Guy has skills, very very good. I'm just not a personal fan of being able to use electronic samples in a drum-off. I believe it gives an advantage to whoever can find/make/rip better samples... I like how it used to be strictly about the acoustics of drumming.

Just a side note: Is there anything more tired than the old "unless you can do better..." rant? Why does someone have to be a drummer (or whatever the subject is) to voice an opinion about something? That is a sure sign of being insecure...not a big enough person to handle some criticism. These are usually the worst type of musician to have a s a bandmate.

One more......NOTHING about machine gun double bass is impressive, NOTHING. Especially not when your hands aren't doing a single things to compliment it, just throwing sticks around and hitting the occasional symbol. There had to be a better, more musical drummer competing SOMEWHERE in the country in 2011. If not, I picked the wrong year to stop competing.

@dohboy7500 Yeah I think the guy has a phenomenal talent.  He'd be an amazing addition to any band's tour. His live show is spectacular. I just wouldn't know where to begin while tracking him. Gotta hit the same spot of the drum a certain way to get the right sound, and when you hear clicks, that's the rim... not the head. etc... but hey, there's arguable more money on tour if you're part of the act right? Can always get vinnie c. to take care of the session ;)

I've heard arguments like yours say similar things about the Worlds Fastest Drummer competition...that's about speed.. and speed only. This Drum Off is about playing something ridiculously awesome sounding (to drummers) and JP does that.

You have to also understand that this is a competition of capability, I'm sure he can groove the hell out of any song, but it seems like this competition (forcing him to try to show off as much as possible for his time slot) is creating tension.

Sure, this solo honestly wasn't really musical at all except for the intro...but it's innovation on the drumkit that will drive us all to be better. I wish people would stop saying Eric Moore used the pad in 2003. He didn't. The video that is up is not his winning solo. It is actually from the following year when he came back as a guest performer. That is why he was able to use the pad. The video from his winning solo is not up.

I actually enjoyed this one. It wasnt the best one I've seen, but it certainly is better than last year's in my opinion. He kept the showing off to a minimum, and pretty much only doing it because he had to, not to mention the fact that he actually broke 4/4, which I didn't think I would ever see in any of these videos. The polyrhythm with the cowbell towards the end takes a lot of practice to pull off as well. He really did well at the end there as well. Overall, I would say a good performance.
