pink elephants are dark spirits of the dream realm/world. they start a dark parade at night and other color elephants join the parade too. they have nightmare powers to scare and prank.
Everyone is so adamant that "alcohol could never do this!" but what about absinthe? The water in the bucket turned green when the alcohol poured in after all :P When I was younger I took this simply to mean that the alcohol was gross; the shade of green made me think 'smelly'. But being older lets me come up with other ideas (which are probably wrong anyway, since my first thoughts fit the target audience).
@skrinkling I think that's what the bottle had in it, actually. Absinthe is sometimes called 'the green devil' and its high alcohol percentage can really get you seeing pink elephants in a hurry; with that in mind, that theory seems spot-on.
What I don't get is how the two of them are seeing the same thing. I thought they were drunk, but even if they're both drunk, how'd they see the exact same hallucinations?
@MegaMonkeyTrouble It's made for kids, the point is just that you're pretty fucked up when you're drunk. Maybe some parents overreacted when this came out, this shit is deep you clearly dont see that when you're drunk, this is stuff you see on mush
@MetaKnight911 I know that - I was asking just how odd both characters saw the same thing. Though as an adult I'd wonder what else was in those drinks, drugs and the sort, heh. But of course it's for kids, it is Dumbo and by Disney. - So parents over-reacted? I thought many folks liked it? Or found it funny. Or at least entertaining.
People need GROW UP & stop thinking this stuff was from (acid, shrumes and other drugs) It was only because the "animated" elephant and mouse had a bit of alcohol.
I personally love this scene & think it's funny, but hate it when people keep on making dumb comments about it when its just a film
@CassieP2753 Here's the thing, though: while the bottle the substance came from looks like alcohol, the stuff made the water in the bucket bubble. While this could be explained as 'bubbles in the drink', only champagne is bubbly, and the bottle was not a champagne bottle.
With this in mind, you can see why people would wonder if whatever that liquid was was, in fact, alcoholic. Honestly, the effects seem more like mescaline than they do a booze-induced hallucination, but that's just my opinion.
@CassieP2753 For all intents and purposes, alcohol should affect an elephant's brain in much the same way it would a human's brain; the difference in reaction, from an outside perspective, would be dictated by the differences in physiology and anatomy (e.g. more legs to trip over).
But of course, this is animation. I suppose Disney can get away with throwing science to the wind.
@Nitrinoxus Yeah, considering that this film did come out in 1964, and alot of the people enjoyed the musicals that they made from the previous years. Disney probably thought he could do the same from them having a bit to drink and have them forget about it after they woke up.
@AerisGhost Smee and Captain Hook were too funny to forget. "It's a Small World After All" was referenced very early, and that's far too catchy to be forgotten. Tron has grown in popularity, so it can't have been forgotten about; the same goes for The Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence from Fantasia, nodded to in the intro of the game.
I think somewhere, the line between 'nostalgic' and 'forgotten' got blurred. Wouldn't you agree?
It's not so scary for you as much as it makes you scared for the animators. The amount of drugs they must have taken through the whole process of this scene cannot be healthy.
i need the score >.< my band said if i could either find the score or write, we have the permission to play it on parade cuz we already hav Disney copyrights. and plus this would be amazing for the band to play^^
I find this sequence absolutely terrifying, but that's what makes me love it so much. Always has been. The whole thing is just so outrageous, brilliant, beautifully animated, visionary, imaginative, creative...just because someone calls it "scary" doesn't necessarily mean s/he doesn't love it! At 2:25, yes, the much-less-scary part begins, and it becomes a bit more winsome and lighthearted.
& it's always reminded me of the surreal "Heffalumps & Woozles" dream sequence in "Winnie the Pooh & the Blustery Day." Both are very Fantasia-like, but I'm certain that they were intended to be scary, or at least on the unsettling/eerie/creepy side--as parts of Fantasia are. The lyrics suggest this, even if you didn't find the imagery intimidating ("Chase 'em away! Chase 'em away! I'm afraid, need your aid; pink elephants on parade...") Kid's movies used to be less afraid of dark, mature stuff.
why is everyone afraid of this scene this scene was made after fantasia was completed and it ended up in this movie hey maybe everyone is afraid because it does not belong here but come on as a kid i loved this part it reminded me of fantasia the song might have been a little creepy but it is only creepy until 1:51 and starting from 2:24 to the end defiantly belongs on fantasia no doubt about that now back to the fans what is so scary about a fantasia segment nothing so what is wrong about this
@totaldrambeatles22 i totally agree. i dont think this is scary at all its funny and unique. Its probly the coolest scene in Dumbo. i dont get it either why everyone is scared
@Dumbofan1 You don't get why it's scary? Those soulless, malevolent eyes on the elephants, the "look out! look out!" in hushed, worried tones, the Expressionistically-inspired bed, the marching elephant head creature... all the heads with menacing grins...
@Dumbofan1 Its just one of those things :P I personally found this utterly creepy but I cant explain why, just like I cant explain why I find spiders creepy (especially when here in England none of them are remotely dangerous) :')
@Dumbofan1 more importantly - why are you talking about being scared of this like it's a bad thing? I was really scared of this as a kid, that's why I remember it and I loved it. I just loved being scared and freaked out by this.
@totaldrambeatles22 personally, i agree. i don't think its scary. but it have to guess the reason is because the elephants just have black holes for eyes like the scream face. especially at 2:15-2:20 it would be scarey for little kids. having the faces with the curved "evil eyes" making up a body marching forward.
And the way, scattered at times near the beginning, how the body parts meld together. like there trunk horns. also, id like to add at 1:30 (give or take a second depending on your internet speed) where there looking in the window. i know, if i was a kid and i had windows in my room, i wouldnt be able to sleep lol.
@RevolvingSanctum i think that scene is more cute then scary especially how the two elephants diss him at 2:16 and then he comes back my guess is because it is irrelevant to the movie it was actually made during the fantaisia era i do agree it kind of belongs in that movie but they apparently had no room
@totaldrambeatles22 I agree, too. I loved this scene when I was a child, it was my favourite scene in the entire movie. I never considered it as being scary. It's rather very special, unique and crazy in my opinion.
@totaldrambeatles22 I don't know what it is about this scene, but it just makes me anxious. It recently downloaded a bunch of disney cds, and when this song came through, I had to skip it! And fantasia scenes do scare me, actually. The last one with the monster no the mountain, I can't watch that all the way through still to this day.
@totaldrambeatles22 Take for instance, I was very young when I saw this; I think what got me, if anything, was that it came right the heck out of NOWHERE xD One moment, it's all bright & colorful and fun, and then BAM - hallucinogenic, ethereal pink elephants dancing in the dark to very odd music. I remember not being sure if I should be amused or scared. Vivid imagination standing though - my dreams won out T___T
Being older now, I find it pretty cool; I appreciate it more for what it is :)
@totaldrambeatles22 I don't know I personally never found Fantasia scary but this did creep me out - saw both of them probably starting around age 2 or 3 so it's not that I was older when I saw one or the other. But come on you can't tell me that part where the anthropomorphic thing made out of elephant heads walking towards you @ 2:13 isn't terrifying!! Ha.
@totaldrambeatles22 Everything from 2:53 definitely belongs on what might be the strangest Fantasia segment in history. The only really creepy part is from 2:12 to 2:22

@Nitrinoxus True. But it was only "alcohol" & all animals would react differently than humans would if they had that much to drink. (just saying)
CassieP2753 2 months ago
@CassieP2753 For all intents and purposes, alcohol should affect an elephant's brain in much the same way it would a human's brain; the difference in reaction, from an outside perspective, would be dictated by the differences in physiology and anatomy (e.g. more legs to trip over).
But of course, this is animation. I suppose Disney can get away with throwing science to the wind.

You would think Disney would try and make some merchandise out of this. I could see pink elephant stuff like shirts or buttons at like hot topic.
