I met Nathan on Monday 29th Nov (it's Weds 1st Dec now) at St Michael Cornhill in London in a lunchtime recital (1:00 GMT/UTC), having woken that morning in Toulouse, got trains up through France, the Channel Tunnel, into London, braved the Underground (despite industrial action), got to St M's, where he'd never been before, got to grips with the organ immediately, playing this, Franck's A Minor Choral and the Reubke Sonata with total confidence and artistry. He's phenomenal. So modest too.
Nathan is such a great organist, he is soooooo much better than Carpenter, who is, in my opinion, all flash and no substance. Nathan has so much flash (well, maybe less than CC, but Laube wears appropriate concert attire). And, at the OHS convention In Cleveland, he played squirrelball with the "back of the bus," passes my "good guy" test.
@Fozzymaple - flash is bad IMO. Nathan doesn't have an ounce of flash in his body - just real artistry. Cameron Carpenter, on the other hand, does have flash, but not an ounce of artistry. He's just an attention whore.
Mr. Laube's musical talent truly is outstanding. He has so much expressive mastery of the phrasing, which on pipe organ is no mean feat. I hope to see hi in concert sometime soon.
a brilliant virtuoso of the highest mark; expressive virtuosity; subtle master of the musical phrase. Booked him for two recitals in February in Flint, MI; booked him again for 2010! Great artist and delightful human being!
I was there, and enjoyed every second of it! It was fantastic! It's also a wonderful instrument! I was lost of words afterwards! I simply can not give enough praise! It was that good.
I know what you mean. I heard him play Durufle a couple of months ago and I listened with tears in my eyes because I could not believe how such a young man was able to interpret the music in such a creative and compelling way.
I never get tired of this.
