@rxc128 - The government got a majority from 39% of the popular vote. Not only that, they sent out irritating phone calls pretending to be opposing parties and Elections Canada.
In America, not a single Democratic politician has ever truly stood up to Bush as fiercely and directly as these guys have to Harper, and yet, Harper still wins a majority government.
@Sahluful just goes to show the lack of civic engagement of the general population; most people didn't watch the debate, never mind actually critically thinking about the issues themselves
To those that question Prime Minister Harper's Chess skills, where did the majority come from. I don't want to hear about the, what? low voter turnout. Don't include these people in any calculation . If they can't be bothered to vote they don't matter at all.
If anyone honestly believes that socialist politicians are good for the economy, then you should really stay away from the poll booths. Jack Layton was an amazing public speaker but its quite simple: if you take money from the consumors then you will have less money to spend. If you have less money to spend then you cant buy as much at which point the problem will continue to increase and the economy will suffer. Look at europe, they are generally more socialist then north america.
Jack Layton was a brilliant statesman. I like to think that had he lived, and later became Prime Minister, that he would've sided with the republican movement, and side with Canadianizing the Head of State position. As a nation, Canada needs to have a stronger self-regard & self-confidence about itself; and should be able to eventually let go of being a mere adjunct of Great Britain.
They gave Harper another go at it, and a majority, because he easily bends over if you know what I mean. A "TEAM" player. They had no use for a free thinker like Jack... and now that's all taken care of too. God bless demockracy eh...

That's funny when Canadians brag to the US they say their x don't even stink. In your own debates your leftists sit there and tell each other that Canada sucks as if it were on the brink of bankruptcy. Then you go to an American site like Yahoo and look in the forums and Canadians are constantly barging in and telling everyone Canada is like the most stable and financially responsible country on earth.
Layton:Mr. Harper,either you don't care or you're incompetent.Which is it?
Harper:First of all,I want to announce that I am a cross dressing homosexual.Second,I have reduced the GST,but found a new hidden way of taxing Canadians to make up for that reduction.Third,George Bush is my master and I lick his boots clean even though he is not president anymore. And finally I have sold Canada to Obama for 18 American dollars. Now if you will excuse me I am off to SanFrancisco to get high and buttfuck

just to let all you clown socialists know the oil companies and banks are already the biggest contributers to government tax revenue ( thats not including the tax payed by workers )
@helloyou64 You know that sentiment is the exact reason we have creative brain drains to the US and Europe, right? Because Canadians devalue artists? I'm just so fed up with guys like this. Harper, Ignatieff and of course ! McGuinty, are the three most arrogant, two faced liars on the face of this earth !. This type of politics is so out of date & becoming absolutely sick-ning. We must begin to place leaders that will actually do things we want !, things that will actually improve our lives & not continually suck away our wealth and way of life.
there is nothin wrong with the NDP they are the only Party that seems to make sense anymore and Jack Layton would make a good Prime Minister and a good majority NDP government. He needs to be given a chance.
Many people dont know that Ignatieff lived in the USA for the last 20 years and just returned now are you gonna vote for somebody who hasn't even lived here during the last most important years in our country.
He would be a great prime minister precisely because he's part of the NDP. Jack Layton's appeal is derived much from his values and political stance that you don't find in the other parties. Now if you think Jack LAyton would make a great prime minister vote for the NDP.
@Mao8999 Ohhhh...you mean Bob Rae? The multitude of federal Tory and Liberal gov't scandals and failures don't amount to anything? Are they to be left with impunity? Get real! This is 2011. Not twenty years ago, times are different.
@Mao8999 so in Ontario you honestly think the GLOBAL recession in the early 90's was caused by the NDP, GET REAL it was caused by the right wing economics of mulroney, the free trade agreement. and the thing about the social contract that was supposed to have failed? well guess what MOST provincialgovernments with a brain cell created the same plan to cut expendtures from quebec to BC and everything in between cuts were made to welfare and caps on wages were created regardles who was in power.
I read Jack Layton and his wife were renting subsidized housing years ago when there combined income was over $120,000. And he calls himself honest.
Wow, it's like Stephen Harper sitting at a table of Children who won't let him speak. I love how mature and smart Harper is compared to the rest of these hacks. The other guys come off as extremely stupid and don't know how to debate respectfully. This "round table" format better be scraped in the next election, also May better be told to stay home this time around, parties with no seats don't deserve to be in a debate.
@EllerySneed This is clearly a video put together by someone who doesn't support Harper. Did you watch the debate? It wasn't like this, these are just highlights.
"We have the shame of being the only country in the world that ratified Kyoto that's chosen to ignore it." Yes... I'm so ashamed! Canadians are worthless maggots!
Everyone else - tax the s$#t out of everything, drive business away, make people depend on the government, and turn them into their commie drones. ;-D
Why did they let that stupid woman Elizabeth may into the leadership debate? You shouldn't be considered a real federal party if you can't get a seat.
@MajBlood They got around 5% of the popular vote though, obviously their platform is supported by a reasonable amount of Canadians, they just aren't concentrated enough to win seats in our system.
"Are the Conservatives barbarians?" <-- actual question from the moderator.
What a joke the format of this debate was. 4-on-1 meant 80% of the time was questions and 20% were answers. How is that supposed to help Canadians make a choice?
They keep on saying that Harper is out of touch with voters. If that were the case, why did he become Prime Minister in the first place? He doesn't have a majority, but he won the election fair and square. And I wish whoever edited this would put in some of Harper's responses to the other's accusations. I'd like to know how he answered.
A majority of Canadians voted for parties with center-left agendas...under 40% voted for the Consevatives and only voters in Calgary-Southwest elected Stephen Harper.
These fucking fools need to step outside of themselves.
Is it better to support a leader, or constantly bitch at the current leader, because they're not leaders themselves, which results in a weakened country.
I stopped swearing allegiance to parties long ago.
Whatever is the best for Canada at the time, is what I vote for.
Look you two seriously need to get civilized. I'm with you on this particular issue cstcorpse, though I don't approve of your vulgar descriptive language. Second, werdorino just because Elizabeth May, Dion, and Jack Layton care about environmental issues and devolopement doesn't mean they are stupid.
According to your logic, allowing Exxon (American petroleum products company) tax cuts while ignoring Zenn (Canadian electric car company) and not even legalizing their cars in most provinces is the answer.
You are completely wrong and biased against any political leader who is even vaguely left wing/ liberal (not the party, the definition). Also, all other party leaders besides Harper bring up health care issues and communicate how they intend to solve them while our current prime minister fails to even release a campaign platform.
Lastly, Harper continues to put our troops through an endless war (started by lies of nuclear weapons in Iraq) while all other leaders oppose it in some way or form (most noticeably Duceppe). If you seriously believe what the other party leaders are saying is complete garbage then you are as biased as Bill O'Reilly.
and one more thing, the tories are sticking to a plan that gets troops off the ground by 2011, switching our role to development and training. this is something the liberals in fact agree with them on (minority government, etc...). So either the liberals are also the warmongers you accuse the tories of being, or your facts are wrong. please don't accuse people of senseless bias (my first comment was tongue in cheek) when you yourself do a fox style retelling of events.
The liberals originally proposed to have the troops withdrawn by 2009 and were supported by the bloc. It was the conservatives who pushed for a stay until 2011. Also, the crisis in the Middle East was started in 2003 by the invasion of Iraq, since then it has spread to other Middle Eastern countries. The "Iraq fiasco" as you say, was begun by George Bush when he received faulty information on nuclear arms in Iraq.
Upon learning that this information was faulty he chose to continue the war. As well, the reason the liberal's opinions have changed slightly toward the war (they are no longer pushing for complete withdrawal) is because we now have a different leader. Oh and back in 2003 neither Dion nor Ignatieff was the leader of the Liberal part Lastly, Fox news is right wing, not left so please dont try to compare my explanations to a biased news station.
as long as anyone can remember there's been a "crisis" in the middle east. You still also haven't addressed the fact that the liberals supported the conservative motion for 2011 (thats what happens in minority governments). Another tidbit to maybe change your fear of conservatives, Elizabeth May worked for Brian Mulroney! DA DA DA!!! could she be one!! hmmm, CONSERVation.... maybe the political spectrums not as simple as you might think.
Many have even called Ignatieff's opinions (Iraq, Bosnia, torture) "right wing". That's what drove the "stupid leftists" comment, because canadian debating has become so schewed that having one of FIVE candidates be mildly right of centre is considered an outrage
Let me repeat, since your obviously not reading my explanations. The Liberals were pushing for withdrawal by 2009, the conservatives pushed for 2011 and were then supported by Ignatieff (Not Dion who was the leader of the opposition at the time when withdrawal dates were being proposed) .
Secondly, I actually think that Brian Mulroney was a decent leader. I'm not against conservatives in general, I just don't appreciate how Harper seems to be making art cuts as well as ignoring the Kyoto protocal.
Also, just because Elizabeth May was once a conservative does not mean she is conservative for life.Lastly, I don't consider most of Ignatieff's opinions to be too "right wing" he seems to be a stable leader and has already proven to be a formidable leader of the opposition.
Just on a side note though, I'm not biased towards political parties or right wingers, but it's political action which derives my opinions. The reason I'm so opposed to harper being in power is because he isn't doing anything major besides making GST cuts.
i must say ignatieff is a good leader. i found it surprising though why he joined the liberal party (never saw any parralels). Your right about Harper, however it is obvious that i he had a majority he'd be doing more, whether it'd be good or bad is debateable. I'm into a kind of government that lets citezens do things themselves for the most part (obviously there's some need for government programs tho) which is why i lean to conservatives. liberals and ndp are just too statist in their approac
dude, we're not in iraq......and our afghan mission (UN approved, initiated during a liberal government) started way before the Iraq fiasco, in response to a terrorist attack. You were making good points up until that, even though I'm not sure who they were directed at
As a citizen of this country I am appalled with this display. If you can't do the job, then find someone who can. Your people want you to talk to them, just only if you could.
All this shows the country is that our current party leaders are interested in only one thing...grabbing the power seat.
This is totally unacceptable behaviour from so called leaders who are suppose to relate to the people and run our country. Not one of them addressed the Canadian people, and gave a solid discernible answer to one of these questions.
Mr. Layton was a good politician may he rest in peace all Canadians/Le Canadiens let us forget political stripes he was a good man

@Mao8999 Ohhhh...you mean Bob Rae? The multitude of federal Tory and Liberal gov't scandals and failures don't amount to anything? Are they to be left with impunity? Get real! This is 2011. Not twenty years ago, times are different.
apacpaco 10 months ago
@Mao8999 so in Ontario you honestly think the GLOBAL recession in the early 90's was caused by the NDP, GET REAL it was caused by the right wing economics of mulroney, the free trade agreement. and the thing about the social contract that was supposed to have failed? well guess what MOST provincialgovernments with a brain cell created the same plan to cut expendtures from quebec to BC and everything in between cuts were made to welfare and caps on wages were created regardles who was in power.

EllerySneed 11 months ago
@EllerySneed This is clearly a video put together by someone who doesn't support Harper. Did you watch the debate? It wasn't like this, these are just highlights.

@HardcoreBlofish Imagine what this year's debate is going to be like, with the blunders Harper has made already.

@EllerySneed I guess you don't remember Harper constantly interrupting Paul Martin, during the 2006 debate (I think it was that one, anyway).

This is what happens when the CBC is in charge of a debate:
A format where 4 people attack 1* without giving the 1 the time to respond, ask questions like "Are Conservatives barbarians?"
(Well, 2 if you include their #1 target, George Bush).

Why did they let that stupid woman Elizabeth may into the leadership debate? You shouldn't be considered a real federal party if you can't get a seat.
MajBlood 1 year ago 3
@MajBlood They got around 5% of the popular vote though, obviously their platform is supported by a reasonable amount of Canadians, they just aren't concentrated enough to win seats in our system.
ifeeltiredsleepy 1 year ago
"Are the Conservatives barbarians?" <-- actual question from the moderator.
What a joke the format of this debate was. 4-on-1 meant 80% of the time was questions and 20% were answers. How is that supposed to help Canadians make a choice?
robvollman 1 year ago 2
who the hell voted in these conservative chumps
sndd0138 2 years ago
Fucking Layton. His party has rarely had any real power, so he can get away with intentionally inflammatory remarks all the time.
Anghellik9 2 years ago
They keep on saying that Harper is out of touch with voters. If that were the case, why did he become Prime Minister in the first place? He doesn't have a majority, but he won the election fair and square. And I wish whoever edited this would put in some of Harper's responses to the other's accusations. I'd like to know how he answered.
canadarox14 2 years ago
In Canada you don't "win" elections. We're a parliamentary democracy, not a Presidential republic.

Second, werdorino just because Elizabeth May, Dion, and Jack Layton care about environmental issues and devolopement doesn't mean they are stupid.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
According to your logic, allowing Exxon (American petroleum products company) tax cuts while ignoring Zenn (Canadian electric car company) and not even legalizing their cars in most provinces is the answer.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
You are completely wrong and biased against any political leader who is even vaguely left wing/ liberal (not the party, the definition). Also, all other party leaders besides Harper bring up health care issues and communicate how they intend to solve them while our current prime minister fails to even release a campaign platform.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Lastly, Harper continues to put our troops through an endless war (started by lies of nuclear weapons in Iraq) while all other leaders oppose it in some way or form (most noticeably Duceppe). If you seriously believe what the other party leaders are saying is complete garbage then you are as biased as Bill O'Reilly.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Read these comments in chronological order.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
and one more thing, the tories are sticking to a plan that gets troops off the ground by 2011, switching our role to development and training. this is something the liberals in fact agree with them on (minority government, etc...). So either the liberals are also the warmongers you accuse the tories of being, or your facts are wrong. please don't accuse people of senseless bias (my first comment was tongue in cheek) when you yourself do a fox style retelling of events.
werdorino 2 years ago
The liberals originally proposed to have the troops withdrawn by 2009 and were supported by the bloc. It was the conservatives who pushed for a stay until 2011. Also, the crisis in the Middle East was started in 2003 by the invasion of Iraq, since then it has spread to other Middle Eastern countries. The "Iraq fiasco" as you say, was begun by George Bush when he received faulty information on nuclear arms in Iraq.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Upon learning that this information was faulty he chose to continue the war. As well, the reason the liberal's opinions have changed slightly toward the war (they are no longer pushing for complete withdrawal) is because we now have a different leader. Oh and back in 2003 neither Dion nor Ignatieff was the leader of the Liberal part Lastly, Fox news is right wing, not left so please dont try to compare my explanations to a biased news station.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Read in chronological order.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
as long as anyone can remember there's been a "crisis" in the middle east. You still also haven't addressed the fact that the liberals supported the conservative motion for 2011 (thats what happens in minority governments). Another tidbit to maybe change your fear of conservatives, Elizabeth May worked for Brian Mulroney! DA DA DA!!! could she be one!! hmmm, CONSERVation.... maybe the political spectrums not as simple as you might think.
werdorino 2 years ago
Many have even called Ignatieff's opinions (Iraq, Bosnia, torture) "right wing". That's what drove the "stupid leftists" comment, because canadian debating has become so schewed that having one of FIVE candidates be mildly right of centre is considered an outrage
werdorino 2 years ago
Let me repeat, since your obviously not reading my explanations. The Liberals were pushing for withdrawal by 2009, the conservatives pushed for 2011 and were then supported by Ignatieff (Not Dion who was the leader of the opposition at the time when withdrawal dates were being proposed) .
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Secondly, I actually think that Brian Mulroney was a decent leader. I'm not against conservatives in general, I just don't appreciate how Harper seems to be making art cuts as well as ignoring the Kyoto protocal.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Also, just because Elizabeth May was once a conservative does not mean she is conservative for life.Lastly, I don't consider most of Ignatieff's opinions to be too "right wing" he seems to be a stable leader and has already proven to be a formidable leader of the opposition.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
Just on a side note though, I'm not biased towards political parties or right wingers, but it's political action which derives my opinions. The reason I'm so opposed to harper being in power is because he isn't doing anything major besides making GST cuts.
Makethedifference777 2 years ago
i must say ignatieff is a good leader. i found it surprising though why he joined the liberal party (never saw any parralels). Your right about Harper, however it is obvious that i he had a majority he'd be doing more, whether it'd be good or bad is debateable. I'm into a kind of government that lets citezens do things themselves for the most part (obviously there's some need for government programs tho) which is why i lean to conservatives. liberals and ndp are just too statist in their approac
werdorino 2 years ago
dude, we're not in iraq......and our afghan mission (UN approved, initiated during a liberal government) started way before the Iraq fiasco, in response to a terrorist attack. You were making good points up until that, even though I'm not sure who they were directed at

Jack Layton is an annoying little twerp. He spent the entire debate attacking Harper, even if it wasn't on any particular subject.
We need some good party leaders. Right now, the best we have is Duceppe, and he's the head of a party that I absolutely hate.
Layton and May acted like fucking children during the debate.

As a citizen of this country I am appalled with this display. If you can't do the job, then find someone who can. Your people want you to talk to them, just only if you could.
CarterdeMars 3 years ago
All this shows the country is that our current party leaders are interested in only one thing...grabbing the power seat.
This is totally unacceptable behaviour from so called leaders who are suppose to relate to the people and run our country. Not one of them addressed the Canadian people, and gave a solid discernible answer to one of these questions.
