well they both invented melodeath since they both originate from Gothenburg. They didn't rip them off at all. i actually think that jesters dance is one of the best metal albums ever created...

unhallowed is there best album. And you can clearly tell that BDM listened to At The Gates a shit ton :-). When BDM first came out. I swear to God, they literally took the torch from At The Gates and carried it forward.

it's not that ATG pioneered anything, they were just really, really tight, fast and heavy for their time. they were the best band at the time for taking the wave of deat/hardcore coming out and perfecting it to a T. every song on that album was really sharp and to the point...they nailed every song and the ideas and song writing were very extremely precise. i wouldn't say they started anything, but they may have raised the bar in terms of being fast/brutal and musical at the same time...genius
"it's not that ATG pioneered anything" i have to disagree with you. it's a fact that they are one of the three bands - besides In flames and Dark Tranquility- who have invented melodeath.
ya I guess you could consider in flames and darktranquiilty to be part of that but look at which band is most copied in its sound and production... slaughter of the soul had such a modern metal sound that bands of even today are still after. those bands are somewhat similar in style but SOTS by ATG was like a well oiled machine...they perfected the fast thrasy (slayer) beat to slow double bass rhythms... other melodeath bands didn't have such a mechanical sound.
At the Gates pioneered the Gothenburg sound. Death and Napalm Death aren't the only ones by the way, if you want to be cool and underground you shouldn't ignore bands like Possessed, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Nihilist, Deicide and so forth.
I'd say Carcass were the inventors of Melodeath with their Heartwork album. They pretty much created the Gothenburg sound - whilst being from Liverpool.
Well, they had an influence which cannot be overestimated for the melodic death metal sound... But saying they played the 'Gothenburg' sound is going too far if you ask me, they didn't have enough drama in their music - it was still all aggression, hate and evil.
12 years will do that to you. martin looks the most similar to himself then. The drummer adrian looks totally different than then. It's a shame they couldn't get the bjorlers in.
At the Gates is what "Gothenburg metal" should always sound like! Slaughter of the Soul is no doubt the best "Gothenburg metal" album that has and will ever been released!
