  • This is an awesome version of the song! For a very well done remake check out Justin Townes Earle version. Outstanding too!

  • Holy smokes, never heard this version and I can now honestly say Im a better person for it!!.....lookout now, Ima gonna find somebody to hug..

  • Replacements are timeless. See your high and lonesome...I'm weeping.

  • the tones of this song summon the soul

  • I LOVE this song!

  • so damn underrated

  • No fucking horns! Yes, this is the definitive version.

  • it sucks that such a great band had to bring crappy religion into their music. I still like the sound, looses the god crap.

  • @dillinger9999 Fuck you God is good, I'm not a religious freak but I'm Catholic!!!!!!!!!

  • @SrvSlash69 really troll?? suck my fucken balls bitch. i dont give two cents worth of shit what superstitious crap UR into really just make a fucken post and stop bugging people who are intelligent enough to know better. UR all "ooh look at me ima catholic blah blah blah guilt guilt guilt," fuck god fuck you fuck jesus fuck UR mom UR kids UR wife or UR gay husband. speaking a gay is UR pedophile priest against gay marriage? its people like you who make life suck. SO FUCK YOU!

  • @dillinger99 HOLY SHIT SORRY MY LITTLE BROTHER GOT ON MY ACCOUNT, NO JOKE! SORRY HE DID THAT HE'S REALLY ANNOYING!

  • @SrvSlash69 no worries

  • i hate trolls and i think the same about religious gay marriage stuff too but please dont talk bad about my beliefs, i dont care if our atheist or jew thats your belief not mine

  • @SrvSlash69 WHO picked you out & said something about what you believe in? did you even read what my very first post was? "Is religion far more harmful than it's worth? Calling out Religion as a roadblock to scientific, moral, and political progress that oppresses people on terms of race, beliefs, and gender. I’m against all belief systems that stand in the way of social progress and world peace, stating that religion is not a necessary element to solid moral values and peace of mind.

  • @dillinger9999 hey sorry man your right, lets take out all this religious stuff and just listen to some music made by a guy how knows what he is talking about, opinions should not be fought about and i didnt read everything you said your right, sorry and im not into weird stuff, i didnt even go to mass today, so i just want to say sorry and forget about it

  • @SrvSlash69 its good brother

  • @dillinger9999 Relax. Westerberg was raised Catholic. He's never been overtly religious, but if some "god crap" spills into the lyrics of arguably his finest work, I have no problem with it.

  • @ih8music F U you relax shit face...keep ur comments to ur self fucken troll its still god crap and it sucks i love this band to bad it has god crap in it..damn freaken trolls just cant let some one post something...

  • @dillinger9999 Your profile says you're 39, yet somehow you act like you're one third that age. Oh well, silly me for trying to have a dialogue. Keep enjoying yourself and the wonderful anonymity of the internet.

  • @ih8music im sick of people trolling me shit i cant make a statement without someone going after me. Religion is horrible & insipid and why ruin music by putting it UR music. I like the replacements always have and it sucks to have put it there end of it.....make a post and leave it that just like i did! but oh no!! dont say what you really think coz it will offend people!!! Im so sick of that somethings really need to be exposed for the true horror it is.

  • @dillinger9999 Grow up.

  • @Batman8657 this coming from a tool with a name of batman (stupid) stop fuckin trolling.

  • @dillinger9999 Your unprovoked militant atheist verbal rampage exposes you as the troll here, not me. Please tell me that you're not actually 39 years old. I'm not even religious and people like you annoy the shit out of me.

    Again, grow up.

  • @Batman8657 look batfag you piece of shit i made one little post and i get trolled. You trolled me I didnt pick you out and troll you. So get you daddy's cock outa your mouth & learn what troll really means cock breath. and awww do i annoy you? go eat a bowl of dick up FAGOT.

  • @dillinger9999 You got "trolled," you pompous imbecile, because of your left-field, unprovoked dime-a-dozen dig at religion. Yeah, you're so enlightened and have to tell the world about it. You and a million other disrespectful little idiots. There's zero reason for it in this instance. For the third time - grow the fuck up, you child. Nobody's impressed with you. If you don't want to get "trolled," don't be a fucking idiot.

You idiot. LOL if you're really 39 years old. Loser.

  • @Batman8657 YES Batpussy i am way smarter than you. what are you like fucking 12 13? you started this and i can tell you that you would never say this shit to my face. its pieces of shit like you who hid behind their computers to pick out some random person online to pick a fight with. I would smash you IRL. and for you info I am not an atheist. im through arguing with a person who has a mind of a child. im blocking you see ya

  • @dillinger9999 Yeah, there's definitely something wrong with you. I'll bet you'd "smash" me IRL, internet tough guy.

    Fucking dork.

  • @ih8music and if you see my very very first post it was short and then I got blasted!! and that just really pisses me off so bad..really I just wanted to make a statement and thats that....

  • @dillinger9999 and I simply brought up the point that Westerberg was raised catholic so it shouldn't be a shock that the word "Jesus" is in his vocabulary. And, *most importantly*, this is hardly a religious song, and Westerberg is hardly a religious songwriter. Really, you're freaking out over one phrase in a song that has absolutely nothing to do with religion... once again, relax.

  • @ih8music plus that line is one of the best lines ever written in a rock n roll song.

  • @dillinger9999 ur a fucking weirdo

  • @schug93 stop trolling

  • There should be a love button.

  • @bobbyrawson i agree there should be. nice post dude

  • @dillinger9999 my best youtube epiphany yet, haha!

  • so that movie "can't hardly wait" is definitely loosely based on this song. awesome!

  • ya, im good with that too!

  • Music could end after this and that'd be alright with me.

  • I'll be home when I'm sleeping

    I can't hardly wait.

  • Comment removed

  • One of my favourite bands is the Gaslight Anthem and they have stated that The Replacements were a big influence. But now I think The Replacements are one of my favourite bands all of a sudden.

  • @120Vanquish120 Good catch. Worked the other way around for me: Replacements>>>>GLA.....but then, I am like as old as Bono and Sting.

  • @ttraynor1 Makes sense due to age gap. Gaslight's music speaks to me more than the Replacements'. But they have said there wouldn't be the Gaslight Anthem without the Replacements. So i guess I have them to thank for my favourite band. Still, two fantastic bands.

  • This song is top 3 for me. His voice in incredible!

  • Where is this version from?

  • @misfitsboy123 This is from the Pleased To Meet Me sessions bootleg that's been circulating for ages. It's an early studio cut of the song that Jim Dickinson used to map out the later addition of horns. That's likely him playing the keyboard pieces here where the horns were later added.

  • damn, this song just seems to get better with the years doesn't it?

  • This song is simply wunderbar !!!

  • Yeah gotta love the Replacements. Often times I think they could have accomplished more but there is still a solid collection of songs they put out. Westerburg continued on to put out some great stuff out too.

  • i love this song so very much

The pause then the Horns kill me every time!

  • great fucking movie as well as awesome song. if you havent seen it see cant hardly wait, you wont regret it

  • No, that song is called "One O' Three Saturday Morning." It was a side project of his. I got it on vinyl.

  • @ ducati; yes, so true....! i'm 40 and "just" stumbled over them, when i was 20 years old.... such a great band, great music and great lyrics....!

i just hope to see paul westerberg live one day x

    x

  • @hollapalooza70

Saw em in 89 ( I think) in Houston.

    Fantastic show!

  • Yep, it's a good one.

  • R.I.P. Jim Dickinson. A great man and producer, this of course being a fine example of his work.

  • Click on my channel to hear the usual version!

  • This is hands down my favorite Replacements song along with I will dare.

  • Happy 50th Paul!

  • Sounds like they're going to bust into 96 Tears at any moment. Cool version!

  • Love this song, love the 'Mats.

    Happy Birthday, belated, Mr Westerberg.

See you at the C.C., eh?

  • One of my favorite songs. and also, (don't hate me) but the best teen movie ever made!!!! I swear! (just watch it drunk and high with subtitles, I swear, it's sooooooooo good!)

  • @AloneInNewPollution

Every time I hear this song I seriously get chills. It makes me feel like I am going 45 miles an hour on an open highway with on one else on the road and the sun is setting. Just as I explain this I still get chills.... I seriously seriously love this song.

  • @ColorsBright

also this song reminds me of the feeling of "good company" being friends or family or whatever.. just the feeling of being loved and wanted.. gives me that warm feeling inside.. like chocolate chip cookies.

  • @ColorsBright I know exactly how you feel. Do you ever listen to "Unsatisfied" by the Replacements. That song is a driving , sunny day song. You should hardly wait to hear it,.lol

  • @ColorsBright You get chills going 45 miles an hour'? I recommend getting checked for anemia.

  • @ColorsBright You drive 45 on the highway? I didn't know grandpas listened to the replacements! (just teasing)

  • And I thought only "Grandpas" listened to the Mats. I listen to the Mats. I'm old. (But I do drive 70)

  • happy birthday Paul, mine was yesterday. and i hope you have a better one then i did

  • What price genius?

"I'll be home when I'm sleeping..."

    Damn.

  • perhaps my favorite Mats tune. This or Regular or Skyway or Bastards of Young or Left of the Dial- er there are too many gems to select just one good Westerberg song. "Can't Hardly Wait" clearly approaches perfection.

  • The greatest song ever written.

  • @7777srd word.

  • This is my second favorite version after the horns version. It's cool to have so many versions of one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time to enjoy : )

  • Comment removed

  • okay, the PTMM version had horns, and this one has synths. is there a version with just heavy guitars?

  • yeah, the version from Tim. Different lyrics too.

  • What's the name of the song?

  • yeah there is

  • Ive heard this, the horns version and the Tim version. This song is just beyond words.

  • lyrics are amazing...just how young was paul?

  • If Wikipedia is to be believed, Paul would've been about 28 when he did this version of the song, though there's demos of it from as far back as 1985, when he would've been about 26.

  • Umm ok.......thanks for sharing.

You know what they say, everything happens at 27.

  • love to play with my dog with this one...or to sing it while i walk through the downtown of mexico city....great song boys and girls....

  • I'm the 88,888th Viewer. haha

  • I'm just glad there is more than one version to love!

  • What about the "Shit HIts the Fans" version? That was the first/best/.

  • The horns version is on Pleased to Meet Me. Why don't you just go buy it?

There's a bunch of alternate versions of this available. I think the best one is on the expanded Pleased to Meet Me released this past year. It's not this version, but like this version, it doesn't have the horns. It also has different lyrics that I prefer.

The expanded version of Tim has an early version with Bob Stinson still on guitar and an acoustic version of the song.

  • I like the horns version better, wish i could find it on here but this version doesn't suck either.

  • Hey kids- immediately buy "Let It Be" and you will be so happy! Hurry!

  • Where can I get the MP3 for this version? Amazon can't find it, and this is better than the "horns" version.

  • both versions rock; i like the cheesy horns, but the grit of the original is rootsier...does that word exist? mats!

  • If you like this song you should check out the cover done by Justin Townes Earle. He's Steve Earle's son and he's damn good!

  • Anyone ever see them at the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington Vt around 1988? I would kill for that recording...

  • I saw em' in 1988 in Burlington- my first 'real' concert. Most bands sound like crap in that auditorium but hosting the 'Mats there was perfect-

  • I saw that show--it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I still remember most of Paul's funny comments to the audience. I wonder if there is a recording out there somewhere.

  • the trumpet version is gayay. The Tim version is extra sexy

  • Comment removed

  • Have'nt you heard the version on All for Nothing/Nothing for All, with Bob? That's the Tim version most well known among the mats fans.

But I still prefer the CHW in The Shit Hits the Fans than the rest.

    Peace <3

  • yes, there's a tim version. the song was supposed to be on "tim" but was left off, as most of the alex chilton-produced stuff was. from the mats' abbreviated sessions with chilton, only "left of the dial" made it to the album. chilton played one of the guitar parts on the PTMM version.

  • This version had a third of a second of violin at 1:33, and at 2:11 too. That's dangerously gay too, don't you think? I mean, flaming.

    Asshat.

  • you're a fucking dumpling.

  • the replacements are the best old band that i know there AWSOME!!!

  • ive never heard this song with the violin. only the one with the trumpets. i like the trumpets better.. haha

  • I have a version with trumpet instead of violin, i like the sound a bit better with the trumpet.

  • some of the best lyrics ever...

    Jesus rides beside me

    He never buys any smokes

    awesome!

  • Agreed! This song touches anyone with this particular lyric, but Paul's raspy voice pushes it over the cliff and you can't help but choke up when you hear it.

  • Can anyone get some more Replacements videos .. this one is a great song and Paul is not drunk .. yes the SNL version was great and was on Tube for a while until the bastard record companies too it away. A part of me died ..well it was a nail in the coffin .

  • they keep pulling them

  • If it wasn't for WMG we wouldn't have musicians with enough money to make a fucking studio album. I know it sucks, but it's for the best.

  • record companies are dying though, there are too many self signed and self promoting bands breaking into the mainstream nowadays

  • One of the catchiest guitar licks ever recorded, banging drums, and when the violin kicks in at 1:30? Icing on the cake. You just have to love lyrcs like "Ash-tray floors, dirty clothes, and filthy jokes."

  • amen.

  • SNL version with the shout of "Burt Reynolds" is the most

  • The SNL version IS fantastic. It captures pure joy.

  • i agree, very amazing

  • Fucking amazing song.

  • Stop pulling all these great Replacements videos WMG!!

  • WMG sucks Ass! I've lost so many cool vids because of those licentious motherfuckas!

  • The acoustic version is brilliant

  • haha that's humorous, i lovvvve this song

  • intresting track. The only thing better than the mats is a really cool girl who loves the mats. Which is hard to find in Connecticut.

  • I have always loved these guys...for most of my life and I'm a girl :)

  • you have good taste SonofMommy. WHere were you 8years ago?

  • Being a mom and listening to great music :D

  • I approve of these messages :)

  • isn't there another version with horns or sax instead of strings??

  • That's the album version from Pleased to Meet Me.

  • Cheers man, I played this at the bar last night. It was this or Merry-go-round. heh awesome. I'd like to think I know my music (I love 80's and early 90's punk) and a ton of indie stuff. I think in general though nowadays and there just isn't your signature popular band anymore that is just really great.

U2 is probably the closest but I really only liked their first few albums. I Can't Hardly Wait though to hear Westerburg's first solo here that was awesome "World Class Fad" wins.

  • awesome song

  • This is an amazing version...thanks for posting!

  • this is a great song i love it

  • Wow! Stripped down naked beauty!

  • sweet tune love this song!

  • that's why I lov'em! what cool tune!

  • maybe not ..hehe

  • no no the movie is singles ...with matt dillion ...from like 1992 with alice in chains best soundtrack maybe ever..

  • I've heard an acoustic version of this. it was a really low quality recording copied from an old tape, and wierdly that sort of makes it awesome. the best way to describe it is to say that it sounds like a cassette is being haunted by the ghost of an amazing rock band.

  • paul westerberg es bueno como solista pero es mejor en replacements

  • What he said.

  • this is great song

  • The version of this tune on the All for Nothing compilation is better than the CD version.

  • Agreed.

  • true that mabey the best true mats ture

  • I also am with you on this. The best I ever saw it performed though was on SNL

    "Burt Reynolds!" lol

  • I still have that performance on VHS haha. It does have the best version of Can't Hardly Wait (with Josh Freese pounding on drums) as well as a killer version of Knockin' On Mine.

  • Is there any way you could post that video long enough for me to copy it? I LOVE that version, and would be eternally grateful to see it again...

  • Ardent Studios in Memphis has one of the few original Mellotron keyboards in the world and I am guessing that keyboardist/producer Jim Dickinson played it on this basic track.

  • Great song .. great movie

  • What Movie Was This From. Can't remember I gots CRS. Cool tune though

  • the movies called Can't Hardley Wait

  • I just found out that this song (one of my favorite Mats' tunes) is on the soundtrack for He's Just Not That Into You.

  • WILL SOMEONE PLSE POST "16 Blue" [the lp cut..jesperson..someone come on plse]

  • their best version of the song was on a tape called "the shit hits the fan." it was a live tape that was released and had typical mats performances (where they sounded like a high school cover band). suddenly, they break into this original song (much faster and harder than the studio version) with all different lyrics (I don't think they were even completed at the time) and you go, "wow, what a songwriter!" I remember the song was stuck in my head for months after hearing that tape.

  • This was the best shit they did after TIM and is ideal travelling music for like minded piss ants and drunken anarchists.

  • great...what happened to the SNL clip of this song...where is my angel?

  • I have to agree,I like this version better and I'm FROM the Replacements era. Thank God we had them to counterbalance the Valley Girl bullshit!

  • I agree both o f the SNL songs were stellar

  • Love Love Love. And this is me, John Cronin. Please keep it here.

    JC

  • This is really nice, better than the version on Pleased To Meet Me, and on par with the Tim version... Anyone know where I can find this version?

  • I actually prefer this version too. Reminds me of very early gin blossoms (dusted era)

  • ...And they were so much better than the gin blossems

  • i think i like this version better than the version on the Soundtrack.
