  • This is a rare performance where an American female singer appears to perform with an foriegn female singer who is more politically right-wing than her. Joan is politically on the left while Nana maybe on the political center-right. And that was why Joan Baez was one of my favorite pop music stars when I attended Bartlett High in Anchorage, AK. And I was just like her in high school!!!

  • Uau, That´s really nice. Thank both of you

  • I can't decide which one is best! :) Wonderful duo.

  • Thank you so much for posting!

  • Class and more Class

Voices from Heaven... any words out of any language cannot do justice to this performance... thanx for posting...

  • Beautiful music ! Beautiful songs ! Beautiful voices ! Forever youngs ! Thank you !

  • So good it gives me goosebumps!

  • A goddess and a goddess supreme. It's enough to make me faint.

  • Too bad the sound quality is not the greatest. Otherwise a great duet!

  • Another wonderful singer - the mighty Joan Baez.

  • Oh my, I have never heard them together before. Fabulous!

  • Come on, this song is the French version of the song "I want to live" by Demis Roussos

  • @moustaki According to Wikipedia, Paisir d'amour was written in 1780 and arranged for orchestra in 1859. I don't think Roussos is quite old enough to have composed this.

  • Beautiful!

  • Two divine voices meet and angelic music occurs.

  • Parfait !

  • June 2011: French press announces that Joan and Nana will do a duet (most probably "Here's to you") on Nana's upcoming new album of duets. Scheduled release is November 2011...

  • @thewind01 WHAT???? Let the good memories be good memories!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol, I like how she gets like totally lost on the guitar, yet they both pull it off cause they're pros :)

  • Deux grandes professionnelles avec une talent fou.

  • I love both these ladies, but never heard this recording before, it is stunning!

  • Had the guitar had nylon string, it could have been better music background. But anyway the atmosphere was great. That's matter most there.

  • I love them so much

    Thnx 4 sharing

  • I think seven people fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the dislike button. What's not to like? it's pure and innocent on all levels.

  • Talent Talent Talent Talent -OVERFLOW from both of them

Such talented artists that can improvise so beautifully and how modest Nana is like she does not want to sing but to hum for Joan - this is so so so modest from Nana shows such respect to Baez

    Beautiful, truly and movingly beautiful

  • @LohengrinT

the way they harmonize with each other and float through the chord progressions is amazing

  • and to prove that - nana is singing at a higher register and emphasized herself on certain parts of the song

  • even if there was a lack of microphones, i do not think that nana was 'blown' by joan's voice OR restraining herself. She is HARMONIZING with Joan in this song!

  • Son maravillosas las dos.

  • You are all respective singers!

  • OMG!!! What an incredible video!!!! Thank you so much for posting.

I saw Joan Baez last year and of course, she doesn't sing like this anymore, but she is still beautiful and talented... as to Nana, I have stumbled upon some amazing recording of hers. I grew up in France where she was popular but I never really knew the extent of her talent. Thank you so, so much for posting this gem.

  • Nana Joan !!!!!!!!!

  • Too Beautiful^^♪♪

  • very very nice,ok

  • a lot of "la-la-ing" forgot the lyrics, hey?

  • Magnífica mezcla de estas dos grandes de la música cantando a duo

  • And some asses are in the Senate now. JFKerry

    Je aime la ' l'amour.

  • absolutly utterly beautiful,my 2 best ever favourite singers

  • joans voice is like cotton...nanas voice is pure silk...

  • lovely video and fantastic voices

  • ¡Oh que lindo!

  • The pleasure of love lasts only a moment The pain of love lasts a lifetime. I gave up everything for ungrateful Sylvia, She is leaving me for another lover. The pleasure of love lasts only a moment, The pain of love lasts a lifetime. "As long as this water will run gently Towards this brook which borders the meadow, I will love you", Sylvia told me repeatedly. The water still runs, but she has changed. The pleasure of love lasts only a moment, The pain of love lasts a lifetime.
  • Nana is true human being and graciously talented lady.

  • I adore them both god bless them

thank you very much for this video

  • That Joan is always trying to out sing everybody.

  • Goose Bumps!

  • I have to agree, Nana has a far softer voice than Joan's, that's how she is, so it is unfair to make comparisons regarding strength. A good performance, although I would have thought Joan, being an established folk artiste, would have already known the chords to 'Plaisir D'Amour', what with it being a highly popular folk song, but I suppose that's just me nitpicking :-)

  • Awesome! TY.

  • I am so impressed by this duet: two legends! Voices are so good. This is so interesting to have this part of the concert available on the web. Thank you so much!

  • They're So Good! I Love it.

  • I wish i could be there, among the crowd.. unique moment..

  • im never bored of hearing this.

  • They had the very similar style of singing, it just downed to me that Nana might

    have been Joan's singing model.

  • Awesome video of a great vocal combination. They could have sung a whole album together, but this is anyway a gem that sparkles.

  • Apicella impari da queste due comuniste!

  • @masskrug42 concordo pienamente!

  • What a treat to listen to Max, two special voices, so lovely to listen to.

    Thankyou so much for posting

    S*T*A*R*S*

    Bleesings

  • Quelle agreable surprise que de retrouver Joan Baez(que mon pere ecoutait)et Nana Mouskouri chantant ensemble!J'apprecie leur choix:"Plaisir d'amour".

    Greetings from Yokohama,Japan.

  • Two of my favorites together! Doesn't get better than this!

  • Nicde to see them singing together.

  • nice :) versatile and pro!

  • Due grandi voci, due grandi personaggi.

  • Are microphones so expensive back then?

  • no, this was at the very end of the evening, and it was unplanned, thus the lack of a 2nd microphone.

  • @fayekeene

... and Joan Baez was hogging it too. Loved her voice, her politics, her talent... but by goodness I'd not have wanted to share a stage or anything else with her.

Brilliant ad lib though. Such talent between them.

rutebeuf2 - I agree with your comments on Nana not being 'blown' away. It's Joan's song and Nana's harmonising perfectly on something unrehearsed, that's not easy.

Thanks so much for sharing this gem.

  • @fayekeene Actually this is a technique. Musch bluegrass harmony uses three voices and one mic.

  • dont spoil the entertainment by putting your details over the video.

  • This is not unlike a female version of a Three Tenors concert. The beauty of sound is ravishing.

  • Magnifique!

  • Thanls for sharing! I know I've said that many time, but I'll say that again! The beauty of Nana is INCREDIBLE!

  • je les adore. Waouh!

  • These are the best voices in America

and quite possibly in the universe also

  • Nana Mouskouri is angel, I'm absolutely sure about that!

  • Ces deux femmes ont des voix superbes! Merci du partage! Bisous! Anne

  • This video should be banned. It's too beautiful for words. Each singer, by herself, would blow me away, but when the two sing together, it's completely overpowering.

  • Voices of two Angels, I was so happy to stumble on this video. Thank you Girls. It made my day.

    Bravo!!!!

    Ron from Canada!

  • I love to transcribe music

  • They are so cute! Like little friends! Very beautiful when they sing together even if Joan Baez is (for me ) the best of the both. <3

  • Voice of Angels...

    Elles sont magnifiques.

  • Nana has only one vocal cord that works...check this in Wikipedia...amazing...

  • two greats in the music world. with a little practice together they could put on one heck of a great show!

  • Eternamente Nana

  • What the contact !!!!! Magestic time !!!!

  • Lucky us, they sang togeather. We get to listen. Yea!!!

  • How perfect to hear two consumate professionals tackling this delicate song. Joan blows Nana away with the very strength of her voice, and I think Nana acknowledges this.

  • i wouldn't quite use the word 'blow'. My spin is that Nana has always shown more restraint and vocal control than most singers, and never tries to upstage anyone.

  • @rutebeuf2 Couldn't agree more.

  • @rutebeuf2 I agree that Nana would not try to upstage anyone, but do think that Joan's voice is simply stronger, based on their individual performances.

  • @rutebeuf2 I agree totally with you. She is the best of all. She is an angel in earth.

  • Observer (?),

    YOU ARE TRIPPIN.

When they sing Plasir, Baez forces Nana to the front and tilts the mike in Nana's direction. Joan lets Nana open and then sing the bridge solo and dampens her own vocie considerably. Its obvious to any OBJECTIVE observer that Nana is in awe of the mighty JB. Joan is the ONLY singer that I have seen sing without a mike ( at least 5 different shows) in concert and I have seen Ella, Sarah, Aretha, Carmen, Patti, Gladys, Chaka, Judy, etc etc.

    OPEN YOUR EYES

  • Comment removed

  • you observed nothing here! you feel tons jealousy though, observer. ms nana is rightly in awe of the the once in a liftetime VOICE of Joan Baez.

Baez has never been a show off singer, often avoiding using her full rang to suit the song. She even let's Nana sing the high part here. You are the ONLY one on here who has expressed this delusional opinion of the Saint Joan. I have NEVER seen or heard of her behaving like a diva.

I suggest you change your name to FEEL GREEN with ENVY585.

  • I've been to five Nana Mouskouri concerts where she's sung without a microphone or band to back her.

My suspicion is that you lack the objectivity that you wish the previous commenter had adopted.

First, cast the mote from your own eye.

  • thanks, Limpandtotheleft, for the information.

I never got to see Nana live, although I love many of her recordings. Another point in the fans' Diva Competition is that Nana is several years older than JB. At this point JB's voice is much weaker also.

  • @taddyd1 you are right!!!!

  • @JuneJune1950 Life is not a competition or comparison in some things. Which of your children do you love the most?- It would be foolish to even consider answering that question. It was a lovely performance from 2 exceptional singers with different but equally beautiful voices which blended well together. An Orange does not try to be an Apple nor should it.. some prefer Oranges and some Prefer Apples. Enjoy your preference but understand it's subjective.

  • @JuneJune1950 Joan was closer to the mic.

  • @JuneJune1950

No Joan has a higher and stronger voice but Nana has a more melodious one and great voice control; let's face it; Nana and Joan were the two greatest women folk singers of the 20th century.

  • @RPenta I think judith durham is as good.

  • The most beautiful voices.

  • Looks like a spur of the moment thing to me. I think they did just fine with one mike. The guys at the end there didn't even spoil the moment. I love the way Nana' s voice soars and Joan stops playing and the harmony is sublime.

  • they are both so sweet with fantastic voices and are so different than the freeks we see nowadays...

  • Should have had two microphones on one stand.

These are BOTH two talented artists of EQUAL stature!

  • Nana's so sweet ha ha!

  • If you like this song, check out BZN. This dutch band covered this song also very beautifull. On youtube: BZN Plaisir d'amour

  • Golden meoments ..forever to be etched in one's memory..Viva

  • Awesome! Brava! Brava!

  • Nana, eres una Diosa de la canción

  • I love this ladies! they are with me all along my maturity.

  • Yes both this lady is keeping me happy on my childhood and along with adolescant vigour and mature lust :-)

  • Deux anges chante.........

  • Far from perfect music, but lovely moment, thank you so much for posting.

Nana's music was illegal in Greece 67-74, when US got military to take over so US could set up lots of bases there, which the Greek people objected to. Sort of like Afghanistan.

  • Why was Nana's music illegal in Greece?

What did the music have to do with the military engagement? Weird.

  • Not so weird, really. She sang and recorded Mikis Theodorakis songs. Look up my darling hero.

Now in his 80s, at a recent concert benefit for people who lost everything in the forest fires of 07, when he sang Sto Perigiali, people stood, sang, cried, cheered, because this was so important to them. It wasn't even one of his wonderful anthems to resistance.

It was what Greeks dared sing at the funeral march of the poet who wrote the words.

  • (1/2) Mikis Theodorakis - Athens concert, Sept. 2007 second half

Interesting, when I was posting this, I got Baez singing la la la where have all over Sto Perigiali, how amazing!

  • Wow...amazing sound and texture...their harmony is phenomenally perfect.

  • the tears are runing down my face as i write this a beautifull song by to beautifull voices

  • Two wonderful ladies with the most magical voices and such a beautiful song - I enjoyed watching the interaction and body language/eye contact between these two wonderful ladies.

  • What also amazes me it's that small guitar Joan playin', if hands speak Nana voice fullfill love still both soprano crash both grap highness secnd of music talent. Only my foolish opinion (B-p)

  • the power of tendreness is stronger

    than everything.

  • These ladies sound fantastic together - Thanks for posting this>

  • "I like this type of music. It's pretty, sweet, and sentimental." It is beautiful, beautiful folk music. :)

  • I don't know about today or tomorrow but, to my way of thinking, this is MUSIC!

  • Well, "toiletholder" I do only partly agree with you. You're right, there's music made for fun which isn't either romantic or sentimental, and that's ok. But when you, but when you emphasize sophistication as an element connoting "real music" I'm sorry, but I just can't agree. In most cases sophistication is a way to show one's extravagant ability to compose and/or play pieces which 90 % of the times are spoiled of the music's soul and that isn't music at all. I'd say, experiments in progress.

  • Two wonderful ladies, two lovely songs...

probably should be "will they (we?) never learn?" though...

  • Joan is great as ever!

  • Joan is great as always, I would say, but not without adding that Nana Mouskouri with her soaring hauntingly beautiful notes showed once again that she is one of the two or three greatest female singers in the world . No, that's not quite correct, as it is sexist!! Let me try again. Nana Mouskouri is one of the finest singers in the world , period !!! I've been to her concerts and gasped in wonder at her range and note perfect beautiful voice, so two legends, two towering giants of music & song

  • ..riconcilia con la vita... l'amore esiste..... Es

  • sooooooo sweet.

  • Plasir d'amour was composed by Martini in 1780

  • Ohhh.... EXQUISITE. Thank you for posting this.

  • brilliant compared to today s rubbish whats going on with music people with no talent whatsoever

  • If you think that music today is "rubish" you have your head so far up ur ass u wouldn't know good music if it hit you in the head. Obviously there is going to be bad music today, but there is also an incredible amount of incredibly inovative and new music which ur obviously looking over

  • I like this type of music. It's pretty, sweet, and sentimental. But I wouldn't call music that is not pretty, sweet and sentimental bad. I think that people have a habit of thinking older means better (which I find is true alot of the time, but hardly all of the time) or that so called "beautiful" music (sweet gentle music like this) is "real" music. Most people who'd refer to this as "real" music are really only refering to how the song's aesthetic affects them, not it's sophistication.

  • In fact Plasir d'Amour is a pretty unsophisticated song. It's very straight forward sounds like any Catholic/Anglican hymn.

  • I dearly love classical and old cultural music but (please don't hurt me) there's a lot of new music today that I like, generally in the indie/alternative scene. A lot of it is energetic, but if you like calm music maybe you could check out Ben Folds Five, Keane, or something, try expanding the range of your music tastes, don't just write it all off even if it's not your cup of tea.

But I came here for the music, not to blab about what I listen to, yea this is a powerful gentle song.

  • Que placer escucharlas, son grandiosas, amo este video

  • two of my favourite female vocalists of all time.

    thanks for the video

  • Lovely Nana and Joan greatly influenced this young artist from Wales.

    Add her name too.

  • Oh for goodness sake fancy this we used to love all this music in my generation still lovely too.

Thankyou for sending it to me Max.

    Carol x 5*

  • These two ladies are really and truly first class artists and singers. If I had been in thier place, I could not have sang with people running around the stage placing additional microphones, etc. But did you see that? It did not bother them at all. They continued singing as if nothing was happening.

Only true artists can do that.

  • So I'm listening to Nana on Youtube tonight and she's sung in French, German, Greek, Italian and English so far.

How many other languages can she sing in perfectly?

  • So far I know of her singing in: French, German, Greek, Italian, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Latin, Hebrew, Dutch, Corsican.

  • And Romanian

  • That is the truth....... two Angels singing.

Life is beautiful...... Angels are still around us.

  • Oh, it's so nice. Thanks.Good video!

  • Joan Baez is my big favourite female singer and Nana is also one of my favourites. To see them singing together and having much fun together makes me happy. Only all those names on the video takes me away from the picture and the song.

  • tja wat moet ik hiervan zeggen???

  • Wow -what a gift to see this. I LOVE YouTube!

  • Wonderful!

Great video! Rare and valued sweet one!

    Thank you for posting this.

One upon a days in 1970, I attended Mary Hopkin's Live at Osaka, Japan, where Mary opened her concert with this song as same as this clip, French-English-English!

  • Very Valuable & Memorable VideoClip !

  • Yes, indeed.

    Two angels singing....

  • Two angels singing. Thanks for posting.

  • Two leyends...... how beautiful!

    Thanks for sharing !

  • maravilhoso,simplesmente belo

  • C'est incroyable comment ma mère ressemble à Nana ! :D

Mais ahlala, c'est tellement beau... Mais le plaisir de l'amour peut durer toute une vie aussi ! Ayons confiance !

  • it`s so sweet how Nana Mouskouri gets uneasy around joan..I think I would faint if given a chance to sing with Joan...amazing duet, their voices mingle together perfectly...

  • beautiful, ty for posting

  • I wish we saw more duets with Nana, she is able to complement so many voices and still be distinct. Her duets with Mercedes Soza and Jullio Iglasias (not my favourite singer at all) on her Latina album are stunning. Love Joan Baez too.
