Great sound. It sounds like a old " HUNDESTED " 1 cylender motor. ( HUNDESTED is a old little town in Denmark, where there was make 1 cylendre motor,s to fishing boats in old days ).
lol thats engine is nice and all but i dont think it really matters lol 37½hp i think they just gussed back then, those engines dont look very strong at all, but like i said thats a nice engine
I think they just guessed too, because some of these engines can do way more than a modern engine of same horsepower classification. I think either they or we failed to take into account the mass and torque of these old engines. Once they get rolling, you can't stop them. I've seen 30hp steam tractors on here pulling a 12 bottom plow and the best most modern 30hp tractors can do is a 2 bottom plow.
When otto was working on his first engine he found that the engine produced more power when igniting the fuel vapour as apposed to burning fuel in liquid form, he was very successful in his engine designs, and by 1900 he became a well known engineer.
Is the black wheel next to the flywheel some sort of centrifugal clutch?

They built these engines to last! i have seen a few of them that are 100+ years old and still running strong as they had just left the factory

horsepower is a measure skewed towards rpm instead of torque,
a 37 hp engine like this, on wheels could pull a 300 hp car around no problem, even if the car was geared down and weighted up..
