never act that way! solidarity!

  • i love japan

  • Not once have I ever experienced a teacher helping a student, in fact I've seen them laugh along. It makes me sick, things have to change.

  • OMG, what an amazing teacher and amazing kids. We can all learn from them.

  • Good teachers are pound for pound the most important commodity that exists in a society.

  • The people of Japan are so inspiring to me.

  • Yo is my hero

  • Wow I wish we had teachers like that and the the kids were so nice to each other. They really learn how to live life and stand up for each other and not to push someone down. Great

  • omg these kids cry about everything and yeveryone! They must fricken love eachither! <3<3

  • I can't help but smile with them.

  • damn i couldn't stop crying and im a guy this was prob. the most amazing video i've seen on youtube

  • This is so remarkeable, I will be working with children one day too & will try to use this technique for them to understand each others differences.

  • I'm so proud of Yo. Where I'm from, if you confront the teacher about something they might not be doing right, however humble you are, you get punished ten-fold. If I had a teacher like this, maybe I wouldn't be such a pesimistic person. Teachers are suppose to love teaching and making and molding children's lives into something better. But, only a handful of those teachers are existant. Now most teachers take advantage of their authority and try to hurt students' success and accomplishments.

  • we need to clone this teacher and put ten in every school in the world. amazing documentary that shows us how should we teach and treat children.

  • I have lived in Japan for 3 years and I think there are so many exceptional teachers here.

They not only teach you the curriculum but lessons in life which in the end are more important. The teacher who taught me Japanese would talk to me after class and when ever I wanted to about respecting others but speaking out when you think something is unfair. I swear if it weren't for him, I wouldn't be the person I am now. I have eternal gratitude for people like Kanamori.

  • The children in this are so mature and intelligent when the moment calls for it and they are so child like at other times.

I also think the teacher was very cool as he did not have to back down and let the boy go rafting but he listened to the children and actually thought about it and agreed with them. In my school if you tried you would probably have ended up being punished along with the person you were trying to stick up for.

    Awesome class and teacher!

  • 10 they seem so much younger then that but have great wisdom and speak well

  • I LOVE this!!

  • These children have more intelligence than our average university graduates. Sure, they may be knowledgeable and have memorized many things, but that's all building castles out of air. What these children are learning is much more valuable.

  • Japan is a high civil sociaty , i am amazed with this story , a teacher teach students about responsibillities but he also lets student speak up their mind and he also let student wont their team mate back because their well said . AmaZing teacher and wonderful students , these kids will speak up their mind if they think it must say without fear when they grow up . No wonder why Japan is a high organized civil sociaty , today !

  • Not a single chav in sight. Japan is so lucky :)

  • "the pool and the raft are sort of related but unrelated"----wow, what a powerful message underneath :)

  • @najus1000 read your comment before the video... didnt think it was going to be said by the child as he sticks up for his freind lol.

  • @maxgunn555 that's why that message makes it more powerful :)

  • @najus1000 what was the message though??

  • Best classroom in the world!!!

  • very intelligent children.... respect them all

  • They all are sweethearts! And that's a great teacher! <3

  • the teacher taught them well. it is such a privilege to be in his class.

  • Just amazed. I'm one of the fortunate few that has been blessed with encountering a teacher who shared the same teaching philosophy. This documentary reminded me how much she has taught me when I was a child. I kept in touch with my teacher, but she passed away a few years ago, and this clip just made me breakdown, thinking about the privileged time I had spent with her.

I'm in total agreement with Brewskee's comment. Phenomenal indeed.

  • This is intense

  • These children are more mature than many adults, already. This man is really doing something right.

This brought tears to my eyes and gave me a little more hope for the human race. =)

  • The teacher (and these kids) are a great example of what teamwork should be, no matter what kind of teamwork it is. :,)

  • Bring him to my children's school - today!!!

  • The world needs more teacher like him - teaching children compassion and understanding; he's absolutely amazing.

  • all i have to say is WOWWWW ...so much compassion..and love..this is the way the world should be .

  • i think the teacher has been through a lot in his life ....

    any one agrees ?

  • To be able to create an atmosphere where in a 10-year old can be afraid yet not discouraged to speak up to an adult, is an amazing feat. It is mind-blowing for someone from the "speak only when you are spoken to" generation.

I love how Yo kept on buckling and his voice kept on squeaking but he kept on defending his friend and finally encouraged the rest of the class to join his plea.

This is my favorite of all 5 parts.

  • wonderful. what good adults they will be,

  • These children are amazing. and so is their teacher.

  • What a beautiful man! He is setting these children free!

  • If I had a teacher and a class like that I would have become a much better and capable person than I am today. Seeing this, I really regret that I never got to know love and that I didn´t give love to those I´ve met during my (school)life. I hope that one teacher who called me a thief because I took home a coloring sheet at age of 9, could see this video and realize the damage she'd done. These kids and their parents are the lucky ones. Watashi ima kara ganbarimasu, happi ni naru no tame ni!

  • It would be amazing to revisit these kids once they graduate High School.

  • i want to know where this teacher was when i was in school

  • These kids are definitely on the right track. I admire the teacher for guiding the kids so well in understanding one self, life and people. This is the real purpose of education and to be precise these kids are well educated. Thanks to the teacher and love the kids.

  • if i can become a coach half as good as he is a teacher, I will be satisfied that I have done well.

  • @fizzywizzy2006 Goodluck!

  • @chi81216 thats funny. this man is extremely atypical of japanese schoolteachers.

  • I am so going to show this to my teacher and tell we need her to show it to the class. I think we all should do that. It will have the teachers to change and become like Katamari(the guy).

  • Man... I bawled watching this. It brings back so many memories of my childhood.

  • 感動的眼淚已經潰堤了.......

  • omg, I never seen kids act this way, where Im from when the teacher grounds you, no one stands up for you,you are just left behind and the kids all go play and forget about you.

  • @AllenDGM Exactly... I am quite sure that where I'm from, the children would be actually HAPPY you were getting punished... The society is pretty messed up these days. People are lost, they have their moral values and priorities all wrong..

  • @AllenDGM Respect, it must go in every direction to exist. It is a glorious thing when it is present.

  • I can't stop crying watching this... from the compassion and the empathy that these children are being taught. If only the world over was understanding like this and had the chance to learn in these types of circumstances. It would certainly be a better place.

  • The truthfulness and honesty of these kids makes me sad to think of how school is elsewhere.

  • "Through the eyes of a child"

  • This man manages to bring the best out of those children. It's amazing.

  • Interesting. It's good that the children stood up for Yuto. In a normal setting, everyone would be in it for themselves and saving their own hides. That's pretty much the problem with today's society. No personal responsibility and sense of integrity or honesty. Time for Part 4.

  • it´s amazing how such young kids help each other and stand up for each other....

  • sensei has his eyes closed while the children are making their cases because he doesn't wanna cry either hahaha.

  • these kids have more courage than i do

  • man this is too much... choking me up...geeze!

  • This teacher is a hero, but he is not the only one. I am an American who has lived in Japan for nearly 20 years. This teacher inspires me to be a better man,but so does American teacher Rafe Esquith. Please read about him and his students and watch them in action. I think you will see a similar dynamic to what is happening in Mr. Kanemori's classroom.

  • American teachers don't give a @#$% about their students *sigh*

  • Too many teachers just want to exercise their authority and they never give children a chance to express themselves. I think in that sense many children in the education system grow up with their feelings and emotion cauterized. But Mr K. is an exceptional teacher. I wish there were more like him.

  • 0:31-0:33 sooo cute :DD

  • I dont think I ve ever played in the mud like that... o_o

  • @jasonchuu omg u gotta try it its FUN! lols even as an adult i'll sometimes join in with my neices & nephews :D

  • Mr. Kanamori is a wonderful person, the best example of goodliness in somebody's character.

    金森さんに:あなたはすばらしい人です!

    がんばって

  • OMG!!!

0:02 , so hott! SO HOTT! i definatly would

    he knows what i mean, 0:12 ... listen ;)

  • school isn't even for learning in the US, I learned more after class was over than I did in class.

  • The great teacher!

Bow to the earth such as he.

  • In US, if you a guy and cry, they'll laugh at you and call you a pussy. Guys nowdays are too conceited.

  • @stmc247 thumbs way up!

  • no wonder the crime rate in Japan's so low.

  • i almost cried while watchin this video...Although this is teacher abit fierce, but he olso a good teacher....

  • I cried my eyes out watching this videos..

These children are more adult than any other 'grown up' in this world!

If the politic would be filled by only 10% of the love these children have, the world would look a whole lot different!

I love this teacher and I can only hope and pray that I will ever be a bit like him when I'm teaching..

  • Every single piece of this is making me cry! :) I love this teacher; I love these kids. He's teaching them real, authentic values and ethics and decision-making tools that they'll carry through life because they've learned them in action...I'm just inspired.

  • God I've watched this like 5 times and have cried every time!

  • i hated teachers , but now i don't .

  • beautiful it makes me cry childen are just so wonderful! :)

  • A teacher admitting he was wrong, and kids who can speak up without fear of retaliation I would have loved to go to a school like this american schools suck!

  • absolutely amazing teacher. i wish i can someday become like him: compassionate, considerate, and caring towards all his students. i would *love* to see more teachers like him. this is exactly what kids need to be taught. here in america, it's always about every man for himself, and in japan, it's almost as if feelings are meaningless and embarrassing. it brought tears to my eyes to see the children willingly stick up for yuto and challenge the teacher. i don't know anybody who would do that.

  • I love seeing the progression of this Master's teachings with his 10 year old students. These students will go far in happiness in Life.... I'm sure not all teachers in Japan are this incredible and wonder what it is like. I appreciate the thread of responses to this video-adding to the hopefulness I am feeling.... "if one person is unhappy then everyone is unhappy." Kids do know the big picture if we allow them to articulate it- my granddaughters come up with similar wisdom!

  • I just cried and cried watching this. How touching, that the children didn't want to ride the rafts if one member only couldn't ride.

Where do they teach that in their society and how?

I think we Americans have a lot to learn from the Eastern, more group-oriented, societies.

  • how old are you when your in fourth.grade in japan? i remember when i was in fourh grade, nobody would cry like this, well maybe after taking a rock in the head or getting beaten with sticks. people tried smoking/snus, and we really didnt give a fuck what our teacher told us, All i remember of our head teacher, is screaming and yelling the shit out of us. I never had i teacher i was so scared of :D. guess they have it pretty good in japan.

  • Man Yo Anamoto is the definition of awesome bro for sticking up for Yuto.

  • I hate watching kids crying...

These kids have restored my faith in humanity!

And the kid's have well develeoped thoughts and dieas.

Beautiful series. I can see why it's "award-winning" that's for sure!

  • I would have loved to have a teacher like that. What a caring teacher....

  • Wow ... i almost wish this documentary would never end , it's like food for the soul! I'm definitively gonna rewatch it many times , a rare gem .

  • This class is more intense than any of the 19 years of schooling I went through.

  • i tot japan is all about cram school

  • woow this is extremely shocking. its amazing how these children have a sense of justice and have well developed thoughts. i am in awe that they were able to hold up an argument like that.

  • Oh, GOD! I felt so nervous for Yo-kun! Kanamori-san seems nice and caring, but he also feels like he'll slapabyatch, figuratively, of course. Just his face when the children were talking sent shivers down my spine!

  • these kids are soo smart and cute. They are a inspiration.America Really need something like this.No one cares about eachother anymore...Everybody is just put down..

  • @shippo481 because if there were teachers like him north america he'd be fired because the parents would be sung the school for abuse

  • So beautiful!

  • In my schooll..when one being taken foward by teacher..all others will just beeing silence... And this....its just like...WoW...

  • Why couldn't I have a teacher like him? -.-

  • God, these kids are cute. I want to take all f them home :'(

  • Yo-kun was so brave to speak up!

  • These kids... in a word? Amazing!!! :D

  • Si Ki Lino Ji Ni Coi Ti.?

  • yuto is gunna grow up to be a punk rocker. awesome kid. highly intelligent for his age and brave. i wish him the best in his life.

  • The way these kids think and speak is like that of an experienced old man. This teacher has taught these kids more empathy and understanding than most of the people I have met in my life. Phenomenal.

  • those kids are amazing...speaking up for there fellow class mate, that man must of been proud. this documentary should be shown in class rooms as well as child development courses.

  • Greatest teacher ever, we should clone him and send copies to every school here in America. "domo arigato" for the videos!

  • This is totally unrelated to the video but see how none of the kids is overweight? There most be something right with the japanese diet!

  • @alyssidax body type of the Japanese and maybe diet. They may not be near a huge city so not much fast food. I live in Korea and its very different than say here in Korea. I teach alot of fat kids here.

  • @Taxidriverdeniro Yeah but it says it's in Northwest Tokyo. But I noticed the thing when I was in China couple months ago and in Hong Kong there were overweight children and people but outside of Hong Kong in the rural towns I didn't see any fat kids.

  • I can't believee Japanese Children is full of feeling and loving people....I wish i was one of them.... I always wanted to be like that too, but i don't have a chance in U.S.A...... Teachers here aren't teaching us life like this.....I love that teacher sooo much.....That's the real TEACHER........That's what the word TEACHER means.....

  • A real teacher. A real human being.

  • These children are being taught honour and i think they begin to understand this when they begin standing up for Yuto.

  • so beautiful. why can't the whole world be like this?

  • @Mikkedev doubt it

  • Ugh. I wish everyone could learn with a teacher like this... I hate it. I'm going to admit it, I'm one of those that wouldn't speak out about things, I am afraid to cry or be who I am, I will go along and make fun of people, I have no true friend like Yo. I am a coward. This is so precious... but really. In my class (u.s., high school) someone cries and tries to share feelings or whatever like this, bell rings, lunch: "hah did you see that kid? What a loser, crying!?" ...I feel empty.
  • why do they always have to cry argghhhh its sooo contagious!!!!

  • I love how he teaches them to question authority when it's the right thing to do.

  • Everyone stands up against the teacher for a single kid... Would be nice if the real world was like this. Ppl in their hearts, are cowards and conformists. Normal scenario would have everyone quietly accept the teacher's decision and ditch their classmate.

  • wow. Leadership, Teamwork, self-confident and courage was displayed in this part. wow. i am shocked and .... WOW

  • in my school you wold have been kicked out and given detention for being 'disruptive' if u spoke up like that, not listened to and for it to go like it did...

  • The lesson here, as I learned, is to let natural consequences be the result of "talking too much in class". As Kanemori rightly expressed at the end, " the crime didn't merit the punishment"....totally unrelated.

  • i wish people was this helpful and kind in real life.. everyone in America that ive met was mean, and taught me to trust just myself.

  • I like how the children's emotions are uninhibited and raw. Just pure honest emotion.

  • "It should've been me crying all those tears." ...That did it for me. Why? Unsure. Oh, and the last boy at the end of this clip. Truly an Amazing Teacher as he has Amazing students. n_n

  • i like how the teacher plays the bad guy to teach them a lesson in sticking up for your friends. This guys awesome, unfortunately in america the parents would complain to the school board.

  • This documentary is so touching/great that even the narrator is crying at 7:30
