  • aaaaaaah this song gives me so many feels

  • i'm confident this was not done in a single shot

  • The curtain appears to say The Mountain Gats.

  • Did anyone notice how that was one entire long shot?

That is so difficult to do in cinematography. Propppssssss for originality and difficulty bonus

  • @necroskiss I'm not sure if it is. I feel like sometimes they do a quick change between lyrics. Nonetheless, this is an amazing video from an amazing band.

  • @necroskiss its meant to look like one shot, but its not. (Think the movie Irreversible)

  • I just keep replaying this song. :)

  • Just when you thought being a cameraman was an easy job, BAM, this comes around.

Also, I really wish i could go to this place when its all painted up, it would be cool just to look around cause my mind cant create an image of the place with how much movement there is.

Also Also, The mountain goats kick ass.

  • How wonderful that one of the great songwriters of the age should connect with such a great film maker. John Darnielle is an extraordinary writer and this clip is brilliant.

    Tony

  • thumbs up if someone sent you here but you hate comments that say "thumbs up if someone sent you here" ???

  • This video concept is before its time. Very OKGO.

  • LOL, the video is sick, but hahahah, the lead singer looks so much like spawk,

  • I dont like music videos I think it never has anything to do with the song, but this video is ok.

  • This reminds me of how Hank (of the vlogbrothers) makes his music videos. Especially filming the text across the screen.

  • This band has some interesting visuals but I'm not into their sound

  • His voice reminds me of Scott Spillane from Gerbils.

  • @VIEWOSCOPE I was thinking the same thing. This bands writing style reminds me of Elephant 6 as a whole.

  • @RANDOMCOLLISION Yeah pretty much. I'm surprised they're not on E6.

  • Thumbs up if John Green sent you here!

  • 1:27 camera mans foot! :O

  • @stegie Nice catch.

  • THANK YOU JOHN GREEN FOR TURNING ME TOWARDS THE MOUNTAIN GOATS! :D (Dies, loving this song.)

  • @SherlockianGirl Harris watches Burn Notice

  • Ya know who he reminds me a bit of? Anyone watch Burn Notice on USA? Marv, from that. Face looks a bit like his.

  • this is what chop suey would sound like if they were happy all the time

  • Well done! Well done indeed.

  • 2:36-3:07 = <3

  • John Darnielle for president!

  • dear lord... they ARE the most artistic band ever...

  • lol it does have 135k views, watcha talkin about innate?

  • i think this video is quite amazingly cool. and the mountain goats are a genius band. love them. :)

  • good cinematic style with a good song makes a video memorable like this one

  • And an asian hangs on gallows, and her head eats my erection! all roads point toward the same ruined confections!

  • 10 scumbags need to choke on an AIDS-infested cock.

  • @SamEighteen ..That's a bit harsh...

  • @plazmamonkrylord It's his cock they are choking on clearly!

  • Shameful this video doesn't have even 130,ooo views. The crap videos I have seen and the crap artists that have millions of views shows me why the radio and MTV is dead! And the dummies in the industry just can't figure out why people are so disconnected from the music scene these days!

  • @InnateAmbitions uhm no surprise there eh? these days? MTV died like one year after it aired. radio isn't dead, you're just listening to the wrong kind of radio : ). nowadays even you could start an internet radio/podcast/public radio show. you wouldn't probably get over a 1000 listeners but still. music lives. disconnected from the scene, I live in finland for gods sake and we have indie rock clubs here, I assume they have something in states or wherever too. ^^ don't whine, do something! : D

  • this video.

  • Wow that have me headache and i didnt even watch the full video... I love you this song though :) one of the first mountain goat songs ive heard

  • Amazing! Great use of Kinetic Typography!

  • I am so going to their concert.

  • this is epic music video

  • That's an awesome video concept.

  • it's definitely a song!

  • man all of you guys are so dumb, it's definitely in 2/2

  • Yes! Please come to ATL!

  • they remind me of the weakerthans.

  • john darnielle and john k samson are good friends.

  • The mountain goats can't wait for the atlanta show! BECAUSE I"M COMING TO THE SHOW! IF ITS THE LAST THING THAT I DO!

  • I hope this band line up stays for a while, they work well together

  • Colbert bump!

  • Are there permanent members of The Mountain Goats that aren't John Darniele?

  • John Darnielle is the only member of The Mountain Goats who has been a part of it from its conception to the present. Peter Hughes is the current bass player and has been since Tallahassee was released. Jon Wurster has been the drummer on all recent albums as well

  • the mountain goats are so good at writing lyrics. its unbelievable one of the best bands ever. i dont know of another band that has such amazing lyrics in any song

  • No this is not a stalemate. This is absolutely 4/4 time. Even if somebody really wanted to notate this simple clave rhythm using time signatures rather than accents, 8/8 would not be appropriate. Dear god...

  • awsome vid great song love these guys

  • except that if you need to for example sight read the thing and your a properly trained musician, its easier to read if the quavers are grouped in the 3,3,2 pattern TheNewHierarchy is suggesting. BUT of course its not obligatory to score it according to convention. Depending on who you're scoring it for. Of course you'd be better to tab it and have no time indication whatsoever if you we're giving it to a guitarist who can read notation...

  • Yes, this video looks really creative!

  • Dense? That's simply what time I think it's in. It could be either 4/4 or 8/8, seeing as how they're both subdivided basically the same. Either one of us could be right. It would just make more sense to me if it were in 8/8. What I hear is: 1-+-a, 1-+-a, 1-+; 8/8. That's not complicated either, unless triplets are somehow difficult for you. But unless I saw the music on paper, I couldn't say with absolute certainty. I know what you're saying, and it makes complete sense as well. Stalemate?

  • What instrument do you play?

  • This video is brilliant. I absolutely love this band.

  • Damn, This Video Most Likely Took A LONG Ass Time To Make, It Would Of Pissed Me Off If I Were Them. It's Really Fuckin' Good.

  • long live the goats!!

  • Man, these guys sure like 8/8 time. They use it a lot on Heretic Pride, anyway.

    One-two-three, one-two-three, one-two... Haha.

Great song, and completely awesome video.

  • 8/8 time?? You mean 4/4 right??

One and two, and three and, four and.

THAT is how it is counted yo.

  • Well, 8/8 and 4/4 are essentially the same. It's just that 8/8 is an odd rhythm, like this. There are two compound beats (1-and-a, 1-and-a) and one simple beat (1-and). It divides into eight eighth notes, as 4/4 would, but it's counted differently.

  • 1,2,3?

    thats a waltz

if it only goes to 3 that makes it a waltz, there friend. :)

  • I wanna see the making of this video too.

    Really clever.

  • That video is fucking awesome.

  • These guys are fuckin' great.

  • i love everything about this band

and not because this is my first time hear a band like this because music is a big part of my life and i have a never ending reach in music. and i love eclectic music. I just love their unconventional lyrics in their songs even for eclectic music.

  • Best music video I have ever seen.

  • lol

  • It made me dizzy....

  • me too lol

  • is there a "making of" for this video somewhere?!

  • Surely there must be... that must have taken ages to do! *love it* xxxx

  • Comment removed

  • i'm still not sure about literal interpretations.

  • wat

  • im getting dizzy, and its awesome

  • I play this song and Heretic Pride when I'm driving...fucking amazing feeling.

  • Whoever does the videos for these guys is amazing some of the cinematography is, some of the most highly inventive I've seen in some time.

  • @IanHoesing Reminds me of the Salty Eyes clip by the Matches, think of the same typography like concept but with televisions :P

  • my god i love this freaking song waking up to it is the best thing ever

  • Dude, this video is totally rad!

the mountain goats are one of my very favourite bands

  • Just a great song. It always gets stuck in my head.

  • toppers

  • This is one of my new favorite songs =)

  • Brilliant Song!

  • Does any one know when a new CD is excepted out???

  • I love his face when he says "Yehahah!" at around 2:13

  • I adore this song and the Mountain Goats as a whole. Some sort of warm, pleasant sadness... x]

  • i see this as an anti war song and another great song from The Mountain Goats

  • The artistry in their music and this video is pure genius.

  • i love how this was made.

  • Also, if you have AudioSurf, this song is a fantastic choice. Just saying.

  • Hit me as a boring song to play. Is it actually a fun one on AS? I usually stick to more metal and industrial inclined songs for AS.

  • This song gets me so pumped. John Darnielle is, hands down, one of the best vocalists around.

  • I like dirt bikes.

  • He makes some of the most adorable faces when singing.

  • but when he says "ye-e-ah" he looks creepy.

  • Haha, that's my favorite part.

  • I believe this is the best band ever to walk to surface of the earth, i love The Mountain Goats so much!

  • wow this must have taken a long time to film, i love it

  • i love the music, and the video, but i have a little trouble with daniel's voice

  • Oh come on, that's like their whole sound! without his voice they wouldn't be the same.

  • hmmmmm. fair enough. i guess it takes a little while to get used to

  • This is the 100th comment.

    I deserve a prize.

  • You're amazing!

  • The actual sound is perhaps not my favorite, but the visual interpretation is fantastic. Very engaging! :)

  • Oh my goodness -- that video just blew me away! Such great visual and musical artistry. Truly breathtaking.

  • Come back to Australia John!!!!!!!

  • absolutely beautiful in every way.

they have such a unique sound, I love it!

    Yay

  • Can't wait to see them in September

  • excellent vid, but a little too quite. cant hear parts of it.

  • Oh come back to Australia, you mysteriously ill minstrels

  • great vid!!!nice!!

  • This video made me dizzy.

  • Great video, but what's up with spelling "harbour" with a "u"? They don't do that in North Carolina, dude.

  • they say forthcoming there all the time though

  • 'tis Uk English with a "u".... i.e. correct spelling :)

  • great tune.clever vid.love it...new 4 me...

  • I can't beat them down for it, with a healthy conscience, as the song is absolutely fantastic, but the style of the video is not, by any mean, original. Immortal Technique used this style of a video in his song, "tell the truth". Well done in both songs, though.

  • Well damn, and here I was thinking I was the only one who listened to Immortal Tech AND The Mountain Goats. Nice broad musical taste my friend.

  • You can't even begin to compare the two videos. Tell the Truth was just the lyrics animated on the computer, this was amazing camera work on real text as it followed the lyrics. This is infinitely more impressive.

  • but the concept is definitely the same in both videos, making the idea copied. the subtle difference doesn't make up for the fact that the idea, and thus the style, is the exact same. Both songs use the lyrics as the video, not the artists, or some plot

  • You are overgeneralizing it and that really takes away from the effort that was clearly put into the making of this video. You'd also have to be pretty ignorant to think that IT was the first to do lyrics following the song in a video. It's done different and better in this video, period.

  • I couldn't give a damn if I am taking anything away from the video. The fact is that the idea, although well done, is by no means original. Differently done, yes, but not truly better. It is definitely more complicated in its execution, but that does not make it better- in fact the complexity of the Lyrical presentation of the film takes away from the obvious work put into the lyrics themselves.

  • exactly, I made an extremely unprofessional video, using lyrical interpretation, without seeing either of the videos. It wasn't copied, it was just a concept. And, personally, I think Ace Norton did a great job with this video, it looks stunning.

  • This song is the sex

  • what a passionate man. I just watched this again and I can't get over Darnielle's facial expressions

  • Great video, but I gotta say some of his earlier, more manic songs deserves it more.

  • This just might be the best goddamn song I ever heard.

  • Great Video. Song was OK; it'll probably grow on me till it's one of my favorites though.

  • Wow with your intelligence I'm sure you get all the ladies.

  • toll, toll, toll!

  • its wicked

  • i watch this song al the time u cnat any bette rthen this =) =} =]

  • anyone know where i can find the lyrics for this song?

  • on the walls

  • More people should be thumbs-upping mathteamvids' comment. They were being facetious, how could they not be? And I realize nobody cares, but this is a social injustice nonetheless, so on this blessed day, I hereby thumbs-up mathteamvids' comment in the hopes that others will see the light and follow suit.

  • like the vid, love the song :]

  • idea for the video pwnz. very good song!!!

  • this video is incomprehensibly rad.

  • good to hear songs like this

  • I can't tell if this song is really deep and profound or SOUNDS deep and profound and really means nothing...

but it's an awesome song either way :D

  • John Darnielle is a genius.

  • sweet vid! thanks for posting. i love this song :)

  • REALLY cool video, but as far as the music is concerned not too much big a fan. sorry guys, just my opinion

  • Hey, don't be afraid to give your opinion. What don't you like about it?

  • i love this video.

i love how it emphasizes the lyrics.

i think that one of the best things about the mountain goats is that their lyrics are consistently fantastic.

  • not sure yet. its great, but i'll give it a few more spins.

  • Awesome song and video, but it's not all shot in one take. It's obvious, because during the first chorus John has nothing written on his shirt, and then after "sailors straggle back", he's there with text on his shirt. There's no way he can get changed in time.

  • The circular shots are projections on a screen, being recorded during the video.

  • That was awesome.

  • Bryce on drums!!!

  • I like the Mountain Goats. I find it a little rediculous that people who don't even like the band are coming into this video making fun of 'em. You're entitled to your opinion and everything, don't get me wrong, but come on - do you really have time to lurk and just sent insults? There's a big bright world outside with more productive things you could be doing out there.

    I'm just saying - it doesn't make sense. Don't like = don't listen.

  • Ohkay, well THAT was like... Awsome. Wonder how long it took the camera man to get all the words in the right order... ^_^

  • I really like this video, but it makes me feel really nauseated.

  • This really is an amazing video.

  • i typed in mounatin goats as a joke and found these guys... and there amazing. i should type in random shit more often.
