Does anyone else think that Aston Martin should start making DB5s again so that people can have a classic (with modern safety stuff)? They are fantastic looking cars and I want one!
I think Jaguar and Aston Martin should re-vive these two cars, only I hope that they stay true to the style and use the same proportions as the original car. Similar to what ford did with their Ford GT. Making these cars pass federal crash standards is fairly easy seeing as how long the hood (or Bonnet for you gentlemen) of both cars. Wouldn't be a problem sticking a horizontal bar of steel on the inside to act as a bumper, with a polyurethane front clip. Just like the the c3 Vettes.
@FANADICALCOWHEAD Think of the modern day cost to produce them. I don't think they'd get a good enough return on them (Jaguar or Aston)
The long bonnet of the etype for example, doesnt make it easy to make safe. the engine going into the passenger compartment is more likely. it would need far too much strengthening to make safe whilst retaining looks (or even changing them slightly) and too much weight makes bad handling.
.. I've had British cars... they're designed for 25 MPH in congested cities... they needed a new engine and transmission every 25,000 miles when driven on USA highways... just replace with an American engine and transmission and electrics and be done with it...
@BuzzLOLOL You are so wrong and by your statement i guess you have never had a British car,You cant compare American cars to British Cars as British cars are superior. This is of course my opinion i have only owned 1 american car and driven a few american cars.I have owned many British cars so you could say iam biased.

@2girls1freak Hahaha You are so ignorant.Britain,Italy,Germany and France have and always built the best cars especially in this era. Thats on the road and in Racing,Please go on tell me why There junk tell me what american cars compare to our cars.
@2girls1freak your basing it on 1 modern car around a track as being the bases of America being the best.
Yeah i will the ZR1s is the 7th fasted car round the nurburgring, the fasted being the radical a british car so that must mean we are the best at making cars LOL.
@TheLloydA1 it's boarderline road legal. look at the fuking thing. it's a race car that belongs in the gt series. i've never even heard of that company in my life
@2girls1freak American cars have always been fast in a straight line due to them having large engines, but crap around corners because they are too heavy. You cant really compare them.
The first 6 fastest production car lap times around the ring are by European cars.
@hipwell4342 no. the first 6 are failty. the first 2 are race cars that are boarderline road legal. the 3rd time is a custom build car, the 4th and 6th are some thing i've never heard of and the 5th is a manufacture "claim"
thus, the ZR1 is the fastest production car on the planet.
@2girls1freak A car is either road legal or it is not, there is nothing borderline about it. Cars 1-6 are European and the seventh is a 1.5 tonne American failure.
@2girls1freak The Bugatti Veryron SS is the fastest production car around the plant and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is the fastest car around the Nurburgring.
@TheLloydA1 yeah but its a production car,and what does it matter if you have never heard of it. you've losed this argument also its not just the radical theres five other cars that are faster.
As usual Clarkson totally misses the point of owning such cars in their original forms. They are about long drives on a sunny afternoon in the country, not at break-neck speeds, its all about enjoyment. If you want a rocket to blast round the roads in buy a Ferrari.
@silver760 Actually , you're the one missing the point. He's not talking about 'speed and power'.,,,the upgrades are to improve reliabilty. You can't enjoy a car if it's sitting dismantled in some garage somewhere.
@celt67 Properly maintained by a responsible owner these cars in their original form are just as reliable as any other,if not more. The direction Clarkson is coming from is aimed at the type of owner who has a car and drives it without ever looking under the bonnet. Most modern cars will withstand this type of abuse but older vehicles will not. They require regular servicing and inspection.Who these days carries out the daily/weekly/monthly checks they are supposed to?Not the average motorist.
@dno101 it's the same car. It's clear to me that this, like so many other things to do with Mr Clarkson, was staged. He wanted to show that these 2 aren't very fast so put them up against a pretty ordinary car and not for the first time shot himself in the foot. I know for a fact it was staged, can't say how I know, but it was.
@ohheyitshonor That'll ruin it. It's much more valuable in original condition. Besides, if one has 200k to spend on a car like this, I'm sure he can afford a modern sports car as well.

@benni8400 Yer last time I saw a DB5, it was £500, 000. The E type would obviously be less, its strange though I'd rather the Jag myself. Love the sound of it
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Mercedes vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and EFi injectors clean as new!
I sometime feel that Jeremy Clarkson has lost touch with reality.
YES These cars are great to fly around private test tracks. But I am going to tell you a true story here..My Brother got banned for driving his 1999 Year model 1.3 LITRE NISSAN MICRA on a motorway at 102 MPH.... In the UK you get banned from driving at 100MPH+ on a motoway if you get caught. With the sheer VOLUME of cars on the UK road's and with speed camera's on every corner..Fast cars are simply not worth having anymore!
OK When driving In the UK, Fast cars are simply not worth having anymore.
I used to have a 1995 BMW M3. Yes it was awesome to drive and fun too. But I ended up with 6 Penalty points. And I was told off by the roadside on 3 occasions by the police ..Like a naughty schoolboy.
I now drive a 1.9L TD VW Golf.. It is great on fuel and has enough power for the UK roads.
i there really good cars but i think the most historic momment was when a black hard top and red convertible Jaguar E Type where both crushed by an orange digger and the Aston Martin DB5's brother the DB4 convertible was crush and flipped over a cliffed . CAN ANY 1 GUEST WHAT FILM I'M ON ABOUT? :)
@jpp44345 Im sure brought by some Rich Person to have in their Collection. Sad thing is i bet it will never be used which is sad for such a amazing car
do these cars even have aircon, or airbags?? Modern remakes don't count and anyway they cost more than the modern day equivalents! Rubbish. At 100K pound, for God's sake just buy a new DB!
Bunch of bullshit from Clarkson, as ussual, but, alas, that is expected from him... He's not caring one bit for style, looks, and design, perfoemance numbers is obviosly all that matters to him... And who in their right mind would want to buy these cars for track times or acceleration??! lol Also, comparing their speed and acceleration to modern day car is idiotic, to say at least, since performance numbers have detoriated a lot in the last 40 years. When they were new, they had much more power
@MrKamerads NO modern car will ever compare to an E-type. The new XK is a mess of a car. Top Gear magazine described it as "completely non-functional"
Are those wire wheels @ 5:34 actually part of the wheel? i.e. do you unscrew that cap and get access to the bolts screwing the wheel to the front suspension?
And furthermore, is that engine a fuel injected version of the V12??
@beepandbop Inevitably there would be some powerloss with any set of wheels/tyres.
No major downsides, only that it would not be original to the car, which some people oppose. But uprated suspension gives much better handling, as seen in the video.
£120,000 for a DB5? Hand-built with every single panel made by a craftsman? Bargain, especially compared to a new 'Aston' that is mass produced by Ford and thus has no class. Ok if you're a footballer maybe.
It's top of my list of dream cars. Also on that list (if anyone cares) are such things as the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Alfa 33 Stradale, Lancia Stratos, Maserati Tipo 61 (birdcage), Sunbeam Tiger....I could go on but you've all got better things to do x
@bentleyv8t The latest series has been better - last week wasn't great, they were making motorhomes. But overall, there is more cars and less pissing around. What myself (and quite a lot of people) have been hoping for. Tonight James is maxing the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport - a lighter, more powerful Veyron, capable of achieving speeds close to 270 mph.
Even if that Honda has better acceleration I would still take that E-Type, just try working on a modern 4 cylinder! Atleast the E-type wouldn't need everything removed to fix.
'cont thie Consumer Guide Report indicates that the Honda with the V6 got 19-23 mpg, and the Jag only 2 mpg less. Sorry Jeremy, the reason you got smoked by the Honda is you can't drive. Even a Honda with an engine bigger than what you tested against is slower than the Jag. And I don't think the Honda has a 149mph top end either.
Learn to drive gang, make sure your cars are tuned, or shut up!
Interesting notes here as well. From Wikipedia (such as it is): The 3.8 litre Jag had the performance of: "149.1 mph (240.0 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.1 seconds. (hat tip to @G1NZOU). I looked up both 2008 and 2009 2.4 litre Honda Accord. I got 7.5 0-60 for the V-6, not the 2.4 litre 4 four 2008 model, the 2009 model has 271 horsepower. Oh, and for the record
@Azureecosse An e-type series 1 convertible weighs in at about 1250 kg. That's a similar weight to a 997 porsche gt3 (the lightweight track version). The drag race was staged, as are a lot of things on Top Gear, to help prove whatever point Clarkson is making. The same Jag then goes around the test track in the same time as a four wheel drive Audi TT v6.
Sex on wheels with that DB5 good GOD I want one so badly now.. for a classic car..but sadly all I can afford is a 928 S4 5spd. but even thats a gorgeous car to look at too.
But, ripping out the engine and replacing it with a modern one is fine to do, its the owners car to do what he wishes, but you certainly don't have a vintage ride anymore.
And anyone that has a problem with these cars overheating is an example of the car simply not being sorted properly. There are high density radiators that look stock, electric fans, and all sorts of solutions. What an idiotic statement that "these cars all overheat".
This whole segment is rather odd, and sometimes makes me wonder if these are really car guys. My base model Taurus out handles any of the 60s and 70s muscle cars. A Subaru WRX beats most of them in acceleration. A tinny Honda out accelerates, at least in the short term, an old E-type Jag. And, uh, so?
The point is, you drive these cars for what the cars WERE! I don't mind doing upgrades or even adding air conditioning, all mods that could be unbolted without ruining the car's value.
@ToyKingWonder I agree, people love these cars because they simply are stunning to look at and providing you take care of them, really nice to drive.
I'm hoping to get my Hornet Mk.III running this summer, no airbags, aircon, crumple zones, fuel injection, catalytic converters or radio but that's not the point, it's just a really good feeling to drive a 60s car.
@G1NZOU I am a car nut, but to be quite honest, I am not even sure of what a Hornet Mk. III is, is that a Wolseley? We don't have any of those here in the States, but I would love to hear about them. Feel free to contact me through youtube or I will give you my email. 2nd, I agree with what you say. I have several vintage rides, they are not like modern cars, and so what. I have a Fiat 850 Spider, I have a '69 AMX, etc, completely different, and as you said, they just feel great to drive.
Are there any American companies that can modernise classics like the original Mustang Super Snake and the Corvette Stingray? Could someone please tell me.
totaly agree, what happened. we had beatuifully flowing that had style and grace, and then we hit the mid 70's and we are all drving around in a box with another box on top for us to sit in. they are horrible, even now with some sence of curves and aerodynamics they arnt lovely to look at.
The E type is a car that you can look at for years and years and still find it beautiful each time
dont get me wrong, they are very pretty, but not the fastest, by anything.but trust me i would have one of these over a the ferrari california, 599 or 612.
British car from that era are notorious from breaking down and having crappy electrical systems. As mentioned here with modern technology and a healthy bank account you can make them more reliable.
@jammer96 comes with the badge though doesnt it but the new astons are alot better value for money very nice hand made yet completely reliable and those V12's are to live or let die for
all the aston martin's had different BHP becuase each engine was hand made!! so possibly a few of them would of had the spec that aston said it did..but forget that .cor there so dam gawjus regardelss of any engine or cornering problems .if i had £300'000 id be gettin one haha
I agree. The DB6 looked a lot like the DB5, but was a good bit more reliable and advanced, though. It would be the one to go for.
I think the British climate doesn't help them either, they'd be much happier in southern California or the French Riviera than rainy Manchester or Glasgow.
Does anyone else think that Aston Martin should start making DB5s again so that people can have a classic (with modern safety stuff)? They are fantastic looking cars and I want one!

MrKamerads 1 year ago
@MrKamerads NO modern car will ever compare to an E-type. The new XK is a mess of a car. Top Gear magazine described it as "completely non-functional"

At the end of the day NOTHING looks as gorgeous as these 2 cars!
That's what the wealthy pay for!
Modern cars have NO character...NOTHING!
60's styling was and will forever be the BEST!

Are those wire wheels @ 5:34 actually part of the wheel? i.e. do you unscrew that cap and get access to the bolts screwing the wheel to the front suspension?
And furthermore, is that engine a fuel injected version of the V12??
beepandbop 1 year ago
@beepandbop The wheels are not bolted on, the wheels are mounted onto the splines on the hub, then the wheel spinners are tightened to keep them on.
hipwell4342 1 year ago
@hipwell4342 interesting. Would the wire wheels not transfer power to the ground as effectively as new alloys?
I really like the classic look, it looks both classy and sporty. Any major downsides?
I mean, it seems the wire wheel was able to fit over the new disc brakes and house the new and improved tires as well.
beepandbop 1 year ago
@beepandbop Inevitably there would be some powerloss with any set of wheels/tyres.
No major downsides, only that it would not be original to the car, which some people oppose. But uprated suspension gives much better handling, as seen in the video.
hipwell4342 1 year ago
£120,000 for a DB5? Hand-built with every single panel made by a craftsman? Bargain, especially compared to a new 'Aston' that is mass produced by Ford and thus has no class. Ok if you're a footballer maybe.
It's top of my list of dream cars. Also on that list (if anyone cares) are such things as the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Alfa 33 Stradale, Lancia Stratos, Maserati Tipo 61 (birdcage), Sunbeam Tiger....I could go on but you've all got better things to do x

this is the kind of films top gear should be making nowadays, great music, great facts, everything is great. Not the nonsense they do now.
bentleyv8t 1 year ago
@bentleyv8t The latest series has been better - last week wasn't great, they were making motorhomes. But overall, there is more cars and less pissing around. What myself (and quite a lot of people) have been hoping for. Tonight James is maxing the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport - a lighter, more powerful Veyron, capable of achieving speeds close to 270 mph.
NobleM15fan 1 year ago
Even if that Honda has better acceleration I would still take that E-Type, just try working on a modern 4 cylinder! Atleast the E-type wouldn't need everything removed to fix.
Ryoku75 1 year ago
'cont thie Consumer Guide Report indicates that the Honda with the V6 got 19-23 mpg, and the Jag only 2 mpg less. Sorry Jeremy, the reason you got smoked by the Honda is you can't drive. Even a Honda with an engine bigger than what you tested against is slower than the Jag. And I don't think the Honda has a 149mph top end either.
Learn to drive gang, make sure your cars are tuned, or shut up!
ToyKingWonder 1 year ago
@ToyKingWonder Not to mention E types look great while modern Hondas look bland or too sporty for what they are.
Ryoku75 1 year ago
Interesting notes here as well. From Wikipedia (such as it is): The 3.8 litre Jag had the performance of: "149.1 mph (240.0 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.1 seconds. (hat tip to @G1NZOU). I looked up both 2008 and 2009 2.4 litre Honda Accord. I got 7.5 0-60 for the V-6, not the 2.4 litre 4 four 2008 model, the 2009 model has 271 horsepower. Oh, and for the record
ToyKingWonder 1 year ago
still pretty impressive performance compared to the Accord theJag and Aston probably weigh about a quarter of a ton more than the Accord.
Azureecosse 1 year ago
@Azureecosse An e-type series 1 convertible weighs in at about 1250 kg. That's a similar weight to a 997 porsche gt3 (the lightweight track version). The drag race was staged, as are a lot of things on Top Gear, to help prove whatever point Clarkson is making. The same Jag then goes around the test track in the same time as a four wheel drive Audi TT v6.

Sex on wheels with that DB5 good GOD I want one so badly now.. for a classic car..but sadly all I can afford is a 928 S4 5spd. but even thats a gorgeous car to look at too.

ToyKingWonder 1 year ago 2
con't
But, ripping out the engine and replacing it with a modern one is fine to do, its the owners car to do what he wishes, but you certainly don't have a vintage ride anymore.
And anyone that has a problem with these cars overheating is an example of the car simply not being sorted properly. There are high density radiators that look stock, electric fans, and all sorts of solutions. What an idiotic statement that "these cars all overheat".
There are vintage cars that drive cross
ToyKingWonder 1 year ago
@ToyKingWonder You still have a vintage ride but not a vintage engine or vintage ease of working on.
Ryoku75 1 year ago
This whole segment is rather odd, and sometimes makes me wonder if these are really car guys. My base model Taurus out handles any of the 60s and 70s muscle cars. A Subaru WRX beats most of them in acceleration. A tinny Honda out accelerates, at least in the short term, an old E-type Jag. And, uh, so?
The point is, you drive these cars for what the cars WERE! I don't mind doing upgrades or even adding air conditioning, all mods that could be unbolted without ruining the car's value.
ToyKingWonder 1 year ago
@ToyKingWonder I agree, people love these cars because they simply are stunning to look at and providing you take care of them, really nice to drive.
I'm hoping to get my Hornet Mk.III running this summer, no airbags, aircon, crumple zones, fuel injection, catalytic converters or radio but that's not the point, it's just a really good feeling to drive a 60s car.
G1NZOU 1 year ago
@G1NZOU I am a car nut, but to be quite honest, I am not even sure of what a Hornet Mk. III is, is that a Wolseley? We don't have any of those here in the States, but I would love to hear about them. Feel free to contact me through youtube or I will give you my email. 2nd, I agree with what you say. I have several vintage rides, they are not like modern cars, and so what. I have a Fiat 850 Spider, I have a '69 AMX, etc, completely different, and as you said, they just feel great to drive.
ToyKingWonder 1 year ago
@ToyKingWonder Awesome car collection.
Yeah, it's a Wolseley.
Same 998cc engine as the mini cooper but with a single carburettor, extra chrome trim, leather seats and a bigger boot.
I haven't got it working yet though, it's been sitting idle for 17 years.
I'll be uploading some videos as I work on it.

Are there any American companies that can modernise classics like the original Mustang Super Snake and the Corvette Stingray? Could someone please tell me.
NobleM15fan 1 year ago
@NobleM15fan There is a company that put in modern Corvette internals into an older model, but I can't remember much about it.
zomgthesoftness 1 year ago
@zomgthesoftness Thanks - the Stingray's very pretty, but since it was quite a popular model in its time it would be pretty expensive.
NobleM15fan 1 year ago
The disparity of horsepower wasn't necessarily due to lying, it was due to the fact that back in the '60's, gross hp was used, not net hp.
gross hp = special headers, and without the fuel pump, power brake pump, etc.
beepandbop 1 year ago
Classic cars with modern components = best combination ever. I wonder if you could buy a modernised Lamborghini Countach...

British car from that era are notorious from breaking down and having crappy electrical systems. As mentioned here with modern technology and a healthy bank account you can make them more reliable.

British reliability and 60's technology isn't the ideal combination, but goddamn...that Aston Martin is possibly the best looking car ever made.
mormonjoe 2 years ago 45
I agree. The DB6 looked a lot like the DB5, but was a good bit more reliable and advanced, though. It would be the one to go for.
I think the British climate doesn't help them either, they'd be much happier in southern California or the French Riviera than rainy Manchester or Glasgow.
