Some Minutemen fans always are harsh on Ed. It's a shame...Ed was a great singer and player. He ruled, and I wish fIREHOSE were still around. Who the hell else should they have played with? Ronnie James Dio?
you know, now that you mention it, i'd pay good money to see mike watt play with ronnie james dio. i bet they would do a ripping rendition of "the last in line".
I wish we could let him know with some kind of accolade. He's a bass hero to an entire generation. I always get the feeling he's still mourning D. Boon. Then Ron Asheton dies which was a full blown fuckin drag.
Astoundingly great band. Saw them in 1987 with X and Jerry Lee Lewis at the Universal Ampitheatre in Hollywood. I was blown away and saw them more than a dozen times. Incredible catalogue of music. Also saw them at McCabe's in Santa Monica -- acoustic. Watt, Ed, and George...what can you say? True greatness. The true "Watt-esque" flannel shirt has a diagonal pattern on the pockets that differs from teh rest of the shirt. A small detail, but crucial. Watt was way ahead of that grunge fashion.
I agree, Dennes rocked. I can say I was fortunate enough to see the minutemen live. Firehose pretty much rocked out also. They all deserve a frosty mug!
I haven't hit a Watt concert in a few years. I have been sick. But, I love how he would always, at the end of the show, just stand on the stage at the end and sell shirts/stickers and stuff. I could say howdy, and hit, and you rock dude! And give him some coin for a shirt.
How many big bands do you get to buy the shirt from the lead dude...
Even most local bands I know have their "buddies" selling the shirts.
flyin the flannel is a nice place to start. i was around when the minutemen were together. but never had much to listen to. didnt get there music around where i come from just on compilations and such. then when d.boon passed away and firehose formed iwas able to aquire alot of there music. anyway flyin the flannel is good also fromohio hope that helps you out peace
It's a great story. Ed Crawford was so into Minutemen that he drove from Ohio (hence, fROMOHIO) and made Watt and Hurley carry on. I don't know if it's true, but I thank him for it. I saw fIREHOSE every chance I could get...Bogart's...Palamino...here and there...over and over again. Good times.
I can verify the From Ohio part. I was introduced to Ed in columbus Ohio days before he left. He told me his plan to drive to CA to insist that the remaining Minutemen allow him to audition as their new guitar player/singer. I thought he was nuts. Nicely done, sir.
Not really, John Entwistle and Jack Bruce, who are 2 of Mikes biggest influences did. He's amazing though one of the best, definitely the best in punk and you should check them out if you don't know em too. Peace

"Flyin' The Flannel" was the soundtrack to my life during my senior year of high school. It's still one of my favorite albums ever.
