Guy has skills, very very good. I'm just not a personal fan of being able to use electronic samples in a drum-off. I believe it gives an advantage to whoever can find/make/rip better samples... I like how it used to be strictly about the acoustics of drumming.
Solid. Lots of flow, nice use of the electronic pads...not overdone. Entertaining.
Just a side note: Is there anything more tired than the old "unless you can do better..." rant? Why does someone have to be a drummer (or whatever the subject is) to voice an opinion about something? That is a sure sign of being insecure...not a big enough person to handle some criticism. These are usually the worst type of musician to have a s a bandmate.
Ok, why do some you idiots think you should win only if your f**king distroying the kit with f**king 1000 hits per second! He won because his solo was different, creative, well thought out and MUSICAL.Drummers are musicians they don't just hit stuff.Leave acide that he is a musician he also has sick speed, chops and craaazy independence.I've watched the other guys play, but his solo is just...musical,he deserves the win!!!
Haters... this was actually entertaining. I'm a drummer and solos usually bore me (unless it's a good one... i.e. West Side Story, Moby Dick, etc.). I'd say he did a good job. :D
def. ripped alot of stuff from benny greb and jojo mayer. This guy has the ability to put on a show waaay better than this! def agree that it was good up to the cowbell.
This guy definitely deserves the win! He's very creative and talented! I would really Like to see some more solos from him. And I REALLY hope he's able to and does read my comment Just so he can see and revive one more Complement of Great Job!! He deserves that award!!
At first I thought the splash with no top felt washer and wing nut would be a massive problem when trying to hit it, but that all changed at 2:24. Very creative.
Using the Roland Octopad is so genius. A different solo from any in recent years, this one shows an excellent example of independent movement, but it is still awesome.
Oh look he took a cymbal off the stand. It's not like the previous 5 champions haven't done that. Oh and what he did with the foot cowbell is terrible. Really bad sense of rhythm in this solo.
JP went through my middle school a years back, I'm not sure how many. My band teacher showed up this and she is very proud of him. JP, if you see this, you rock!!
This guy definitely got the skills, but there really wasn't any rythem; everything wad just all over the place. He's got his coordination and speed really going for him! I think he just needs to put all of that talent, into some choreographed- rythem?
Despite the rack tom sounding like an empty milk carton being hit with a wiffle ball bat, that was one of the coolest god dang solos i have seen in a long time
One more......NOTHING about machine gun double bass is impressive, NOTHING. Especially not when your hands aren't doing a single things to compliment it, just throwing sticks around and hitting the occasional symbol. There had to be a better, more musical drummer competing SOMEWHERE in the country in 2011. If not, I picked the wrong year to stop competing.
Oh, and isn't this "Drum Off"????? When did midi attachments suddenly start being allowed, completely ruins the point of the contest. Anyone can be musical on a synth pad programmed to play within a key signature
Almost turned it off at the beginning. Good drummer, but don't start your "winning performance" with hand/foot patterns that you can't come close to doing evenly.
dislike. I agree with Jesse based on tone alone. His toms have no resonance to them. It is all attack. Same for his snare. Not hating the guy, he has talent, I just don't want to play with him based on this video.
@dohboy7500 Yeah I think the guy has a phenomenal talent. He'd be an amazing addition to any band's tour. His live show is spectacular. I just wouldn't know where to begin while tracking him. Gotta hit the same spot of the drum a certain way to get the right sound, and when you hear clicks, that's the rim... not the head. etc... but hey, there's arguable more money on tour if you're part of the act right? Can always get vinnie c. to take care of the session ;)
@jessenemitz There has been past Drum Off winners with plenty of groove. I don't think this competition is about "real-world" technique. I've heard arguments like yours say similar things about the Worlds Fastest Drummer competition...that's about speed.. and speed only. This Drum Off is about playing something ridiculously awesome sounding (to drummers) and JP does that.
He has chops, but I can understand why he is getting criticism for not grooving. You have to also understand that this is a competition of capability, I'm sure he can groove the hell out of any song, but it seems like this competition (forcing him to try to show off as much as possible for his time slot) is creating tension.
Ok that is two years in a row ( This one and the guy from 2010 ) that the Drum Off champion ended their "solo" the same way Jojo Mayer did at his solo at the 1998 Modern Drummer Festival...... htt p://ww w.youtube.c om /watch?v=6Eh9e9kkSmw Watch if you want proof. I understand that hes a great drummer to model yourself after but come on... be inspired by him, don't copy him....
Someone give this guy a cheeseburger :-P on a more serious note...I thought the solo was pretty innovative and unique, which probably gave him an edge against the other contestants. Can't wait to see the other finalists though!
I'm sorry but this solo didn't impress me at all- he's obviously a good drummer, but honestly is this really the best the competition could offer?? Not to brag, but I'm a drummer and I could have easily played this solo. I can't say that for any of the previous year's contestants or even finalists; they were all extremely impressive. There was nothing charismatic or even musical about this solo. 90% of it is just plain boring and the rest is mediocre.
AKA....you're in your schools jazz band and you think you're amazing when you still have LOADS to learn. Just because you play old style music (I do too, so do many people) doesn't mean you're some sort of god. Sure, this solo honestly wasn't really musical at all except for the intro...but it's innovation on the drumkit that will drive us all to be better. Instead of putting another drummer down, learn from him, there's a reason he WON THE DRUM OFF and you're not even in it.
@menator14 But what about the amazing drummers your not talking about? Like Thomas Lang, Danny Carey, Virgil Donati? Sure Joey Jordison isn't a "Great" drummer, but he has a right to play just like anybody else. You're young and arrogant, and unfortunately the only person who can stop that is yourself. Being modest and having an awesome attitude will get you far in life, but if you keep acting like a know it all litte asshole nobody will ever take you seriously..
@menator14 Just remember that when your sitting online with nothing better to do than bag on people who have a bright future in the industry. Sure i've seen wat better solos, but this guy kills it. This is a very innovative and awesome solo
@Blogdude87tx I didn't say that anyone was the best, I said some of the worlds elite, Aka some really good drummers are the judges and some of them do perform not as contestants but just for the hell of it
I wish people would stop saying Eric Moore used the pad in 2003. He didn't. The video that is up is not his winning solo. It is actually from the following year when he came back as a guest performer. That is why he was able to use the pad. The video from his winning solo is not up.
the haters think that making critics they'll gonna be better musicians or drummers. with critics they belive they gonna get better just speaking and saying a pail of rude words, i would like to see all of them playing in a gig or making a drum solo or even inscribing to the drum off next year..i bet that all of them suck!
Take away the electronic pad and what do you have? An above average, not great, solo. This competition has been lame the last couple of years. Where are the Chris Coleman's and the Daniel Rodriguez's?
I actually enjoyed this one. It wasnt the best one I've seen, but it certainly is better than last year's in my opinion. He kept the showing off to a minimum, and pretty much only doing it because he had to, not to mention the fact that he actually broke 4/4, which I didn't think I would ever see in any of these videos. The polyrhythm with the cowbell towards the end takes a lot of practice to pull off as well. He really did well at the end there as well. Overall, I would say a good performance.
This is what drumming has come to, using a "trigger pad" in a drum solo. Pitiful, absolutely pitiful. This Neanderthal that is playing, is mediocre. And I'm being quite generous by saying so. He looks like a hoodlum. I can
I love how easily it is to post a hateful comment on a video like this . You can say what ever you but do realize it just an opinion not a fact . And to people saying "he copied" he might have done similar things as some one else that has competed in this contest before but again realize there is no patent or copy right on drum licks this solo is 100 % JP and there really is much else need to be said !!!!!
He did a great a job, but i believe some of the up and comings will blow this guy away. I am hoping someone from the Stl IL area will take it this year just saying there some killer players out here.
Really cool and different. I definitely don't think he should've won tho.

I can't take him seriously, because he doesn't take himself nor drums seriously. I'm 1

Not the best but this guy can groove hard. Found myself paying attention the whole time (which is hard for me to do). Loved it.

He did a great a job, but i believe some of the up and comings will blow this guy away. I am hoping someone from the Stl IL area will take it this year just saying there some killer players out here.
